Great thread!
I am currently at around 90000 points and 80000 credits in galaxy 1.
Guess my memory must have been wrong about the Constrictor mission being available in galaxy one from what I have read here.
I get what people are saying about it getting boring. That is why I play permadeath. It just turns into a grind otherwise.
I will keep following this thread and let you guys know if anything interesting crops up in my game.

I never got into Oolite first time around, with Amiga Elite being my favourite, but all of a sudden Oolite has just "clicked", and I'm loving it!

Same here Slopey - I've tried Oolite on and off for the last 5 years, and it never really caught my attention. This time around, I've decided to give it a serious go, and I can feel it dragging me in.

Meh... I've stumbled across Oolite, too, but I didn't get the hang of it...
First time I played, I didn't meet enemy resistance while approaching -- Zaonce, I think -- but then I botched the landing...

I immediately tried again and was blasted into oblivion by a single attacking Moray Star Boat...

Somehow, that killed my interest... Is Oolite really worth a go? Any tactical advise from fellow Amiga pilots? :)

One tactic is to avoid the normal space lanes, meaning that you don't fly directly towards the planet when you arrive, align the planet on the bottom or top of the compass and engage the jump drive for a few seconds (maybe 5-10 is enough), then align yourself towards the planet and it should be a safer journey :)

Some more details on the first mission:

The destruction of the Constrictor is rewarded with 400Cr bounty and 5,000 points.
If you pick up the cargo canister(s) it drops, you'll find Computers in it (I _THINK_ that it solely depends on the ship what you'll find in the cargo canisters, but I'll have to examine further).

It takes 111 hits with a beam laser to destroy the Constrictor (if I didn't lose count) or 93 hits with a military laser (again, if I didn't lose count).
Remember, it takes 56 hits with a beam laser to destroy a Thargoid (or 46 with a military laser), so you'll need about twice as many hits for the Constrictor.

Any unanswered questions about the first mission? :) I think, I am done here. On to mission two :). [I'll try to trigger the super nova mission in galaxy 3 --- and I will keep a close eye on byte A3 while doing so ;)]

And on to mission two:

During mission one, I made an intergalactic hyperjump to galaxy 3. When I hyper jumped in galaxy 3 afterwards, byte A3 remained fixed at 40. However, upon completion of the first mission, the byte decreased in value again (after each hyperjump -- without having to perform another intergalactic hyperjump).

So I hyperjumped between two systems relatively close to one another on the left hand side of the galaxy (forgot their names). I repeated this often and thus decreased the value of byte A3 to 0. Upon docking at the station then, I was asked to deliver Thargoid documents to the secret base at -- Quceri (108.0 Ly away!). Thus, it might be a good idea to make the last jump before getting the mission as close to the center of the galaxy as possible, thereby reducing the distance you have to go.

And what a ride was in for me!! THREE Thargoids on my tail _on_ _every_ _fracking_ _jump_. Retro rockets are a must have here! In addition to these three attackers, sometimes Thargoids _also_ attacked in pairs or another single attacker approached.
I picked a route with tech level 10 planets, so that I could refit my retro rockets on each jump -- and boy did I lose credits here... Fortunately, I used to be quite rich before accepting this mission :).
Three times, I was caught in witch-space with _FOUR_ simultaneously attacking Thargoids. I have to say that I never even attempted to successfully complete it. I just let them shoot me, reload and try again. (Even if I'd have escaped witch-space with the help of retro rockets, I'd still be caught flying towards the station).

And what's the reward for this? The "Naval Energy Unit", which refills energy at "twice the normal rate". Great to have -- but hardly worth the ~160.000 Cr I paid for the retro rockets :(.

You can also cheat yourself to the Naval Energy Unit: Set byte 31 to 02.
Further increments of byte 31 are to no avail. The status page then just lists the extra energy unit, so stick to 02. -- But who wants to cheat anyway? ;)

No points (in addition to the bounty) or Credits were awarded for the completion of mission 2.

Somehow, that killed my interest... Is Oolite really worth a go? Any tactical advise from fellow Amiga pilots? :)

Yes - it really is. First up - go download a load of OXPs for visual and gameplay goodness -they really do help the experience.

