ED Astrometrics: Maps and Visualizations

That would be super cool, and is similar to what I was thinking of doing with a javascript / browser-side journal scanner (basically just build one journal with only those events).

Doesn't help with EDD, but for anyone using EDJP it already has ability to combine Journals and only include selected events (originally to make batch uploads to EGO easier).

I am obviously doing something wrong here ...

I have tried with IE and Chrome - same result.

Those are the wrong files. Currently, only Journal files can be processed. Get them from here: %USERPROFILE%\Saved Games\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous

Aaah - thank you :)
I have never accessed those files before - about to upload ...

edit
All done - what a great application - thank you.
I am only disappointed that much of my early exploring is lost (trip to BP and lots of other stuff [knocked out]) as I did not keep those files when I updated my system SSDs in 2016 grrr

OK, the uploader can now accept a ZIP archive containing the journals. You can still upload them directly, but optionally you can zip them up first. It won't care what the name of the zip file is, as long as it ends in ".zip".

And generated with an initial dev build of a filtered journal export from EDDiscovery, all my travels going back to when I started using EDD in the dark days of config file settings and trilateration ;)

This is so cool. Watching it brings back the memories of what I was doing, in a very cool way. Thanks! :)

Hey Orvidius, any chance of us being able to customise the scale of the zoomed in panel on the right? For those of us that spend most of our time "scribbling" over the middle 2% of the bubble it'd be nice to have the option to generate a video that focuses in on the core area of our travels a bit more.

How's the server holding up? Should we publicise this a bit more or are you happy with the amount of hits you're getting?

You read my mind. I'm testing some customization settings now, for video speed and zoom scale. :)

Server is doing great so far. I may shorten the expiration times if the usage rate goes up, but that shouldn't really impact anyone since they usually download shortly after the video is ready.

Actually I think I'll shorten the expiration now, to about 24 hours. I don't think it's too much to expect people to download same-day. :D So it should be good to go. Right now people are hitting it about 6-10 times a day, so it can definitely take more, and the uploader will tell people to go away if the queue has 10 entries.

Okay, not as impressive as most people's, but as I've said before elsewhere I only get to play on PC during lunch hours at work (and even then not every day obviously)...

I don't remember why my route breaks and returns to The Bubble half-way through. It's possible my ship was destroyed and I had to start my personal FRift expedition again...

This is great, although I am not interested in where I have been but where I am going, so thanks to this I can head for the black bits!

Agreed! Orvidius' maps are the best thing we have for knowing where to go boldly where no-one has gone before!

(Just steer clear of that Delta quadrant...)

Good news! We can now test out the custom settings. I've added drop-down selections for video speed and zoom scale. I've increased the default speed from 2 to 3, so videos will be about 50% faster by default, but you can set it anywhere from 1-10. This is a linear scaling of how many pixel changing jumps will be shown per frame. The zoom scale supports 4 different window sizes. The previous scale was 10 kly, but now you can use sizes of 1, 2, 5, and 10, with the default now set to 2 kly.

Woo hoo! Nice work - will test when I get home.

Here's my updated travel history with some of the new settings:

Finally had some time to figure out what I did wrong on the age distribution graph. It's worth noting that the universe is less than 14 billion years old, so it's unsurprising that the magenta line is absent. :) Check it out:

I'm also thinking of giving the video maker a better name (website / domain name), rather than the longer URL it has now. Exploring a few ideas now. If I end up remapping the URLs and renaming it, I'll put in redirects from the old URLs.

New travel video now uploaded. What I really like about this closer zoomed version is that occasionally you'll see me going around and around the same route many times (e.g. at 0:28 and 0:45) ... this is me doing Buckyball Races! :D

Hey Alec, a couple striking similarities in our travel histories eh! :D

Sadly only now I noticed I didn't save that folder after moving to Win 10, so all my first year of wanderings, including the jaunts to Colonia and Sag A+, are lost in time like tears in rain. :(

Thank you immensely and great work cmdr Orvidius, that's beyond-awesome stuff!

I'm considering things like Elite-Astrometrics, Elite-Mapping, EDTM (ED Travel Maps).. Nothing is jumping out at me yet. The latter isn't as appealing in the sense that I can house both the maps, and the video maker there, so it should be a little less specific. EDIT: Another idea is just "Elite-Explorer".

For some reason I am unable to upload the vid I made. Tried on youtube and twitch, but both pages keep "processing" the file forever. I will try making it again.

Edit: Nice, it worked this time.
