Release Elite Dangerous HUD Mod (EDHM)

Those cool bananas at EDHM have patched the orange after U17 :)
Seconded, they're bloomin' heroes who work super hard to restore EDHM to its full glory asap after pretty much every update invariably changes some aspect of the game's shaders which tends to revert some or all of ED back it's it default orange.

If you're new to EDHM and find that, after an update, your HUD is back to it's default orange ... don't panic (or grumble), give it a day or two and the legends who work on this will have it working again as soon as humanly possible.

Yeah I have to admit, EDHM is pretty much essential to me. I can do without all the third party stuff, but every time I put on my VR headset after an update I am reminded of the very hard truth how "loud" the stock orange color scheme is on the eyes, and that I can't play without EDHM.

Thumbs up for the hard working people keeping that mod alive.

There is EDHM_UI which provides a classic installer for Windows. It allows you to install and use EDHM.
Being on linux could i rename the installer and run it in place of edlaunch, set it up as i wanted it and then be on my merry way?
(asking this because otherwise i will have to find a workaround involving lutris/wine instead of just steam proton)

cheers

certainly edhm ui provides an installation program but which does not give the choice of choosing the location of the installation directory

I had to use third-party software to personalize the installation, which is a shame

Yes edhmui is the new auto-installing version in an .msi-container.

The default installation location is where i want it due to proton, i just need to know from the dev if renaming it is possible or i need a dedicated linux version.

From the edhm discord

<@540631859520864258> Ok so the trick is :
1. install EDHM_UI in a different "prefix" than the Elite Dangerous one.
2. install .net 4.52 in that "prefix" using winetricks (there's a sticky by ThornedRose about that in this channel )
3. use ctrl+click in the game locator window to select Elite's folder (EDHM_UI can't locate Elite when it's running)

...
"I made a mistake.
For steam, you need to install protontricks (not winetricks) from the discover store (it should be a shopping bag icon on your toolbar)
"

Thank you so very much for the information! o7

Here ist the sticky metioned above to complete my answer.

"Good news! Thankfully my spouse worked out how to do it! 🎉 We used Winetricks to make it easier. We had to install EDHM UI to our system default Wine prefix (usually ~/.wine). We ran winetricks first and made sure that an appropriate version of .NET was installed. Once that was confirmed, ran in a terminal: wine /path/to/file/EDHM_UI_Setup.msi and followed instructions to install, then ran the app. The GUI is a bit flaky in wine but it works. We then directed the app to the appropriate Steam Proton prefix (see screenshot).

The issue (we're 90% sure) is that Proton has issues with installing .NET 4 and above. So by installing EDHM UI in a Wine prefix and directing EDHM to the Proton prefix, you can bypass the issue 🙂"

You can also install EDHM-UI via Bottles and point it to the Proton prefix. You will need to give Bottles read and write permissions to the Proton prefix folder if you installed it with Flatpak. It's one command in the CLI.

Does EDHM-UI need admin rights every time your run it? I fully expected the admin prompt when I installed it. I didn't expect it every time I start it up (haven't let it progress to modify anything yet). For those of us who refuse to run with admin rights on our normal Windows account, will this work? If not, I'll uninstall it. Just asking.

Are you actively intending to use live features like changing themes when changing ships or so? Otherwise, you don't need to run the UI at all after applying a theme. You can just occasionally start it to download updates or when you want to change/tweak a theme. I know this doesn't fix what your concern is but just saying it to note that it shouldn't be a regular issue if all you want is set a theme after an installation/update, and then carry on. The admin access is probably required in order to be able to mod the game regardless of where you installed it. It's ultimately up to you if you trust it.

Thanks for the info, but I've already removed it and given up. While I reserve the right to complain about shoddy practices, I am aware the authors were producing it for free so I get that. But for the record, here are my complaints:
1. Support/guidance requires you to join their Discord server. While that's fine for additional questions, that shouldn't be required for the basic installation instructions and FAQ.
2. You need to exclude the programs director from AV scans. Apparently this is due to them not wanting to pay $400 to have their program registered, but this was a red flag for me.
3. Even after doing #2 you may need to run as admin. That's another red flag.
4. They said that due to where the files are stored (My Documents), OneDrive would need to be disabled. Uh... no. That's three strikes and you're out.

