ED: Tips and tricks for new players

Yeah I'll do that. Eventually I want to fully kit out a semi large exploration vessel and head to Jacques station then off to Sagittarius A. I've seen guys make around 200,000,000 of just selling exploration data from that sector granted that's almost a 22,000LY trip..... I'm not ready for that.

Make liberal use of the training missions to practice combat in a stable & risk-free environment. Due to the predictable nature of the opponents & their outfitting, you can be confident that doing better or worse is a result of your own flying, something which can be more difficult to gauge in the main game's somewhat random encounters, especially when first learning the game (was I better at combat that time, or just facing a weaker opponent?).

For the inexperienced explorer I'd recommend the smallest shield you can fit (especially if you are doing planetary landings) and a docking computer. Nothing worse than getting back to the bubble and dieing coz you forgot how to dock or coz you get interdicted and shot to hell.

Its not about the distance if ye know what to look for and yer in the right part of the universe to find them, but 200m will take more time than ye know if its all scan data. Takes a certain kind of mentality to stick at it fer so long, but its certainly possible. Stick with smaller ships which are better suited to learning the ropes like the DBE which is one the best exploration ships in the small ship class. Bloody useful ship fer a great many things actually because it runs so cold and has a very good range.

All sterling advice above. Learnt a few things, thanks all. I might be a bit late adding this, but WTH.

Personally, I think the most important thing other than don't fly without a rebuy, is quite simply enjoy yourself in the simulation/game*

It will all come together eventually & quicker than you think. Instead of grind, grind & more grind.

Be patient too, you won't be triple elite & zipping around in a corvette or cutter within a few weeks.

Just, enjoy, it, for, what, it, is. Never take it too seriously :)

& welcome, as a relative newcomer here myself. I've found it to be a good resource for picking up the finer points of a complex simulation/game*

(* - I'm still undecided what to refer to it as.)

Hutton orbital is a long way away

Don't rush

Don't bother with exploits - they spoil all fun

Don't watch everything on youtube - you'll see it at some point then wish you hadn't already seen it before

Don't bother with exploits - Viper mkIII's are as fun to fly as 'Condas

Make friends with the locals - those factions at the stations give you more money the more you work for them

Read the local news - get into the background story

Exploration is not just long range - checkout everything in your system

have fun, it's a great game

there is no yellow snow in the game, but just in case you find any, don't eat it

Don't hesitate to say hello or "o7" to others cmdrs.

Few of them are monsters and there are some kind monsters among monsters as well.

Agree with Alec... the forum is not representative of the game population. "Do what you like to do" but always respect others is my best advice.

Welcome in our space jungle cmdr.

Fly safe o7

I've spent a fair amount of time in deep space. Took my Corvette out earlier this year on a 4 month trip. I've been to Sag A four times, once was in my Corvette.

A little tip from me that I am surprised a lot of players still aren't aware of, is to turn off your flight assist before you begin jumping. Doing this will place you at zero throttle after you've entered a new system.

I tend to usually only do this if I am jumping through regions of space that are more heavily populated with neutron stars and black holes, and the like. It could potentially save you some trouble.

Good luck and hope you enjoy the game.

Reset the controller settings to this:

B+LB= heat sink
B+RB= shield cell
B+LT= chaff
A+Up= target previous sub system
A+Down=target next enemy ship
A+Right= target next system in route

fighter commands:
X+B = aggressive
A+Y = return to dock
Rb+Lb = attack target

Driving:
LB+RB dismiss/recall ship

Headlock:
look toward all panels: do nothing

In the galaxy map you can apply all kinds of filters to your route plotting. My favorite? Select Star Type and choose the ones you can fuel scoop from.

But, Phisto you handsome devil, how do I know what stars I can scoop?

Simple, young squire! Use the acronym "KGB FOAM." Those letters are the types of stars you can fuel scoop from. Make sure they are selected in the list and then click "Apply to Route" at the bottom. Happy travels!

I always preferred Oh Be A Fine Girl Kiss Me (O,B,A,F,G,K,M) partly because early on I found this easier to remember, but I also liked it better because it happens to list the main sequence stars in descending order of temperature.

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but role-playing can work wonders, too. Gives context to your actions, some limitations to your playstyle, and longterm goals to achieve without rushing. You don't have to put a ton of effort into it, either, as even a broad RP can make an impact.

Yup - it's education as well as a useful mnemonic for a game. ; -)

But comrades, have you heard the benefits of KGB FOAM? It cleans dirty capitalists like no other product on the market! But wait, there's more!
