Elite Dangerous in the Media thread

Interesting that the very first alpha build we will get will be AI combat only, no multiplayer. I'm not bothered by that news, it's just interesting.

That's the part I found interesting. Makes sense of course, they need to get the basics right and one way to do that is to take other players out of the equation so you know as a player what's what. Also means you can test regardless if other players are online.

Correct, you start off with AI because AI behaviour needs to be right oh and AI behaviour is something you can tweak!

PvP or multiplayer is a quest in it's own right, it will need a dedicated section all to itself because you just cant cater for all scenarios, so you get the basics right with AI and then add the MP element.

I would anticipate it going:
P vs AI
MP vs AI
PvP
MPvMP

or similar... Of course knowing me it will be something else entirely, lol.

Rock Paper Shotgun interview David Braben and play the Alpha

Great article here from someone who's obviously a big fan of the series:

http://www.rockpapershotgun.com/2013/12/13/hands-on-with-elite-dangerous/

He was also the very first person outside of Frontier to play the alpha! He gives his impressions in the article, alongside some discussion with Braben.

The most interesting and exciting part comes at the end:

Braben believes Dangerous might be the final chapter of Elite, but also the beginning of something immense and far-reaching. According to Braben: “What we’re doing with Elite: Dangerous is building a consistent world that we will never need to change again. We’ll be able to add to it. I don’t think there will be a sequel to this game, ever. It will carry on. The game in ten year’s time will look completely different from the game now.”

Just read that. Great stuff.

I'm quite pleased this could be the last Elite ever - shows the longevity FD are going to put into it and the scope for expansion planetary landing and walking will bring.

The game is limitless in scope. People will have to accept its no longer just a space game, while that will always be the core aspect, it'll evolve way beyond just space imho. Done right, I can see this game going for decades.

Excellent Alhpa review and it gives the real sense that Braben has been building to this for the past 20 years. Sure, he has made great games since but they were all building in some way to this true vision for how he wanted Elite to be an entire world and not just a game. The technologies and game design theories he has been advancing are now all coming together and this is what is so tremendously exciting about what we are seeing.

Why-o-why didn't I upgrade to the life-time expansions option :(
Nothing stopping you now - expansion pass is only £35 in the new store. Absolute bargain.

A very good interview there by the way.

Heh, I was going to post the article, but saw this thread in time. Being a professional astronomer, and elite kid, I just about fired all tubes when David talked about Achenar being out of the Galactic plane so you get a great view of the galaxy!

Yup! The real simulation of the galaxy is going to be so wonderful. It's so great that Frontier want to do more than just make a game here - this will be a testimony to many of humanity's achievements, and a model of things far beyond our imagination. It makes all other space games look like toys in comparison.

Great article that confirms that ED is a great game and will be even greater in the future. He also confirmed that it is indeed Achenar, and no Achernar

Absolutely completely and utterly what I want. That quote rings bells, sweet bells of delight :)

Thanks for the post.. a really nice article.. I bet that was a bit of pressure for the journalist, first person to play the alpha and 3 FD devs inc. David Braben watching :D