For those of you who use it, I'm glad you have it to enjoy it. I'll live without it. Again, it is free software, so one can't complain too much. However, I will point out that the EDMC that I use is also produced for free and behaves extremely well (only prompts for admin rights when it needs to install an update).

We use Discord as our primary support channel. It's a convenient platform for various reasons and it's also easily accessible to the community (most people have a Discord account, but not necessarily a GitHub account).
Basic information is publicly available on the EDHM_UI website.

You should know that EDHM is a mod that allows you to customize your interface.
EDHM files are placed in the game's directory so that the game can load them at startup.
EDHM configuration files are .ini files that can be edited using a text editor like Notepad to enter your custom settings.
Since this is not very intuitive, there is a user interface that allows you to edit these .ini files using a more intuitive interface than a text editor (EDHM + UI = EDHM_UI).

Before, EDHM_UI only requested administrator rights during installation, but it turned out that in most cases, EDHM_UI could not modify the EDHM configuration files because the program did not have write permissions in the game directory. Remember that EDHM files are placed in the game directory so that the game can load them at startup.

To answer the comparison with EDMC, EDMC does not need to access the game directory unlike EDHM and EDHM_UI, which explains why EDMC does not require administrator rights to function.

It's this kind of mechanism that can trigger warnings with certain antivirus programs. Unfortunately, since EDHM must be placed in the game directory, we cannot avoid this behavior.
There is a paid certificate that could solve some of these problems, but EDHM and EDHM_UI are free and we do not accept donations, so it is not possible for us to invest financially in a certificate that is not a guarantee of reliability and security. We already invest a lot of our free time in the development, maintenance, and support of EDHM and EDHM_UI.
We prefer to offer EDHM and EDHM_UI for free and let users choose whether or not to install the program.

Regarding OneDrive, you should know that the EDHM_UI configuration files (EDHM_UI, not EDHM) as well as themes are stored in the user's documents, but it turns out that if OneDrive synchronizes this folder, the program can no longer access these files, as if they were not in the indicated location. There may be a solution to work around this problem, but we haven't found it yet.

For those who do not want to install EDHM_UI, you should know that it is possible to use EDHM alone, but this means that there is no user interface to configure it, you have to do it with a text editor, there is no theme, no automatic theme change, no automatic installation, no automatic update. It's quite difficult to get started but it remains a possibility.

I hope I have answered all your questions, which I find legitimate. As we always say, the choice of whether or not to use EDHM and EDHM_UI belongs to the users.

Thanks for your response.

For the record, I have all my game files (Steam, Epic, etc.) in directories on a separate drive from the system drive. Users have full access to those files, so I wouldn't have had an issue with the admin rights being needed for the game files to be modified.

I've been running in user-level mode since I started using NT 4.0 in 1997, so I'm well versed on how to get things work when the programmer's don't know how to build their programs with that model in mind. It doesn't sound like that is the case here (for me, anyway). It looks like it's a UAC/signature issue. Oddly, even when I granted the exemption I still got the prompt. Meh.

As I stated, to make HDMI_UI work - and I would need it at least initially, as I was planning on installing a particular theme - is more risk than I'm willing to accept. That isn't an indictment against what you've made. Thank you for explaining the technical reasons your program needs these exemptions. It makes sense. And again, your program is free. That's less irksome than a certain company that makes and sells addons (trying to being vague here) for Elite that require the user to have admin rights to install and update their packs; their issue could be solved by moving the serial number registry to the HKLM\Software section instead of putting under the local users section. Yes, you have to give users full file permission rights to the program directory, but that's it. All that is at risk then of corruption is their program and not your entire system. I've corresponded with them many times and they won't budge. So, as I've had to do with other for 27 years now, I work around them and keep things contained. After three decades, my patience is wearing thin on this, particularly since I fight this battle at work as well as home.

Anyway, thanks for the technical info. I'm not playing Elite often enough, nor do I need the customization enough, to warrant messing with this further.

Just forget it

EDHM UI not working anymore never had problems withit but after the latest update it does not work

Really love this mod, and thanks to all that keep it working, but I can confirm, it is no longer functioning.

In the past it's taken a bit of time for them to get things rollling again after an update.

Give them a bit and I'm sure we'll get word one way or another.
