ED free on the XBox for the gamers of PC ?

It's not entirely Frontier's decision, Microsoft as the publishers of the Xbox One version will obviously want their cut for any activation on their platform and you can't expect Frontier to pick up the tab on that for their current (close to) 550,000 commanders.

A discount on Frontier's end similar to what Bethesda did for preexisting customers with Elder Scrolls Online could certainly be a possibility.

Alternatively Microsoft may go for a similar deal to that of Steam whereby in return for being freely activated they get a cut from all of all your future DLC and other micro transactions. This option would definitely conflict with Steam if you've already activated your key with them though.

If you are already playing on the PC, why would you want to play on the XBone? Sure some will and some kind of discount scheme could be used but I seriously doubt that there will be endless queues forming. Also what about a possible future PlayStation release, will people be asking for this free as well.

And thinking about this a little more, since the player base is separated (ok, they use the same background simulation, but cannot directly play together), wouldn't this be like giving a free second commander slot, at which point I would be expecting the same for those who only want to play the PC version (we have been asking for this since before release).

Microsoft declared : "The games purchased on XBOX will be free on PC. Frontier will allow the reverse ?

If this is true it rings alarm bells in my head. As it confirms that the xbox users will play in the same universe as us!! (After all, it would be pointless giving the PC version away if they didn't)

Actually David Braben recently stated (Official Xbox Magazine - May 2015) that although they've not made a decision as yet there's no technological barrier to it and cross-platform play may just need to be disabled at such times as when patches are out of sync.

Interviewer: Will the story restart for the Xbox version? And will there be cross-platform play?

David Braben: No it won't. And we haven't said if there will be cross-platform play, but we know that there won't at some times. We don't want any one platform to be held back, but one platform might lead another in individual features, because that way we don't have to roll out updates across all platforms on the same day, which just has technical risks, so we'd stop cross-play at that time. So technically we can do - practically it's not certain one way or the other. It's the same galaxy, the same world and the same story you can contribute to. If you're contributing to building a space station in a particular mining area, you're still doing that and getting the benefit from it.

There actually is a reason for it. If you want to PVP and encounter less cheating, console version is going to much better in that regard. Most of your sunday cheaters are not capable to jacking up their console and risk getting their hardware banned from Xbox network. They will stick with PC.

On the other hand, if they connect the playerbases with PC then both platforms have to deal with the same amount of "tweakers". :)

Bring them on! Xbox users are at a severe disadvantage when it comes to us with HOTAS :p

Yes, this is true ---- "We are also bringing the Xbox gaming experience to Windows 10, giving games and gamers access to the Xbox Live gaming community, enabling the capture and share of gameplay and giving Xbox One owners the ability to play their Xbox One games from any Windows 10 PC in their home."

It's extremely unlikely. It's easy to give out a free pc copy, it's harder to give outa free xbox copy. Microsoft probably made a deal with FD to encourage people to use their new os. It's unlikely FD will make one to give out free xbox copies.

I believe that particular quote relates to streaming Xbox One games to any PC connected to the same network and is not related to games being free on both platforms.

For example maybe your Xbox is running in the living room but you stream/play it on your Laptop in your bedroom.

Yes, this is true

That's highly misleading .

There's a difference between cross-buy and cross-play. Only two games have been announced as cross-buy. Pinball FX2 (Zen Studios), Gigantic (Motiga), neither of which are AAA titles. I doubt many big publishers will be giving out free copies of their games, Microsoft included.

As for cross-play:

“Certainly I like the idea of cross-play,” Braben told us. But liking it doesn’t mean it will be coming to Elite: Dangerous soon, because there’s one big problem looming over cross-play.

“I think the challenges for us, which sort of fights against it, is we’ve also said that we’ll continue to do updates across all platforms, and what we didn’t want was PC updates to be held up for whatever reason, like if there’s a delay on another platform.”

Hem ... To be continued in a few months. With Microsoft, keep the eyes open and do not fall asleep

Well , sins the PC is the definitive edition why would anyone pay for a downgrade?

What a pointless comment. Yeah good idea, lets start yet another "console vs PC" argument. Nice flamebait, it worked.

Basically mate i own an alienware laptop, an alienware desktop and an xbox one. When it comes to online games, i would play them all on my xbox in a heartbeat given the choice. No hackers, almost no bugs, no compatibility issues, no hassle.

Also the PC is not a definitive edition unless you have the over the top PC specs to make it so, and it simply doesn't. Further to that, the xbox easily has the specs required to run it, so there is actually no difference. We aren't talking star citizen here. Its ED.

The xbox o/s will shortly upgrade to windows 10 and use dx12 so will almost certainly be capable of multi platform interoperability. Why anyone needs to be alarmed by this I cannot fathom.

Same universe, yes. Same instance, I doubt it.

Think of it as two separate private groups, and the only way to cross form one to the other is to play on a PC or XBone.

Or, at least, that is my theory...

Corrections welcome.

Nope. I play with an xbox controller already and its just as good as any joystick. Also xbox will undoubtedly have full voice control via the connect so they will have no detriment to not having a keyboard.

Having gone from a HOTAS on my gaming rig, to an Xbox controller on my travel laptop, I can tell you, you are at an epic disadvantage. it's just impossible to bind all the needed buttons to an xbox controller in a way that makes it as fast and instinctive as a HOTAS.
