EDProfiler - A New Display Switcher/Robust Settings Profiler/Switcher/Detector!

Can any of you fine Commanders help me get this working properly please?
I have my 2d and 3d profiles set as I would like them to work: 3d display windowed, 2d fullscreen - and would like the audio to follow suit.
Problem I get is that when I select 2d and launch, the Rift boots up and it reverts to windowed and audio is through the HMD.
Fantastic though VR is, there ain't much to drink in from a starport menu, and I'd rather get a drink in!
Would be perfect if the game would react to taking off the HMD and revert to old stylee. Yeah, maybe I'm just a "can't understand new technology" type.
(will be impressed if the sweary filter picks up on that)

OK, the thing with the Rift (and Oculus Home) booting up when you run ED, irrespective of whether you're using a profile with 3D set to Oculus or not can be prevented by stopping the Oculus runtime service (called OVRService).

The easiest way to do this is to create two desktop shortcuts labelled "Stop Oculus" and "Start Oculus". When you create these shortcuts enter the following commands into their respective shortcut boxes (confusingly labelled "location of the item" in Windows 10) ..

net stop OVRService

net start OVRService

Once you've created the shortcuts, right-click each one, pick Properties, click the "Advanced" button and tick the "Run as administrator" button.

Having done that, prior to starting ED with a 2D profile, run your "Stop Oculus" shortcut and when you want to start ED for VR, run your "Start Oculus" shortcut.

Note: I'm not sure that Oculus Home starting up should actually prevent you from running 2D Elite so this may not be your actual problem.

As for the audio issue, you need to manually change the default audio playback device prior to starting Elite. In Windows 10 this is really easy, just click the speaker icon in your Windows system tray, click on the top where it shows the current audio device and pick the one you want. If you're pre-Windows 10 you need to right-click the speaker icon, pick Playback devices, select the appropriate device and click the 'Set default' button.

Note: it's possible to use a DOS batch command to pick the appropriate audio source by downloading and installing a neat little tool called nircmd.

http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/nircmd.html

For my "Start/Stop Oculus shortcuts" I actually have two batch files which execute both the appropriate 'net start/stop' command above and also the 'nircmd setdefaultsounddevice' to pick the appropriate audio device.

Sorry, this is all getting a bit technical, feel free to pm me if you need more help.

Uninstall, go to %localappdata%\apps and rename the folder 2.0 to something else. Also clear any files from temp. Install again from Internet Explorer (not chrome or ff etc). If still not working email me: kaii@dr.com

Thanks doc, will try and let you know. I know I did install it from Chrome for one thing.

Firstly, Amazing - and thanks so much for the efforts so far.

A query on the GUI colours, it seems to update the xxxxxxxOverride.xml file in my C:\xxxx\app data etc path .. time and date updates and the contents of the file reflect the settings I chose for Gui colours,

However - the game either in VR (RIFT) or 2d - Triple Screen isnt using those colours.

I am I doing something wrong?

EDIT. Ok so I have found I can manually update the GraphixOptions.XML file in both the \Products\elite-dangerous-64 and \Products\FORC-FDEV-D-1010 game folders to get it working.... but it I am sure I am doing something wrong .. as occasionally when I edit those files.. and start the game again via launcher... it doesnt update the colours (yet keeps the previous one I edited).

I have even tried using Notepad++ vs notepad due to XML support - but doesnt seem to make much difference.

Happy to continue testing with any community suggestions?

PS. I am a steam installer, but also run the launcher manually - and EDProfiler does seem to correctly detect my other settings such as control bindings etc.

Settings were good, did the shortcuts and while it doesn't actually seem to stop Oculus Home from booting, it now behaving itself and launching fullscreen.
Bizarre, but whatever it works, so thanks! Now I can do the in-station stuff while giving my face a rest and having a beer and a tab.
Talking of which, I'll get you a pint later! [up]

Is there a reason that supersampling 0.5 isn't an option?
Being able to switch between that and 1.0 is why I downloaded this.

The thing for me about Elite is that it - annoyingly - has a very inconsistent demand on the graphics card. I'd love to be able to have a program like this to detect the FPS (averaged over - say - 5 seconds) and then wind the detail levels back if they dropped too far, or wind them back up when the pace went up again. That way I could have the beautiful view in space, without the relatively poor performance in stations and on planets.

Of course it wouldn't help with the sudden high demand (like a near-collision), but it would help with things like landings or furball fights where frame rate sags at settings that are just peachy in normal space.

I remember back in the day some games did experiment with this - usually with a dynamic draw distance that varied according to the FPS. It was never very convincing at the time as virtually every game had that "blue fog" effect in the distance to hide the crappy drawing distance. Often I found that the scenery was effect by this, but characters were not. leading to cars seeming to "float" out of the fog at you!

I seem to be having problems, every time i start the profiler i get this error:

ed error 1.PNG

Many thanks for the hard work you have put into this project Dr. Kali.

I just gave the program a try and am loving it so far. Any advice on the best VR settings. I have a 980ti but no matter what settings I choose my CPU and GPU never seem to go over 50% use. I choose VR high and have stuck with it but wonder can I push it higher.

Hello, I've been having trouble installing this tool as it doesn't seem to be creating the install directories (have tried various ways of starting including with admin privileges). Whenever I try I receive a .NET Framework error along the lines of "Could not find a part of the path: 'C:\Users\Omitted\Documents\EDProfiler\Defaults\Paths.xml'"

Thanks for your time creating this tool for everyone.

Either I never noticed it when I updated that feature with 2.2, or it was sneakily added as an option in 2.2.03. I've added it now, just update EDP

Email me the error, as well as your entire %localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Graphics folder: kaii@dr.com

Try cranking up HMD Image Quality to 1.25x for VR, and Super Sampling to 1.5x in 2D

I have been releasing a steady stream of stealth updates over the last week, we are now up to 2.2.2.2. My main goal is to eliminate all unhandled exceptions and replace them with a useful message with instructions about what to do. If you spot any, please email me: kaii@dr.com.

I've also included a single-show update log whenever you update the app so I can speak to my userbase as one.

Always open for donations and suggestions!

I was having isses and got the EDProfiler to work today. The only reason I can think of is that I completely uninstalled my GPU drivers and reinstalled them. It sounds illogical that that might have something to do with it. I donno.

Anyway, where does the EDProfiler look for bindings? My drop down list is empty, and I cant seem to find bindigns in the /documents/EDprofiler/ folder.

Well they are not connected in any way afaik. Anyway, bindings are found in %localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings

Strange, since my %localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings is populated but the EDProfiler bindings list is not. The EDprofiler is looking at that spesific folder "%localappdata%\Frontier Developments\Elite Dangerous\Options\Bindings"?

Restarting the EDProfiler worked. It may not have refreshed after I pointed it to the right folder for ED.exe. Thanks
