ED and the Oculus Rift Developers Kit 2 (DK2) Discussion Thread

I have it on my monitor, with my hotas and no issues at all... sometimes when you lean in too far it does the stop.

It works great

I also have it on my monitor somewhere between 45 and 60 cm from my face.
When I set full speed my body shifts forward. That's really a strange experience.

I always scootch back in my seat as far as I can go while really stretching and still being able to press f12 (OR reset).
Press f12
Move yourself forward 1 foot so you're back to normal position.
Text is easier to read as you're now closer, not much more but definitely an improvement. You also don't see your body coming through.
Side panels are now directly left and right of you and not 10 and 2 oclock.

So yellow to green, how long does it usually take?

Really depends on where you live. Mine says it should be here in 6 days (Canada) Some people in States/UK are only 1 to 2 days on average.

Shipping anything to Canada (From US) is a real pain. I have to ship materials for work constantly and things just get 'stuck' at the boarder ALL the time. It can take 3 weeks for certain goods... it's a 4 hour drive :S

Mine (UK) was 2-3 days from getting the email I think. It is shipped next day delivery so once you get shipping notification it will be there the next day!

Walk Around Cockpit (well. the chair)

Try this:

Find the right (or left) most position that your DK2 camera tracks.

Move as far forward as you can and keep your head on the edge boundary you have chosen.

duck down a little and then reset your view to that position.

Then back right off from your desk and stand up. You can now freely move around an appreciable space around the side of your chair that you have selected.

this works really well in the larger ships like Type-6, Type-9 and Anaconda. You get a much better feeling for the size of your ship when you can get up and effectively move around it within the range of your DK2 tether.

It's a bit odd in the small ships... have a try for yourself and see what you can do in those small cockpits :)

I recommend holding your DK2 tether in hand so you don't pull it tight and cause damage. Also remove and trip hazards prior to doing this. Keep your chair close so you have something to grab if you lose balance. Don't freak out when you see the headless body in the chair.

I checked the order page and saw that mine had changed to Processing on Thursday morning.
I received my shipping email at 5pm on the Friday and received the DK2 on Monday around 10am.

Had it not been for the weekend I would have received it the day after the shipping email.

UK here.

ED and DK2 IPDAmount configuration for IPD

Got it working stoping the service, took me only 2 minutes to install the game and start playing it on my DK2, but I'm wondering about the values for the IPD and FOV as they are not displayed on numbers on the internal game configuration screen I found them on C:\Users\[Username]\AppData\Local\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics\DisplaySettings.xml

on the xml file are:

<IPDAmount>0.003000</IPDAmount>
<FOV>56.249001</FOV>

I would like to confirm which values correspond this to? I guess the FOV depends on the A or B lenses used and its distance and IPD should be <IPDAmount>0.006500</IPDAmount> for the default 65mm but need to confirm this ... anyone could enlighten me?

Yay!

Just played the Titans of Space DK2 version just released - the text is so easy to read and its making me think there can be lots of improvements made to E D in relation to readable text.

Thje thing with Titans of Space is it's dedicated to VR whereas ED is driving the line between what works for monitor players (lots of information in a small space) and VR (sparse, critical only information with additional size).

If ED was VR only then things would look very different I expect.

The problem is the orange color, the pentile array of the red subpixels is horrible on the Samsung screen (they are very small and shiny compared to the other base colors), as all the holographic menus are in orange they are very difficult to read, adding a configuration setting to put them in blue or green would really enhance their readability, think on the blue message to jump out on super cruise "SAFE TO DISENGAGE" it's really easy to read...

yeah I agree. the HUD colors dont work well on pentiles. I'm hoping they allow for at least a green and blue variant of the current HUD.

Arrived. So the dilemma is to carry on packing for holiday departure or try and get it set up.

Edit:
Finally able to re-test at my friends, using Bilagos app and everything worked perfectly. The weird skewing was gone, rotational and positional head-tracking was fine. I would imagine updating to 0.4.1 of the sdk and stopping the relevant services would have the same effect. Looks like my initial test failed as I didn't realise you had to stop the config.exe too.

Original Post:
Yesterday I was able to visit a friend who had a DK2 and was excited to install Elite Dangerous and test it out. Unfortunately whilst he'd set up the DK2 and got some existing demo's running on it, we were unable to get Elite working correctly.

We were able to see Elite using the DK2, but testing the first combat mission, rotating (roll) the view would cause the asteroid field to roll in a skewed manor. That is if you imagine you were looking at an asteroid in the center of the screen as you rolled the ship the asteroid would stretch and shrink. It was quite an unpleasent experience.

On top of that there was no rotational or positional tracking at all. So if i rotate my head the view remained static of the cockpit, basically as though i was just moving a monitor around. I looked at the control options but found nothing related to using the Rift or to assign it to head look.

We went through several of the guides i'd found online for setting up Elite with the rift, killing some background processes etc, but just couldn't get rid of the weird skewing effect. In addition the view of the game seemed very zoomed in, where i could barely see the sensor scanner at the bottom.

Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? I did a search and found one other person with a similar skewed image issue on the Oculus forums, but no-one had answered them.

As far as i'm aware my friend had the latest firmware, latest sdk installed (4.0), they had set up the extended desktop system and rotated the secondary monitor to portrait. Indeed it seemed as though the dk2 was working in terms of sending Elite to the screen, just this damn weird skew effect on roll made it unusable and i'm unsure why rotational tracking wasn't working.

Did you follow the instructions provided on the 2nd post of this thread?

The key to tracking is that the background processes related to the camera must be disabled as ED currently uses an outdated SDK. The tool linked in the post provides for that.

For proper display, once you start the game you must go into the graphic options and set up ED to use the screen representing the Rift (1920*1050 and 75Hz), and then set the 3D options to use the rift (with either speakers or headphones).

Thanks for your quick reply.

Yep, everything but explicitly '7. Install Bilagos app and execute'. Instead I just killed the two process that have often been mentioned and I think are killed by that app? I'll search for the app now though and see if it does anything else.

I didn't do the first few steps, since my friend had already been through all those and had got the rift set up and working already with the desk demo, a couple of other demos and a go karting game.

Unfortunately as he has it all set up for his game he doesn't really want to redo the first few steps for fear of losing his working set up. Can't really blame him for that, he only got the dk2 specifically to work with high end driving simulations.

Sadly for me this has made testing Elite a very disappointing experience on the Rift. I found the image to be really blurry at the edges, the chromatic aberration extreme and the diamond arrangement of the pixels distracting. Now the first two of those might just be how the Rift is and in normal operation you simply don't notice as instead of moving your eyes to the edges you simply move you head instead. As for the screendoor i'm in two minds as to whether its too noticable or not. I'm hoping once you can actually play and are focused on other things it would become less noticable.

The most frustrating part of all this is the skewing that happens as you roll your craft. I can't see that anything mentioned about setting up the rift would be responsible for this, but its so obvious wrong that something is definitely broken somewhere.

Edit:
Hmm reading the release notes on the app it also mentions stopping the OculusConfigUtil.exe, that is something I didn't try.

I've also found another mentioned of skewing of the images for a different game/demo on the Oculus forum, but again no direct replies to it ;(

As per your edit. There are 3 processes that the tool will stop. All 3 *must* be disabled for tracking to occur.

While there are some chromatic (and colour) bleeding, they are fairly minor and playable. The distortion/skewing that you describe is usually caused by ED not being set in OR mode in the 3D graphic options in the game.
