It is not fake at all. Just take a look at the galaxy map and you may get some idea why you are seeing no one in open mode or any other mode for that matter. The Galaxy is just so damn huge even though there are few thousand online at most times it is rare you come across them. Put 5000 people on individual dinghies in the pacific or Atlantic oceans in different places and you could all sail around for months and never see another boat.
Now multiply that distance by a billion times or more and the number of people by 100 x and even though there would be many thousands playing you would in all likelihood hardly if ever see anyone unless you arranged to meet them in game.
I started playing in solo mode at the beginning of November for about three weeks. And yes, the reason was I didn't want to get fragged by competent real players. Then I started reading more on the forums and realised that I was probably worrying too much. So, just after the middle of November I changed to Open mode. Been playing that ever since. I have seen ONE real player. Now, admittedly at the moment I am off exploring in uninhabited territory so I don't expect to meet people. But even when I was in populated space, its always NPCs that I scan.
I'm waiting for solo and online to be separated, seeing 1 to 2 people every three hours is bad! I'm still waiting on my first interdiction from a real player,or to see another person running the same trade route, but I think most people other than pirates are on solo mode to lower risk involved.
The problem here is this fake multiplayer mode. There just is no freaking way that I am alone in Sol system right now!!! Where are the other players? Seriously, I am in SOL for days now in open mode and I can't remember seeing anyone else. This just can't be right.
I have to assume that this so-called "open mode" is just a cheap fake to let ppl think that this game actually is capable of multiplayer...
Maybe you've been a bad boy and they are already implementing the hellbans

or have such a poor connection that the matchmaking server refuses to connect them to other players to avoid inflicting horrendous lag and rubber banding on them.
nope to both ^^
that's bullcrap... There has to be some new players or whatever who are still hanging around within a 200 Ly radius of their starting area... There is no way that I did not see anyone in days while being in the same highly frequented area the whole time
Weird transaction behavior a few mins ago. I would have sworn I bought a cargo full of Land Enrichment Systems, only to discover I had none when I docked at my target. Then when buying from target I bought some cargo (100x tea), showed up, bought 1 of something else (coffee), then all my other cargo disappeared, then bought 1 of animal meat, showed all my cargo back, then bought 1 of some other produce, and all my other cargo disappeared. Cycling ED to see if that 'fixes' it.
Yeah, something is wrong. I just put in a ticket because I bought a B4 FSD and the credits were removed from my balance and then I was disconnected. When I came back the credits were gone but I never received the upgraded FSD. Just over 400K gone like that. Hope they can figure it out.
Same problems, made trade run, sold cargo. Filled up with new cargo after several failed tries, made return journey, found my old cargo back in a filling the hold. New cargo gone, money looks to be down (not a massive loss as I'm only in a hauler). Friends online experiencing the same thing so I've left it for tonight.
