Elite Dangerous' Game Design is stuck behind a rock and a hard place

Impatience is a fault of today's expectations with everything and it taints processes that in the past were the normal. Think of the pre-cellphone pre-internet days when you had to look things up in books, go to the library, or simply not know the answer until you could take the time to research it or ask the right person. Think of the time before movie streaming and DVD. You had to go to the video tape rental store and search for your movie (many times that movie was rented out!) not to mention queuing the movie in that tape, and rewinding it afterwards. These are just some examples of what we used to do, what we used to wait for, what was our "normal" (If you're old like me) - and I'm not even going to go into when there were no airplanes and people had to travel by ship, or... horse and carriage! (I'm not that old!) So, we are in the 21st century and we expect everything immediately at the press of a smartphone button and when it isn't fast we think it is boring and broken. But for me, I treat those "waits" in travel as what they are in game ... incredibly fast transport between systems - immerse yourself into the game why don't you? Remind yourself that your "smartphone expectations" are SLOW and mundane to what your in-game character is achieving. If you were actually in that Sidewinder traveling between stars, you'd eat lunch, listen to some music, perhaps joke with friends (teamspeak). Don't succumb to 2014 impatience.

LOL, When I was a lad, we had to take the bus, walk 10 km, though the woods fighting bears to rent a video...So I agree with you.

A lot of text in an unnecessarily large typeface
For crying out loud, this isn't an excuse to complain about modern society's patience or lack thereof. We're talking about supercruise being clunky and unsatisfying game mechanic; thinking of things to do during long SCs isn't really the point.

That's some large text there mate. I agree with you though. Today's players are impatient and want it all yesterday. I would also hazard a guess that some bored EVE players have come over and are trying to turn the game into something akin to that. Which will ultimately fail I am sure.

Star systems are huge, and getting from one end to the other should take a while but in most cases we are talking mere minutes. Sure there are some that are much larger but only a few of these have been discovered so far and threads raised point that out. Is a two or three minute trip in SC really worth this much discussion?

Oh, if only we had bears to fight when i was young....

hell ... he did it to rent a *video*?! I had to do the same thing, through snow storms, just to rent some old people person to tell us stories. Of course she knew only one story so it got a bit repetitive after a while ... Also .. wwe didn't have bears. We only had gophers.

(btw. I do agree with Jaffa Cakes but I generally use longer words instead of bigger fonts to get my point across)

The biggest shame about this community is that... it recognizes the problem, but feels the need to defend the flaws anyway - as if it should be part and parcel of the experience.

I played about 8 hours yesterday... and I do have a triple monitor setup; and I was indeed using my other monitors to browse the web and watch videos. But the travel in this case is maximally annoying - requiring just enough attention to make it difficult to do other things, but repetitive to the point that it's very boring.

I'm sorry, but that's not how a game should be experienced.

I'll be honest. I only read about half of that wall of text but I did see a lot of complaining about the travel but what I didn't see were suggestions to make it better. I am an original Elite player, didn't play the next two as much but I did make it to Deadly in the original. So, if you played the original you know you would jump to a system and then travel, sometimes for 10+ minutes to get to the station. I actually don't see a problem with the current setup and in reality, just like any other multiplayer game out there are travel times to get to a destination it's just you actually have control of your travel(while in SC) and things can happen.

A very simple suggestion:

Enable Hyperspace Jumps over distances of 2000Ls within system.

This will remove bordem of the long haul 15 miniute cruises to far flung stations.
And you could explain away the science of having a minimum jump distance for Hyperspace Jumps.
Could easily put some safety features in to stop it being abused.

Loving the game and am a happy fanboy but the OP does have some valid observations. Keep the Faith.

Not a bad idea.

Fully agree with OP. Game is tedious and boring after a week or so playing.
I'm sorry to hear that. Perhaps when the next expansion or two are released you will change your mind. I personally see myself doing a lot of flying around in atmosphere just for the hell of it.

It would be 10x more flawed if you could just travel these distances within a blink of an eye... Its (maybe not perfect) ok how it is.

