basically what David says in interview is that it is Chris Roberts fault that we don't have any good space sims for past 10 years, because his freelancer was not a success and publishers turned away from the genre :p

even funnier now is watching to his return with a jingle "pc games are not dead", after he killed them in the first place ;)

Well, it is hard to understand what really happened there - as far as I know, project run out of funds, publisher requested changes in exchange for additional funding, Chris left because those nasty publishers, Microsoft was left alone to finish the game.

So as it ran over the budget it is quite understandable that it had hard time to get money back for Microsoft. Also Microsoft could write it down, but any other publisher just look at it and said - stay away from this genre, it is not worth it.

Was it CR fault? Hard to say. Only someone with insight in all that could explain what happened.

I have to admit... I'm surprised with how poorly Star citizen is coming off. If it weren't for Elite Dangerous I'd be worried that Star Citizen would sink Space sims AND kickstarter for a long time. :( (Bought the Constellation so don't think I'm bias)

Frontier is really nailing this one... What a treat! :D

Star citizen is just horrible so far. If I could remove my money I would. But I'll just let it play out instead, maybe Chris can pull this one out of the fire. (Not holding my breath)

I think you're forgetting that for one of the first times you're witness to the full production of a big computer game. This is how it goes. It's difficult and sometimes problematic to pull off but at the end there will be a working product. Be assuerd that neither Chris Roberts or David Braben will rest before their games live up to their wishes and requirements. The leadtime for SC is just a big chunk longer than it is for E: D right now. That's obvious: CR needs to setup a gaming studio from the ground up. Where Frontier had a running start plus they had skunkworks in the background for years.

You see.. both development cycles are hard to compare to eachother eventhough their Kickstarts were near simultaneous.

I'd like to say: If you can't handle the heat, stay out of the kitchen. But I really don't want to sound too harsh. So I'd better say: Sit back and enjoy the ride... It's gonna be a wild one! :D

This.

Although it is true SC has a higher risk of losing focus by trying to deliver in so many fronts at the same time. It is a much more complex way to manage a project and it will naturally subject itself to larger risks.

At the end of the day, when both games are live the real situation will be that some aspects of each game work really well and will have lived up to expectation, while other aspects will not work as well as intended at the design phase.

In any event most likely both games will be very very playable and fun for most of us.

We usually polarize these discussion to a black or white, "YES" or "NO", pass or no pass, kind of outcome for each game, while the reality when the time comes is that it will probably be neither.

Does anyone know WHY it wasn't a success? I thought it was a great game, despite the arcady controls.

Everyone was still going doolally over console games. Homeworld 2 came out in the same year on PC and didn't fair too well.

Freelancer took about 7 years to reach the shelves after Robert's announced it and he apparently was pushed to release it by the publisher (just like Braben) so it didn't have the dynamic persistent universe he had originally envisioned. Still reviewed quite well.

Timing is apparently good now the PC space game market hasn't been saturated for well over a decade and everyone is nostalgic about titles they never played and believing FMV showcase disk swapping fest wing commander 3 to have been the pinnacle of home entertainment

Sorry I almost managed two whole paragraphs without getting overly cynical.

It was rushed, released very, very incomplete. As in, probably half the story line and planned features missing. It had a vibrant online and modding community, however, I have some very fond memories of the game (and also a number of peeves which weren't exclusive to Freelancer, but almost all space games, ever, like unrealistically tiny planets and distances).

Don't forget that they have to massively tweak the CryEngine of Crytek! This was developed as a fps-engine and now they have to do a lot of work to use it as an engine for a spacesim.
The cobra engine from FD on the other side was always built and maintained with a new elite in mind so it is probably the only engine out there that was and is ready for this huge endeavour.

No stream feed for it?

I was there it just happened. I got a t-shirt from David B and I'm super happy.

David B is a great speaker and I could listen to him all day.

Apologies if this has been answered before, but is anyone from the ED team going to be showing the game at PAX Prime in Seattle WA, USA next week? It would be a great way to get the game noticed by American gamers.
