Elite Dangerous is being showcased at PC Gaming Show RIGHT NOW - Just confirmed in the promo!!

It seems to me that the deeper we get the more disappointing it is:
  • atmospheric planets: only thin atmosphere (after 6 years from launch are we still there?)
  • legs: FDEV keeps avoiding discussion about walking inside the ships (I already hate the transition in the SRV, that breaks all the immersion, I could never stand another transition for legs too).
  • old planets: who cares?! I've always hated airless planets! Stop developing that 💩 and focus on the real atmospheric planet
  • VR: do I need to add anything?
Elite Dangerous Odyssey: welcome to the Next Era of disappointment 😒
And yet only yesterday you were badgering them to do other stuff instead of focusing on this kind of stuff.

Literally yesterday.

🤷‍♂️

(And masquerading some divisive stuff as being QoL as part of that...)

I love this place! 😃

Positive fdev interview on PC Gaming Show.

You are not my mate, and you are not my fellow DJ!!!! Goodbye forever!!!!

I really try to give FD the benefit of the doubt each time, but lol, I’m not holding out for much more than walking being srv with legs, mission giving npc a bit more fleshed as per leaked movie files left in update, and as described tenuous atmosphere planets with some planet shader improvements which mean Vr doesn’t work anymore...
I’m still looking forward to it though and will give it a go.

that was just a lost opportunity. the interview didn't give any new or any meaningful information at all. it felt very rushed and barebones. we got more information released on this website than on this show that was watched by over 70k concurrent people. having a 1st person mode in this game is a huge deal. a game changer. this interview didn't convey this at all. i start to get the suspicion that fdev actually don't have anything to show yet. perhaps they don't even know where to go.

don't blow this fdev. you have the potential to make the game explode. make it right.
Go on then, explain exactly how it’s a lost opportunity.

We had the info given to us before the show. Lost Opportunity?

Very little extra info given in the show. That basically brought a wider community up to the same speed as some of the ED playerbase. So what’s actually the lost opportunity there? An opportunity to drive some ED playerbase traffic towards PCGaming? An opportunity to have people complaining because info was provided to the PCGaming audience before it was provided to the ED playerbase? Go on, do tell us.

This "whole new game' levels of gameplay" doesn't look that different from srv specially if it end up with no ship interiors or Eva.

Possibly. I think the distinction here is that the majority of the features mentioned to date are hooked to Legs gameplay. If we were to recast the main beats of the PR as 4 Seasonal updates, as per Horizons, there’s more overlap between them, whereas the SRV was never supported by the later Horizons additions etc.

Maybe they’ve learnt from Horizons and are doubling down on content for the headline feature. Guess we’ll see.

(If that is what they’re doing, then keeping to a narrower remit for locations / game mechanics isn’t an awful idea. Gives you more time to make both half decent, and to fill out the content that accompanies them.)

I think Odyssey will just have space-legs on planet surfaces sadly. However this means the majority of the development would be concluded in terms of the walking animations. Therefore I think we will see a further expansion, especially if Odyssey does well in terms of sales.

2021 - Odyssey (Space legs on planet surfaces)
2022 - Space legs interiors (Space legs in player ships)
2023/24 - Space legs in starports/ fleet carrier
2023/24 - Atmospheric landings on Earth Like Planets

I believe that the interiors will require less work than the Odyssey expansion. This is because the walking animations and other hand/interaction mechanics on foot will already exist by this point. Therefore the interiors can be designed per module. The developers can build the interiors using a block system so for example a Level 6 Module will take up X amount of space and the interior compartment of Y ship will fit X space metres squared. The module's looks can be designed at a level 1 size and then scale up as the size increases; Just like how a H4 Multicannon is similar to a S1 Multicannon however enlarged in size.

Once this format is made as groundwork, the rest of the ship interiors can be essentially copied and pasted. With certain features hand placed and any issues with sizing dealt with by a developer. Hopefully this would be one of the easiest parts about designing space legs for interiors. Next would come the coding elements which I foresee as being very difficult.

The coding will be tough because:
  • The game will have to make the Player human as the centre, rather than the ship. Fundamentally this will change the game in many ways. For example, how will a player who does not own interiors DLC move around ect?
  • Will I be able to walk onto my friends ship and move around inside it too? If so what happens to my ship if I am with a friend?
  • Each part of the interior will have to be foolproof. The last thing we want is to be glitched out of our ships and fall through space!
  • What will we be able to do inside the ships? Engineering or is it just for the role-play? Will we be able to fix hull breaches and fight pirates inside the ships?
  • If I am walking around my ship in super-cruise, what happens if I get interdicted? Will the ship fight the interdiction/disengage? Will the ship fly and fight until I can run to the cockpit? This would be a fun experience to go through however it would be difficult to implement I imagine.
  • If my ship is destroyed, what happens to me the human player? Do I have to get into an escape pod or will I just teleport to the nearest station. If its the latter = Immersion broken!
These are all challenges Frontier will have to face. However if they can implement it, they will make ££££ bank! £££
Not only will people pay £30 for it, the ARX and customisation options will surely make this DLC more than profitable. In addition, with the successful implementation of space leg Interiors and Odyssey why would people even play the games of our competitors? Star Citizen may well die overnight.

TL:DR

Everyone, do not panic. I strongly believe that Odyssey will just be the foundations for more content such as Interiors and Full atmospheric planets in the years to come. Frontier have said that they foresee Elite carrying on in development until 2024. We still have 3.5 years left.

How about combative boarding, cargo stealing, shooting pilots in FPS and hijacking a ship, just for beginning? It already exists and works fine along with multiplayer in
  • Empyrion
  • Space engineers
  • SC
  • DU

Yeah you've missed the point sunshine. If they're not targeting related gameplay for Odyssey, then ship assets alone would be a waste of dev time.

But enjoy your fanciful scope creep by all means ;)

Without at least being on par with them, Odyssey is outdated before even being released. And simultaneously the VR support dropped just in favor of those sky gradients thin atmospheres and slow SRVs planet legs. Looks strange for an update "being developed during 3 years by 100+ talented employees"
Of course, you and StuartGT will by 2-3 accounts each, as well as other few fanatics. But i'm afraid that will not be enough for FDev to justify any further ED development, especially when lazy-developed park games provide twice much profit on the same time intervals.

Hah, I have one account for ED, and that's enough thanks. Doesn't seem to have caused doom for ED just yet. I'm sure them expanding the game and selling a big DLC will definitely do that though ;)

Ironically you guys are the Joeblobers of Elite Dangerous forums..

The irony being they have proc gen weather effects in PC (at least rolling clouds) and weather from JPE.

NMS is going to retro dunk ED even with its simplistic weather at this rate.

When people asked what the point of lifeless atmo planets was, I always thought of weather and its impact on the flight model. If we get neither, the entire "they are taking their time as they don't want it to be just a blue shader!" rhetoric is pretty dead too.

So far following the confirmation of 'spacelegs in some form confirmed" there has been little actual exciting news to counter disappointment after disappointment. If there is no VR, no in-ship walking, no 'impactful' atmospheres and no flora&fauna then whatever it is they did do better be good.

I am hoping to hear more about what is going to make this a fun expansion. :)