Wasnt the original elite solution that when you got into the influence of a starport you pressed shift C and were instantly docked? i think you can do that in oolite. Does anyone want that kind of situation? choose a destinatio, press a button and you are there. I know I dont. quite happy with the way things are thank you. If flying across the galaxy means waiting a couple of minutes then i can live with that. plenty of time spent in getting speed at optimum, wiggling to avoid possible interdictions and so on

You think the travel time in this game is bad; you should try the Orbiter Space Simulator. There is no faster then light travel in that one.

Though saying that there is a time acceleration feature, but that can cause problems at times.
+1
Anyone who is into space sims has to try this.
It is worth the learning curve.
I remember it is one of the few games I have modded. Back in 2007 I remember making a custom MFD to simulate trading ore from the asteroids. Just interface stuff really and some simulated figures. not much game integration. Happy memories.
I do still compare all other space sims to it on one level.
Oh, and it is totally free as in beer.

I understand your concern, but I think you want this game to be something it was never intended to be - non stop action. I don't think this game is meant to be something that requires all your attention at every moment. Most people who play and enjoy this game will do so while watching a movie, chatting with friends, or listening to music. Eve is the same why and while it is extremely successful, many people can't play it because the feel the same way you do about ED. Space is filled with mostly "nothing." And this game is meant to be more of a space flight simulation. It's simply not going to entertain you every second you are logged in. And I don't believe it is designed to. But I do however believe ED will be wildly successful.

I don't know why some people regarding criticising the current travel system as a cry for "non stop action" and that those that do are lazy and over-pandered-to.

It's very boring.

And it's not like we're flying the ship ourselves during it.

If you approach this game as an arcade game it is boring.

If you approach this game as a space flight simulator in simulated galaxy this is part of the experience.

There are many non-simulators you can try. Good luck and bye bye!

If you are serious about "simulated" galaxies, I suggest you try the X series of games. Even X Rebirth has currently more depth in regards to a simulated economy. Also, take a look at Limit Theory.
Elite is at this point barely worthy of being called a simulation in that regard.

Seriously, there's too many people here who seem to barely know a thing about hardcore space sims and yet go around praising Elite's faults as if they were part of some finely crafted experience that only select connoisseurs can appreciate. It is not, it is flawed in more than one area and the sooner we acknowledge that the sooner we can make it a better game for all of us.

I know you think you are being loyal to the game or whatever, but you are simply hurting it with your blind praise.

That said, I don't think travel can be "fixed" without making a pretty big overhaul of many aspects of the game, so I suggest we focus on stuff that can be improved, such as faction and diplomacy mechanics, market depth and the complexity of the manufacture processes.

I'm not sure that praising X-Rebirth and Limit Theory testifies to your superior judgement of space sims. :p

I realize that if I am bored or not having fun it is because I'm just not doing it right!

Maybe I will learn to play the game properly eventually. I'm trying, I really am.

I find super-cruise just as entertaining as the old Star Dreamer approach in Frontier/FFE. I love seeing other ships flitting about (AI or player) and I love the sense of scale. However, I would like to see the option to micro-jump to other stars in the system, or a 'torus-drive' straight-line 'boost' function, if only as compromise gestures to the people who really don't like the approach, to keep them in the game. I've also no problem with autopilots for SC, as long as they move slower than a player would be capable of to allow interdictions. Conversely, I've got no problem with higher class FSDs offering considerable acceleration/deceleration advantages. I'd also like to know if we are ever going to get gravity slingshots as per the old DDA at some point in the future.

Some interesting comments appearing.

My problem with supercruise isn't the length of the journeys, it's the lack of danger and absence of the unknown.

It's designed to create a sense of wonder and scale, not tension and danger.

It's gone for the opposite emotion from the original Elite.

I didn't really take note in which kind of system this happened (my guess would be Anarchy mostly), but I do get interdicted a lot, which brings tension (but because I'm a passable pilot not too much danger). Also, it's always a good idea to check what kind of ships are flying around while in SC and if possible get an ID lock on them, and depending on your findings ("hmm .. viper, Dangerous, wanted?! oh.. and approaching at a suspect pace!") that also can bring some tension in your routine :)
