Elite Dangerous is not a sandbox

That's a pretty poor analogy.

A wheel is the optimal shape for its function, it's not possible to make it better. Hence, don't reinvent the wheel.

You can't make an optimal game, that's like making an optimal painting, or optimal piece of music. Art just doesn't work like that.

You are missing the point of the analogy. The wheel is already perfect, so there is no point in inventing it again!

I can't and there isn't none (on individual level at least), and I don't want Elite Dangerous to be as serious as EVE. I just hope that Elite will grow from where it was in 1984, and that there is more to it than there was in the original Elite which is to be of a rank of Elite.

I hope that Elite will evolve from its roots and take some elements from EVE and X-Rebirth, and make its own inventions like the 200 billion stars. Currently I don't see the game very interesting, and that is what this rant is coming from, I just want Elite to be a great game.

I put to you that E: D is already more than it was in 1984. Not only graphics and sound and all the rest that brings it into the 21st century but SCOPE... What other game offers BILLIONS of star systems?
Of course, your viewpoint is radically different than mine.

Perchance EVE will offer this type of content and you will find true nirvana?
I hope you find what you are searching for and if not maybe you can convince someone more flexible to the masses than FD is.

The BEST part of E: D is the those producing it are producing a game THEY would want to play. They aren;t catering to the masses or the whims of a few. Albeit if they think a suggestion fits their view of what E: D should be they adopt it, else it falls by the wayside. Being crowd-forged they are able to have this freedom instead of pushed into making compromises (beyond what technology already requires). There WILL be people who aren't geting their own view of what they want BUT there are a LOT of people who remember the hours/days/weeks & YEARS of Elite and see the love emanating with E: D. how it is Elite (and MORE). It isn't EVE 2.xx or some other game, it's the next step and what the others will branch from. If you don;t believe so, wait and see. You'll likely out live me so you can say I told you so when I've passed.
Now.. I've got space cows to find! Ciao!

For the better part of it I've been heavily persuaded against adding anything specific from Eve into E-D.

However at some point I do envisage some kind of sandbox elements around production, research, etc.

If they expand the market, move ships and modules on there - really it makes sense - But I expect it to be more like Space Engineers and could be a really fun addition to the EVA and Planetary addons.

Then this is where Elite kicks in, and you need to ship in and out cargo, defend your facilities from pirate NPCs and other players.

Please read the sign

Ok. So then PLEASE enlighten me, what is the purpose of this game?

Well, if that's EVE for you then I feel sorry for you. For many, EVE is all about getting tangled into social networks (corporations), spying into a competing one for months with a help of a spy, and then have someone streaming a visual of a warp gate on a secret web page for us to see when there are no enemy freighters around and safe for us to travel, and planning for an attack in a massive scale for months. That's the EVE for many of us.

Or you can keep playing your Elite npc missions here and there, it's fun it's light and where no one cares if you fail a mission. Heck, you can't even contact anyone so why would anyone care? Can't wait to get my Cobra!

Please don't feed the troll. ;)

Fly safe Commanders all! :)

We just need to watch the Dev Diary #2 and trough the vision of David Braben we can imagine the amazing future that ED has, and realize that the Universe that all of us will begin to explore is alive and always evolving by our actions and desicions... In each sistem there will be always something new to do.

It doesn't matter if the game is sandbox or not, as David Braben said "we will build the best game that we want to play…"

Wow, can't believe this thread is still going.

Start ED vs Sandbox and ultimately end with ED vs EvE.

The would point of ED is to have, If the game mechanics prevent you have from the fun you want then the game is not for you.

Hell my wife loves the Sim's, I personally can't see the point. But it doesn't mean its a bad game. Just that its not the game for me.

For all the people complaining that Elite doesn't have all the features that EvE has, then it just proves that ED isn't the game for you EvE is.

I can't see why you are wasting your time complaining, lifes to short to moan about things you can't change (at the moment).

Elite is totally about One Name and his/her ship in the vast galaxy fighting to make a living and having fun doing so. sort of like Firefly.

And as in the real world very few people actually have the ability to control the world, which is how it should be in elite.

If they want to make a 30 hour game, then that's fine. But I personally believe that even the dev team haven't decided yet what Elite Dangerous will become, so it is good to be vocal about the elements that we feel is currently lacking in the game as we are in the beta phase.

No, it would be a thirty hour game for you. You do not speak for the vast majority of people who would buy this game, no-one does. Constantly saying that because it won't contain certain elements means it will be a game you will only play for 30 hours so it should change makes no sense. I don't like the look of many games in Alpha, I don't decide they should change to become what I want it to be so I will play it. It was also quite obvious what the game was when it was in its crowdfunding phase.

I think it's a tad harsh to say it will be a 30 hour game, when so many people currently have invested much more than that so far. I'd say they know where they want to take the game, but exactly how they get there, well that's a different story perhaps.

I dont necessarily mean the 30 hour mark too literally, what I mean is that there is not currently enough content (game mechanics) to keep me interested once I have been able to make enough credits to obtain the ship and gear I wanted.

(Emphasis mine)

You keep on saying that we won't be able to communicate in game, which is nonsense ... You know the game is in early development... communication just hasn't been implemented yet ... Here is something for you to read Eilte Dangerous - Communication Interaction ... so can you please stop using the lack of communication in your arguments please.

Currently we are testing available gameplay elements for the bugs - this is the reason for Alpha and Beta. The difficulty is steadily increased by introducing several more gameplay elements with each new major release.
If you want to have all gameplay elements available right away then you should wait for the final release of the game. Having all gameplay elements in Alpha would make fixing everything very difficult.
