Elite (1984) file extension issue.

I have the same problem with the game crashing when trying to hyperspace to another system. Locks up and says 'not found'. I did launch from Lave station, stopped and turned around just in time to find another ship about to run me down! Some things never change. ;)

Yes, it may seem very old by today's standards, but Elite was an awesome and unique game in it's day. Back then this game was brilliant, and still is compared to a lot of modern titles. I have a version of this for my C64 emulator but I could never get it to work right. My FE2 for the Amiga emulator works great, and I played it a lot last year while waiting for ED's alpha to start. I would love to have a playable version of the original Elite.

Perhaps FD needs to open a dedicated forum for this. I can just imagine the posts that would pop up already...

I've been flying around Lave and I haven't seen any other players yet!
Which stations have a black market?
Why are there not any guilds?
Where can I buy gimbal weapons?
How do I pay off my fines?
When will the EVA expansion for this be released?

Am I missing something here? The original Elite has been freely available for decades with options for it to be emulated from every platform it was ever delivered upon.

It's a great gift but I don't know if I will play it. I have such fond memories of the original I think I might have been spoiled by the next generation and don't want to spoil them.

Before Elite, if you wanted to captain a starship, it looked like this:

Star_Trek_text_game.png

See that -E- ? That's your ship. You maneuvered around with text commands in a turn based fashion looking for +K+ which were the enemy ships. Then a calculator computed the damage done by your attacks. That was as good as it got.

OMG I played that game!!! It was awesome, and hard. But admittedly most of the game experience was in the mind of the kid playing it. The screen was just the interface of data to interpret... not a dumbed down display of the game.

wow I just got whooshed back 30 years to 1982. I remember having to hunt Romulans on that grid, sending out torpedoes along pathways, praying for a Hit.

Back then it was Brain Candy, not Eye Candy.

Ditto

Played Star Trek on the university computer system way back in 1974. Data was entered and you picked up your programmed punch cards to save your data.
Definitely don't want to go back to those days. The ships were ascii symbols. Even pre Elite.
Compared to that, elite was truly a marvel!

This was the first game that I played on a computer. Was on a University computer lab. Loved it. The BBC B Emulator is pretty awesome in my opinion. I never had the opportunity to own one, so it gives us something of the essence of this beauty. I did own the TI-99, Atari 400/800 and the wonderful Commodore 64. Plus 1 Reputation Commander! :)

Do you mind if I gold plate and frame this ....

"envision and enable engagement"

The project was cancelled after 3 weeks - $3 million well spent.

Believe me .. you have my sympathy! And it's "exactly why Culloden happened" (quote; Billy Connolly)

Am I missing something here? The original Elite has been freely available for decades with options for it to be emulated from every platform it was ever delivered upon.

Don't think you missed anything .. I even have it .. then grabbed it from the Zaonce (web 2.0?) shop anyway!
(Unlimited downloads remain :D)

Because why ....

Brain Candy, not Eye Candy.

++1 to whoever came up with Star Trek in thread.

It's amazing to look back on that old perspective, really. With nothing to compare again, Elite was just difficult! Though I bet the "envisioned disabled" won't find it quite so tough; "roll left" and "roll right" are no longer brand new concepts to the human race!! Sure, we could probably all "imagine" a cockpit but to actually get into one? .. holy cow! It's great to see this happening with ED today, Beta2 anyone?

... "Elite", 30 Years at the Frontier, and "blowing minds for 3+ decades

And long may it continue! Even got a wireframe Cobra job, despite not having played and no prospect of doing so!! (I'm a backer though .. yay for me )

I wasn't a player of the original Elite, but for interest sake,I downloaded the BBCElite and installed it. Fired it up, and OMG. Salutations to anyone that enjoys and can successfully play that game.
Apparently, hindsight is 20/20 and nostalgia is blind.
Many of the players of the original game think that it's the greatest thing sliced bread, and wax nostalgically over the enjoyment and time they spent in front of their monochrome or rgb monitors.
I hope that the light of the new day sheds light upon their memories. It was obviously great for its day, but I would have no desire to go back to my early years to play it.
I really enjoy history and antiques, but not antique games. I suppose however, many young people that play Elite Dangerous today will wax nostalgically for it in 30years time,in spite of the wonders of gaming in the future.

Dang kids of today just do not realise how advanced this was for its day.;)
Anyway what is this monochrome nonsense. There was black/white/yellow/green/red:smilie:

"Toddles off muttering about bloody thing crashing as I went safely through letterbox, pushing walking frame carefully in front of each step forward, making for the kitchen and a welcome cup of tea."

Getting Elite 1984 to run

One minor issue with the free Elite I found, I needed to rename the ELITEBBC.SDD file to be ELITEBBC.SSD, then the game worked fine from the Emulator.

BBC Computer 32K

Acorn DFS

BASIC

Ahhh, memories.......... mostly about why that Acorn User program I just spent the morning typing in won't run, and checking each line 1 at a time....

Now to find copies of Exile and all the Repton games.....:D

I shall be reviewing the BBC version head 2 head against the ZX Spectrum version. Stay tuned.

Merged a bunch of threads on the same issue - sorry for repeat posts above.

It would be grand if people would have a quick check before starting a new thread.

Thanks.

Well it's obvious then that computer games did not play such a big part of your life as they did in mine......

I found text adventures a battle of the mind............

I loved text adventures - a time when you had to use your imagination, not like now - everything handed on a plate these days!

I loved the acornsoft adventures - The kingdom of Hamil & Gateway to Karos - to name a few!

{ELItE 1984} Download wont work, This is how you fix it..

Unfortunately, the big promotion that Frontier is making by attempting to release the BBC Micro free version of the Elite 1984 game fell flat on its face today..

All you have to do is try and follow their simple instructions to open the emulator.. choose the menu command : Run Disc.. and the browser opens to get you to the place where you unzipped the files..

The browser shows you that it is looking for specific types of file(s) with three digit extensions.. just take a look at the bottom right corner..

So because people on teamspeak were trying and failing to get this old game working, they asked me to take a look at what is wrong..

Unfortunately.. a "Single Sided Disk" file type is abbreviated SSD.

Someone responsible for quality assurance and packaging a release product should have a look at the mistake in their file name which makes the file an abbreviation of SDD... so you have to rename the file to SSD at the end of the file where the file type is designated..

See screenshots below.
Feel free to call Frontier support for any other issues.

That's great and all but can you do it without the sniping, please? It serves no purpose.

Also, it's possible that most people won't be able to see file extensions so this is a valid method:

  1. Click 'File' - 'Run Disc' and navigate to the folder where the ELITEBBC.SDD file is located
  2. Type in *.* to display all files or select 'Single Sided Disc (*.*)' from the dropdown on the right.
  3. Then just double click the ELITEBBC.SDD file and voila, the game loads.

Yes agreed, there was also a thread started on this yesterday

A failure that happens within the first few steps of loading a game?

I could see if it was a bug not easily found until you were in the depths of your 10th trading run..

It's a shame. Nothing more, nothing less.. why don't you see lack of quality assurance for what it is? Maybe you're not in a business.. this kind of mistake would go on somebody's record unless it wasn't pointed out..

Do you want your company's next big advertisement to fail causing trickle down effects? Don't answer that, we all have different levels to what we see as "doing a GOOD job".

Any company employee could have taken one pass through the self-check-list for releasing something and "tested' it before allowing it to go public where it can become embarrassing.

The other method is to use google or youtube to learn how to turn on your "view all file type extensions".. BUT now we are getting beyond a simple bug report and into tutorials..

This was more likely a QA screw-up.. not necessarily pointing at the devs..