Second, when jumping into a system, IMMEADIATELY pitch/roll so the planet is at the bottom (or any of the extremities) of the radar. Then Torus for about 15 seconds. That'll get you out of the general space lane - reducing the chance of an encounter.

Now you can head back towards the planet - all being well, you'll likely be able to see the station from where you are and you should be able to Torus to pretty close to it.

Play with a joystick with twist, and docking becomes trivial. (and once you get docking computers Shift-C for fast dock but that adds 20 minutes).

And so far I'm pretty happy with it. Passenger flights are a great way to get out and see the galaxy and pick up trades en-route :)

Other tips would be get an ECM as soon as you can - missiles from agressors can be deadly, but your missiles have a habit of circling rather than hitting directly. All Asps have ECM as you'd expect so don't waste missiles on furballs with them. Also upgrade the beam laser asap, and start shooting quite early (not quite as early as in Amiga Elite though).

Ok, Slopey, I WILL give it another go.
But first, I am on a mission..... I need to get that Elite rating in Amiga Elite, first.

Another interesting bit of information:

Planets that are 0.0 Ly distant (for example "Lezaer" and "Esmaonbe" in Galaxy 3) are _actually_ 0.0 Ly distant -- and not 0.1, as stated before.
That means that you can hyperspace _indefinetely_ between the two of them without ever spending fuel... Good to reduce the "so-many-hyperjumps-to-do-before-reaching-the-next-mission"-count ;)

Good hunting!

Haha ---- No you can't!! :)

A certain programmer (hello Rob! :)) was cleverer than me: No you cannot hyperjump between two planets of distance 0.0 indefinetely...
At some point (maybe 20 jumps or so -- I'll try again to find out), the message

"fuel leak"

appears and -- nothing can be done, anymore: Your fuel is drained and you are left to stare at the monitor and reset the Amiga. *Damn* :)

Funny easter egg!! :)

Hmmm... I might have grossly misinterpreted the fuel leak.

According to this: http://www.atari-forum.com/viewtopic.php?f=4&t=5985, fuel leak just indicates the start of the third mission...
However, I was under the impression that the game had frozen and I wasn't able to do anything.
I shall investigate. For now, take my comment of the fuel leak "Easter Egg" with a great deal of sceptisism :)

Kind of feels like real research here :)

Ok, I figured it out. Here's the full story:

The message "Fuel Leak" appears at the start of mission 3. The screen turns red and you cannot do anything for a moment. The game seems to be frozen. But it continues normally, a few seconds later ---- UNLESS your last hyperjump was 0.0 Ly. It seems that this case causes a bug and the game really freezes (I waited for over a minute, but nothing happens). So, if you are hopping between two systems that are 0.0 Ly distant, be sure not to accidentally start mission 3, or you'll have to reboot.

So, this time, I made the last jump, before the mission was triggered, to a system some 5 Ly distant. The message "Fuel Leak" appeared and vanished. I approached the station and docked. (With 0.0 Ly fuel). I was told that the system's sun is going supernova and some stragglers need to be taken away immediately. Sure. Why not. I'll do it. Ok, equip with fuel --- errr... I couldn't get any fuel from the station... Hmmm... Ok, so I'll either fuel scoop the sun or intergal hyperjump out of here. When I launched, the warning "Supernova" appeared and some 20 seconds later, I was destroyed by the supernova...
(Note, this kills both options: You can't fuel scoop the sun and you can't use an intergalactic hyperjump to get out of there, because it takes 30 seconds).

Now, normally, I'd have been doomed, because I usually use one save game and save upon docking. For some reason (mainly, because I wanted to try different jumps to see if the mission trigger was any different), I used a different save game now. If I hadn't, I would have had to cheat myself out of the system (by giving me 7.0Ly worth of fuel).

The non-cheating way to approach this mission is to _first_ scoop up the fuel from the sun, _before_ docking at the station... Since I had the savegame, I could try again and do it this way. It worked :).

As a reward, 1 kg of gem stones were given to me (worth about 20,000Cr).

Oh: When's the mission triggered? Once again, after 64 hyperjumps after completing mission 2. I am _still_ in galaxy 3.

Sorry to bump this old(ish) thread, but just to complete my findings regarding the missions:

Indeed, there are the five missions mentioned in my first post.

