Ah, I see what you mean, what you buy WITH arx.You miss the point - I am referring to Arx purchases - i.e. things you buy with Arx - not the purchase of Arx packs.
Then I am 100% with you, that's poorly managed.

As per my comment, two above yours, you can actually see any paintjob on any ship in full lighting condition and at any angle.
Maybe it's just me, but it seems like there is a lot more going on everywhere than just "lighting".

Same ship, same place.
Trust me you wouldn'tI would be very happy to work in Cambridge and leave the Aussie summer behind
Yeah there's definitely been some changes 'under the hood'
I'd like to post a few images - but first I want to say I'm not trying to be a <censored word> to the devs, as they have my utmost respect, and Elite is the best game I've ever played. Secondly, I imagine it would be extremely hard to be a dev in Elite where everyone has wildly different and vocal opinions, and it's impossible to please everyone
I'd like to address a few of the points that CMDRs continually raise. I hope these will go towards inspiring positive changes in the future
The first issue is that the hangers are too dark to adequately assess paintjobs before purchase.
It's definitely possible to enhance the lighting in the hangers, as illustrated by the following two images. It was just a quick shader edit that took about 20mins, plus I had 3 pints of Guinness for additional challenge

The second issue concerns the changes to the Midnight Black paintjob, which has always been my favourite. @CMDR X posted comparison images that highlight the progression from Horizons 3.8 to Ody
I don't believe it's just a matter of upgraded lighting that's causing the different 'black levels', as a quick edit of the paintjob shader shows it's possible to achieve the same H3.8 midnight black in Ody

These mods aren't available, and I don't even use them myself. But if Fdev would like to employ me as a paintjob designer I would be very happy to work in Cambridge and leave the Aussie summer behind...
o7
I'd guess using 3DMigoto to detect the shaders involved and modifying ... whatever a shader doI'd still be very interested in what you did with the 'quick edit' to restore the black... Even a vague pointer...
Even if they were, they don't fix the underlying problem, which is what everyone else sees when they see your ship. Granted, I'm sure plenty of folks get paint jobs for their selfie shots, but I think a lot of us paint our ships so other people can see them. These mods aren't available, and I don't even use them myself.

His point is valid: if an user with a bit of knowledge can fix something in 20 minutes by "injecting" some change in the rendering process, how much would it require to the devs to fix it from the source, if they were willing to do it?
But one can do this ingame only in some (mostoften) poorly lighted hangars and one can't even move the camera around the ship.
Yup, you're right but as I said some postings before, that's not really "ingame" to me. Referring to paintjobs "ingame" to me means from the Livery section in the station menu and there one usually gets poor lighted hangars, bad viewing angles and no camera view at all... And that is the view one will see moreoften than leaving the game back to the menu...Rotation, zooming, turning off the lights, it's all possible...
Technically, you're not wrong, but generally one is in livery mode when docked at a station, and that is some form of downtime, so being in the main menu or in game does not make much of a difference (with a few exceptions, like in multiplayer sessions).Yup, you're right but as I said some postings before, that's not really "ingame" to me. Ymmv though
Back in the mid 1980s, before the F-117A was publicly revealed, there was much speculation around the existence of the (ever more likely fictional) F-19 Stealth Fighter, to the point where several plastic kit and toy companies released models of it much to the consternation of US politicians. I still have one on my shelf.
The Python, with various incarnations of body kit and black paints, has to me always been the ED ship that most resembles it especially with the canards and dorsal intakes/radiators.
Yours might be the closest yet.
