EDO system specs revealed: discussion

My PS3 is still in the box, now I just need to wait 20 more years and it will be worth something.
Irony is that PS3 is better than PS4 and PS5 at some things (like home theater). Sony, in its infinite wisdom, drops good features with each new console..

I still have my PS3 as well, stored away in some closet collecting eons of dust.

Plus the ship interiors and EVA of Space Engineers. :)

Are people still running rigs from 2013?
I'm a cheapo in that regard and even I changed my rig once and the GFX twice in that time
You prompted me to look up when my pc was made, and embarrassingly, its 10yrs old !

At least the graphics card is 2016 so er- yeah 5yrs old - it was the bestest small form factor card at the time..🙄

Having said that it always ran Horizons gracefully at max settings, but then its a spaceship game - nothing happens fast enough to need more than 30fps.

Do you realize, that Frontier can NOT raise the minimum requirements, because nobody can buy any GPUs...

Some people's GPU's even got downgraded, like mine - someone offered over 500 Euros for my old GTX EVGA 1080 FTW, so I only have a GTX 1660TI left to play on.
Um ok... Cool story bro.

I bet it looks like it's covered in elephant butt leather now 😜

Looking at the requirements and then at my puny GTX 950 I now think it's a good thing that there isn't much in Odyssee that interests me. ;)

I originally planned to upgrade my GPU to something like a 1660 Super early this year, but with the current market I can totally forget that

Looks like I am at the minimum for cpu

Don't Panic

I would first note that FDev might be deliberately cautious with this specs, to help deal with the rage of people who try to run Odyssey on potatoes. Since everybody is already raging about the increased system specs, the complaints about bad performance on potatoes might not get too much traction, since that’s expected.

That said, unless there is a lot of optimisation wizardry before the console release (end of PC beta - hi S.! - 😀), there might be difficulties with potato Horizons users running side-by-side with Odyssey players on surfaces. (Space doesn’t appear to be an issue.)

The way to deal with this might require cutting content - less things to render, so that potatoes can keep up. Since this would cut down the experience for people with modern rigs, it might be that the simplest solution is to “split” Horizons into two parts: legacy horizons that runs on old min specs, and modern Horizons that has specs that matches that of Odyssey. Odyssey could be split the same way.

For a solo player, the difference is that the legacy content is less complex, so that they get acceptable performance. There will be less NPC’s, etc., but the gameplay should feel similar.

But for multiplayer, “legacy” players could only instance with other “legacy” players, as they all have to see the same less complex content. In other words, a permanent split in the PC player base.

I hope you are right. I was getting chuggy perfomrance, but so were alot of players with beefier rigs than what I've been running.

I go back to id Software as the standard-bearer on introducing new games... they were playable on older machines, but featured cutting edge graphics for the newest cards.

I hope Frontier has the same approach, for everyone's sake, because this is the worst upgrade environment in the history of the PC gaming market, without exaggeration.

I find it mind-boggling that SE's planetary terrains look almost as good as Odyssey's, but you can go anywhere and start digging into the ground, creating caves, extracting minerals, and building a base. It's literally a huge sandbox, combined with Lego.

The downside of their approach is that because everything consists of voxels, there are no scientifically correct stellar mechanics. On the other hand, nothing in ED matches the feel of a space walk in SE.

If only SE was an MMO... 🤩

But, the real questions are:
How big is that ship, is it a small canopy, or a Lakon style greenhouse?
Is it realistic to have such a large amount of 'glass', I mean, shouldn't...

Oh, wait, wrong thread... ;)
Unlike some other games, I can take you for a walk inside! Though I really need to make a video to do it justice.

Well, my system is:

Windows 10 64 bit
Intel Core I5 4590 quadcore at 3.3Ghz
Radeon R9 380
16 Gb RAM
Several TB of HDD space (I don't currently own an SSD).

So, it looks like I just barely scrape in on the minimum specs both CPU and GPU-wise. Based on Alpha, do you think it'll be playable on my rig though?

So FDev lied. Nice going...

They have upped the specs significantly at a time when upgrading your PC is impossible/unaffordable. That's about as sucky as you can get. I was looking forward to tomorrow. Now? Not so much...:cautious:

For references these are the specs they said weren't going to change.

  • EXPECTED PERFORMANCE

Our minimum requirements aim to produce a minimum of 30 frames-per-second at 720p (1280x720).

Our recommended requirements aim to produce an average of 60 frames-per-second at 1080p (1920x1080). This may fluctuate in more intensive areas and on planets (Horizons-only)

Well looks like the gifted copy I got is going in the trash bin. Just hope I can force steam to refund it.
you should probably could get a refund... the very late system requirements (or the lack of them at the time of purchase) should help.
Steam got them like today.

I sent a message to my friend so they could attempt to get a refund. I hope they do cause this screams false advertising.