Mission 4 is the destruction of the Cougar, which, again, is triggered after 64 more hyperjumps. The message says that a ship with "awesome capabilities" is in this sector and all traders should be careful. On the next hyperjump, three ships will attack: Two Asp Mk IIs and one ship that is intermittently visible on the radar -- the Cougar. My tactic was to first destroy the Asps and then use Retro Rockets (once again) to fire on the Cougar. I think the Cougar has less energy than the Constrictor, but since you cannot hit her while she is cloaked, it is still relatively challenging to destroy it (but with retro rockets, it's fairly easy). There is a bounty of 500Cr for destroying the ship as well as a bonus of 1000 points on your score.
But most importantly: Upon destruction, the Cougar drops a Cargo Canister (Note: On my first attempt, I seem to have either destroyed this canister or it didn't release it -- I reloaded and tried again; so it might be a good idea to save before attempting to destroy the Cougar). You can (and should!) collect this canister even if your cargo hold is full, because it contains the Cloaking Device (activated by y (z on a qwertz-keyboard)), which provides a really valuable asset: While cloaked, you lose energy, but enemy ships will not fire on you (while you can shoot at them).

The final mission is the destruction of a nearby Thargoid base (yes, again triggered after 64 hyperjumps). On the next jump, you'll find that the station you are approaching declared as "Alien Space Station" and it can -- easily -- be destroyed. Note: I selected a "Corporate State" system for my next jump and thus did not meet _any_ resistance during my approach. I destroyed the station (which is unbelievably easy! It took just a couple of shots) and afterwards destroyed a couple of Thargoids (because I waited, before I jumped). Be sure to have some fuel left for another hyperjump, or you'll have to refill at the sun...
There is no bounty for destroying the station, but you'll get 1000 points for the destruction. Also, upon landing on the next station, you'll receive an ECM Jammer (activated by L -- I think ;)). Useful?! I don't really think so... Ok, in a tight spot, you might be able to shoot some missiles at Thargoids -- but why? You can also cloak yourself, which should be more effective.

And that's it. No more missions in Elite on the Amiga.... All mysteries revealed :). I hope I didn't leave any questions open. But if I did: Feel free to ask :).

Regarding the remaining open questions from my post: I didn't find any answers so far :(. But I'll keep looking. By now, I am at ~320.000 points (still Dangerous of course) and all that remains to be done is shooting in Anarchy worlds. It will take some time to become Elite, but by now, it's easy!! I'm hardly ever hit by now, because I can cloak and unless I get two waves in short succession of Thargoids and Wolfs, my lasers recharge fast enough to not worry... Boring? Yeah, kind of....

I'm also chasing elite status on the amiga version so I'd also like to say thanks for this thread :)
The info on how to trigger missions has been a godsend.. I just finished mission 2 and only just reached 'dangerous'.. long way to go.
Stardust you must be getting close to elite by now yes?

Having said that I'd like to add a pretty big tip for mission 2..
I had a very frustrating time with this. More often than not there would be at least 3/4 thargons appear at a time and often 3/4 more would appear whilst I'm still working the first group. Personally I didn't find retro rockets much help (and very expensive!.)

When I was about half way through the 82 light year trip I found nice trick that made everything a thousand times easier.
Use the escape capsule. For some reason you retain the thargoid documents.. I guess Jameson stashes them in his pants lol.. smart man ;)
This means you only need to stick with systems of tech level 6 or higher, press 'Q' straight after a jump, buy another capsule and repeat all the way to home base :D

Cool info, Who! A little late for me, but a great hint for my next attempt :) -- and for anybody else's :).

By the way: Are you playing Elite 1.0 or 2.0 on the Amiga? I wonder if the trick also works in 2.0 -- I'll try that...

Elite?! No, not by a long shot: I am still dangerous and will remain dangerous until some 600K points...

That's some shooting to do :)

Also, Who, I used the retro rockets during mission 2 as an equivalent to the torus jump (j): I pointed the ship at the sun and fired retro rockets until I arrived at the station. Usually, this burned up one "set" of retro rockets at 8K Credits... So, your solution is cheaper :)

Yeh I'd often fall short of the planet using that method and end up with a ton of thargoids to contend with. Also I only had just under 90k and knew that wouldn't last long.. I only found out the capsule trick using it out of sheer frustration ;)
Yep using Elite 2.0 (whdload) here.
