Elite Dangerous and Windows 10 Discussion thread.

That's a bad idea, 10 is a hell of a lot better than 8 seeing as it's really just 8 fixed.

That is all well and good, but I've already underestimated Microsoft's ability to eff things up before.

IF Windows 10 has all but awesomely good reviews from the start, I won't wait 6 month. But somehow I doubt it.
I guess we'll see :)

There is nothing wrong with my Windows OS (7). There is no reason to upgrade... all an upgrade will do is disrupt my environment.

If I have to eventually pay for an upgrade due to end of life support, I will have saved a packet by not having my time wasted by an unnecessary upgrade now.

All it seems to be is a new DRM model, forced updates, no opt out, moving to a subscription model... it's a downgrade. Avoid it as long as you can.... don't be a sheep.

I wasn't going to be as blunt but I pretty much agree with this. Even the business software I use is pushing it's users into a 'cloud' based subscription model. I am pretty unhappy about it to be honest.

A Win 10 sticky is a good idea though :)

Win 7 has built in life support.

Type SFC /SCANNOW into any terminal window and boom, it's fixed.

New windows versions are always badly bugged, I'd wait at least six months (preferably a year) before starting to read reviews with a view to upgrading. Take it seriously once the unthinking fashion victims have tested it for you.

Until a DX12 only game comes out that you want to play .. then you will buggered ..

Whenever a new version of Windows appears the same thing happens .. There is always a percentage of people who say they can't see any reason to upgrade. Whilst it is right to be sceptical of any company, I don;t think there is currently enough evidence to suggest Windows is going subscription.

Even if it does, it wont be a massive amount of money, even Microsoft are not that stupid. Worst case is you might have to pay maybe £50 a year or something silly like that to keep it up to date (and thats a big maybe). Which in all honesty I would be perfectly fine with myself.

Whilst Windows 7 / 8 are fine OS's at some point you will have to upgrade ... its unavoidable

People who have Windows 8.1 and don't know about right clicking their shortcuts going to Properties > Compatibility > and checking the box "Disable display scaling on high DPI settings" are really missing out. In all seriousness Windows 8.1 is kinda unstable and I really don't like it. I feel like it isn't designed well for powerful hardware at all.

I would never describe Windows 8 as a "fine" operating system based on the legacy of Windows products it has followed. It's certainly missing some customization options in the setup installer starting with a simple check box to allow installation of a desktop version with normal DPI and some of the original defaults. Instead they force a horrid nightmare of an OS for a small touchscreen device down the gullet of typical PC/laptop users sending everyone screaming to the PC Repair man. I guess they assumed no one with a desktop would buy a mobile device OS... no that's not right who am I kidding they knew exactly what they were doing and did it anyway. Poor management and testing decisions.

I am very happy to hear some of you guys are able to and have been testing Elite on Windows 10 and getting reasonable results, thanks "explorers" lol.

Windows 10

Will there be any problem with ED and windows 10 when comes out?
I'm win7 at this time, Microsoft is offering a free upgrade to win10 until July 29
???????????????????????????

(eyeroll)
Of course there will be problems with the first version of the first version of everything with everything for the first 2 months. Then it will be fine.

I've heard there will be absolutely no problems at all with windows 10, however after the first patch upgrade, all other windows versions will not be compatible with ED. .......until the next patch upgrade, which will render all versions including 10 un-playable.

I ran the PP Beta on Win10 Technical Preview, it never had any issues IIRC. Win10 seems pretty stable so far and is heaps better than 8.x

<nods> I was about to comment on that, as I intend to wait 'til then to upgrade.

- - - Updated - - -

If I actually do upgrade, that is - it may be that Windows 7 Pro will remained installed instead.

I also have a lot of concerns over Win10, the only reason I looked at it was DX12 but I am going to hold off till I know more. Either its free to get you locked into their marketplace or subscription based models, or there is other more sinister things as FalconFly eluded to. I don't know but I am cautious by nature.

I don't believe ED will support DX12 for a long time at any rate, so no reason to step up from Win7 for me.

Incorrect, Elite: Dangerous is fine with Windows 10 as of a few months ago and continues to be so now :). Since then Microsoft's change-logs have shown hundreds of bugs fixed, which has made lots of other stuff work (pretty rock solid at the moment, and the newest build, which I've not yet tried is the RTM build that OEMs will be using). The only major changes, under the hood, for Windows 10 relate to the updated graphics driver model but nVidia have been on the ball and I presume so have AMD (but not owning any AMD cards at the moment, I haven't been paying them much attention).
