Does anyone know why the old x56 Saitek or Thrustmaster are named as such in the keybinds and Virpil not?

Within game files there is a device mapping file which converts the IDs into the names
The file is DeviceMappings.xml with in the "Elite Dangerous\Products\elite-dangerous-odyssey-64\ControlSchemes" folder.

It's likely that you could add to this to the have names for other devices, however it might get reverted back on an update.
looking at the existing files there was some work done to add the Virpil throttle and panel, no idea when that was added or if its anything they are looking into any further.

I asked Virpil Support if there is deeper meaning behind their PID or if it's just random hexadecimal.

Will be interesting to see what they come back with.
My feeling is changes based on the options picked within software, if the number of buttons the device is presenting to the OS changes then would make sense it would be seen under a different ID and the IDs aren't random but based off the available options.

If we're able to set the PID without negative consequences then we tell people on edrefcard.info what to use. And then all Virpil items will have a predefined set of PID (or for the binds an combined VIP+PID).
Those PIDs cannot change once you have set your bindings in Elite without having to "repair" them in the bindings file. This is why instead of changing all my bindings I just changed my PID on the sticks to match what they should have been since I made my bindings. It was a quicker process to change the devices PID than to find replace all the instances and hope that I didn't make a mistake.

What really should happen in my personal opinion, Virpil should bake them in the controllers via an update to the firmware. They should determine all the combinations of their devices and then bake a database into the devices and have it report "warbird-d base with constellation alpha prime stick" or "r1-falcon rudder pedals" or "vmax prime throttle".
 
Ok, I've got response from Virpil support: If You would like to change PID, in Your decribed situation it does not matter, which numbers You would like to change.
To me that seems, we can figure out our own suggestions for PID of each individual virpil product to identify them in Elite and on edrefcard.info.

Apparently Virpil devices have different PIDs depending on if they are configured as left, right or unspecified handedness... I was having trouble with some things with handedness specified, and when I got rid of that, the PIDs changed.

According to Virpil, they do that so that the system/games can tell the difference between multiple instances of the same controller.

It also screwed up my bindings file, but that's just XML, so I used Notepad++ to search and replace the old device ids with the new ids. Far easier than rebinding in ED.

K, now the problem is, those of us who already have PIDs that we want to use because it doesn't break our binds are going to lose the ability to use the site if you force virpil gear to be read as only if the PID matches. I don't mind doing the work to standardize, but you are going to have to work in some logic for a way to tell Virpil users that they should set their devices to the community chosen PIDs.

Then you are going to need to educate those that have no idea how to setup Virpils on how to do that process. And if their binds are already set, now you are going to have to teach them how to fix them.

Now, like I said, I don't mind, I know what I am doing and my commitment to playing the game means occasionally I do all sorts of stuff outside the game in relation to making my play experience better.

I am actually personally working on a tool to visualize my controllers output in game in VR. I also want to make that tool create a system that will allow users to do this:

And I was thinking that the tool would allow you to edit your binds outside of the game and back them up and write all this back to where it needs to be.

But that's going to take some time.
 
It would not be an issue save the codebase is a bit clunky and what should be a one line change becomes a bit of a copy and paste mission.

More annoying than anything.

My long overdue rewrite fixes that, so adding device ids will be easy.

Your idea is close to one about vjoy support... Where you can tell edrefcard what device that id represents.

I'll just attach it. I admit I don't know enough about the key binding to answer your question.
Unsure if there was one uploaded before. I was starting out with the default and then was going to update my keybindings myself as I figured things out.

I've just discovered this nice site and tried it but to my surprise, the "old" Winwing Orion2 base with ViperAce(EX) stick and ViperAce EX Shaker Kit addition isn't supported yet. The reference code for this combo is "pxhvcg",

Edit: Aslo two bugs seeming to be active, for sure my left yaw is bound to left pedal and vice versa, but the tool reads out left pedal for right yaw and vice versa. Seconf, the analogue stick on the right throttle grip is bound, but the tools reads out nothing binded.

I've just discovered this nice site and tried it but to my surprise, the "old" Winwing Orion2 base with ViperAce(EX) stick and ViperAce EX Shaker Kit addition isn't supported yet. The reference code for this combo is "pxhvcg",

Edit: Aslo two bugs seeming to be active, for sure my left yaw is bound to left pedal and vice versa, but the tool reads out left pedal for right yaw and vice versa. Seconf, the analogue stick on the right throttle grip is bound, but the tools reads out nothing binded.

Ref your peddles, I think EDrefcard is correct. Looking at your binds file you have the Yaw set back to front with a "negative" direction!
