Elite Dangerous is not a sandbox

In other words - trade, fight or map unexplored systems or do some randomly generated missions by NPCs to get the ship you wanted. Once you have explored a bit and obtained the gear you wanted, nothing you have described will have any importance to you. All this will take approx 30 hours to complete.

Exploring the unkown will be cool for a while. Seeing an alien artifact floating in space will be cool once, but the second time you don't care.

If that is all you see in this, I am sorry but you have no imagination.

Well, the game is still in development so we don't know yet what Elite will become.

EvE is equally pointless.

Sure, those epic fleet battles sound great on paper, until you realise the combat consists almost entirely of clicking a name in a list every five minutes and watching a slideshow unfold. Hell, you don't even get to choose the name most of the time...

In fact, the sheer and utter tedium of the actual game is one of the reasons the meta-game is so popular. Many of the mechanics, including territory control, are utterly broken. So don't come here and pretend like the game is some shining light of compelling gameplay. It sucks, even the most hardcore players admit that, but that's not why they play.
I smell bees chomping cigars. I'm going to stock up on bug spray.
This rubbish again?

SA has 200,000 members. Most of them aren't trolls, most of them aren't in goonfleet. This shrill finger pointing every time someone even mildly contentious appears is getting pretty damned tedious.

You might be surprised at who is and isn't a goon, including at least one high profile youtuber who is actually working his ass off to promote Elite around the internet (and doing it very well I might add).

This stuff actually isn't terribly difficult to find out... the forum is almost entirely public (most of the time, sometimes it's gated when the traffic gets too high). So why don't you pay a visit and read the Elite thread over there? You might be pleasantly surprised, and see just how tragic this paranoid nonsense actually is.

Or do you prefer having convenient bogeymen around?

Well, if that's EVE for you then I feel sorry for you. For many, EVE is all about getting tangled into social networks (corporations), spying into a competing one for months with a help of a spy, and then have someone streaming a visual of a warp gate on a secret web page for us to see when there are no enemy freighters around and safe for us to travel, and planning for an attack in a massive scale for months. That's the EVE for many of us.

Speaking as someone who played EVE for years and seen all of that, the above what you talk of there. From every level right up to CEO, Executor, top end capital ship, titan. I can honestly say, I'm crap tired of all that guff over in EVE. All the spying you speak of the backstabbing, the arguing, the oh so not personal crap that goes on on TS and ends up turning extremely personal because you've invested time and effort into people and their egos and warp character traits have flipped out.

Do I want a bloody repeat of all that again, for another 10-11 years? Do I want the RP/PvP side of the game dragged down the toilet again and taken to a place where it is driven by nothing more than a handful of megalomaniacal ego tripping nutjobs? Um? No, I don't want ED to go anywhere near that kind of crap! Personally I've had enough of it and hand enough of characters that love to live it.

No, ED is like a breath of fresh air, and EVE feels like a vacuum! That gagging feeling you get when you just can't breathe, thats what EVE is. And you and a few others here are asking for a repeat of that chack here? Seriously? Lets imagine theres a fence here, EVE on that side ED on this, I'd suggest you take that EVE chack and keep it over that side of the fence, ED will be ED ... it most definitely doesn't need to have any input from the EVE model ... period.

If you can't play the game "in an EVE way" with your mates, well that's just tough, go continue playing EVE. Other than that, how about you and the others here get with the program and understand that ED is what David Braben and FD want it to be ... and that is most definitely "not EVE 2.0"!

Utter nonsense. Have you actually ever played EVE? If you would, you would understand that the game is all about social interactions and about your status in the society. It is literally an alternative universe for those who play the game. People are taking the game very seriously and actions have real consquences.

If you fail your npc mission in Elite, no one cares.

Yes?

Yeah... you think you'd be better at this, given you apparently get so much practise.
People are taking the game very seriously
Yeah, exactly.

If you fail your npc mission in Elite, no one cares.
Oh look you're so hardcore. I bet in game you're just another Empire hugger, or at best a renter who packs up his stuff as soon as a real fight rolls up on his doorstep.

Yes - the real consequences being? Oh wait, there are none.

You may get your Eve boss shouting at you for posting in a forum without written permission from the board. You may get kicked out. You may find yourself lost and lonely with no cash. You may even find yourself wondering why you are playing computer games and getting so dependent upon them, that actions in them have real consequences.

That is unhealthy.

And as for SA members - I care not one iota. I don't believe in bogeymen, convenient or not. I could as well have used Atari ST users - but I thought goons would be more relevant and understandable for people who probably aren't 80's n00bs.

Yeah, that's what real life is for. I think the kind of people who will enjoy ED are those who want a break from all that stuff.

Your idealism and mine apparently differ (by leaps and bounds).
If EVE is so fired wonderful why would you want Elite to mimic it? Why not just play EVE? Why spend so much time here arguing for ED to become EVE?
What has EVE lost that ED has? Is it the expanse? The wonder?
If EVE is the end-all, be-all why not just shrug off ED as a lesser game and be done with it? Why persist? What does ED have that you want so badly to make it EVE? I'm actually curious. Please tell us what ED has that you would leave EVE to play ED even if it conformed more to your particular desires.

Or you can keep playing your Elite npc missions here and there, it's fun it's light and where no one cares if you fail a mission. Heck, you can't even contact anyone so why would anyone care? Can't wait to get my Cobra!

You do understand that you are talking to eve players here right?...

Can you name one computer game where anyone does care if you fail or complete a mission? Please?

I can't and there isn't none (on individual level at least), and I don't want Elite Dangerous to be as serious as EVE. I just hope that Elite will grow from where it was in 1984, and that there is more to it than there was in the original Elite which is to be of a rank of Elite.

I hope that Elite will evolve from its roots and take some elements from EVE and X-Rebirth, and make its own inventions like the 200 billion stars. Currently I don't see the game very interesting, and that is what this rant is coming from, I just want Elite to be a great game.

I understand your sentiment, and I'm really not trying to argue with you - but the beautiful irony is that Eve and X, and WC, and SC, and every other space game you care to mention ALL evolved from the roots of Elite.

That's a pretty poor analogy.

A wheel is the optimal shape for its function, it's not possible to make it better. Hence, don't reinvent the wheel.

You can't make an optimal game, that's like making an optimal painting, or optimal piece of music. Art just doesn't work like that.
