Elite Dangerous Issue Report - 10/08/2021

I'm curious about the stuff that has been broken for ages that has been on the issue tracker for ages that is still going unfixed because it's not what the most active forum users complain about.
I feel like most people are still on Horizons, what about the persisting problems there?

If you're taking a taxi, presumably because you don't want to fly a spaceship, then why would you want to queue for CQC to fly a spaceship?

I must confess since launch I only took an Apex once to get an engineer invite and have no intention of ever taking another one, but surely your target audience for CQC are people who actually fly their spaceships, not take taxis?

I like to fly spaceships, but don't like pointing my ship in one direction and waiting for 5 minutes as a number crawls down. I could go afk, but then what if I don't time it right and overshoot?

Or I could get an apex, drop into CQC, have a GREAT time for five minutes, then be back just in time to drop off and keep playing.

Supercruise times are fine from an immersion perspective, but there's no reason we shouldn't be able to do other stuff while we wait.

Thanks for the update @Zac Cocken - really great to see this comms going out!

As for the issue 1 - Problems With Lighting and Illumination - I don't think this is fixed. You can easily tell by going into the Gamma settings and having a look how different it looks depending on hardware configuration. For many people the slider has to be ALL the way to the right for the left image to be slightly visible. This makes the darkest areas of the game be visible, but at the same time brightens everything else drastically and the end effect doesn't look good at all.

If you set it too low, the overall image quality is better, but then the darkest areas are just pure black and don't display properly.

Unless the Gamma images in Options need to be adjusted accordingly to cater for the lighting changes?
it's not only this. lighting effects are a big issue that did not resolve with update 6.
If you compare EDO to HZ even after update 6 - all effects/lights / bloom is way off and colors look off hue as well.
...Look at your shield indicator in the hud and tell me it's fixed.

Sally is already pulling out noteworthy parts of the game updates as part of collating the patch notes.
I'm not referring to lost in the sea of changes in a changelog. Though that's annoying to test thru as well. I'm talking about feedback to fdev being lost in the sea of new changes...where each change can introduce new bugs ..drastically complicating troubleshooting

On why weekly releases aren't a thing, the overhead required to develop and test significant functionality at that kind of cadence for a game as complex as Elite Dangerous is monumental. I'm surprised FDev were able to sustain it for as long as they did following the release of Odyssey, and I want to say we started to feel the impacts of the limited QA time that offers with new bugs being introduced and others regressing in the later patches.
merging to a production branch and making a build shouldn't be difficult and far from monumental. It's not that the game is complex if that's a problem. It's in how the code is organized and the process that's in place for developing on it that is improperly complex. Make a pull request from a developer branch ...the person or team responsible for reviewing the changes can then pull in that change to the production branch. Run the build process at the end of the week, distribute the update.. start the process again...(building and distributing shouldn't a hugely manual task)

any impacts to limited QA time that was felt was due to the overload from the main dlc layering on top of subsequent updates that themselves were full of bugs.

I'd far, far prefer the current monthly-ish dev cycle for live releases, though I grant you that offering up beta access for some of the more involved and controversial changes would be a good idea.
This entire thing is the beta. We're in a beta now until the game has finally released at production quality and they feel good about releasing on the consoles.

That's not hyperbole ..it's just what it is. in all but name.

I think it was Arf who said recently that there are some things they feel are better shown rather than talked about. That could be one reason why at this stage there's nothing to share beyond "it's currently on the radar to do SOMETHING about in 2021".

by the time it gets to "show" it's too late to do anything significant about and i'm not sure why we'd go down the same path we just went down that failed and keep doing that like it's a fluke when it falls flat with the players. It's not a fluke. There is a disconnect with what stuff gets thought up and implemented like over at fdev and what players find actually good and fun... it doesn't make sense to leave that disconnect in place. See if something jives with the players... there is no benefit to being surprised by game mechanics and gameplay loops and no downside to knowing ahead of time what's in store.

leave the surprises for events and lore (content). Where it belongs.

Pardon, but did you just say "a" bug? Don't you know how many open bugs there are in the issue tracker?
Yes. I'm referring to a specific bug since update 6 that is causing repeated CTDs for some customers using suit loadout management. Seems to happen when purchasing a > level 1 suit. It's a CTD every time for those people who now can't use the loadout manager. A significant new issue that needs higher prioritization IMO because you have customers unable to play the game.

Zac, I'm glad you are doing this. Very nice insight and open comms. Thank you!

I have two comments. The first is that there is a bug not on this list, around suit loadout management causing the client to crash. For some of us it makes the game basically unplayable. I don't see it on this list but I hope it's addressed shortly.

The second is that the lighting being marked as fixed is confusing, because there have been issues with the gamma settings since odyssey launch. in order to get the coloration from dust clouds in space back (and I mean the light blues and different hues that would appear and disappear based on proximity to the sun) you have to turn gamma all the way up. But then that messed up illuminated areas because now they're too bright. This issue has been brought up on the forums many times but I've never actually seen a response from FD on it. So by the declaration that lighting and illumination is fixed in your list, does that mean FD does not consider there to be an issue with Gamma? Is the lack of dust coloration the new normal? Can we get some kind of update on this?
You need an angry mob of upvotes to get anything fixed. its pathetic really

While this is good info and a great effort at communicating I think the format is a bit limiting and essentially only answers questions we know to ask based on limited information. For example the recent on-foot notoriety changes which no one realized were bugged.

If possible there should be a few issues the FDev team thinks are important that aren't necessarily on the players radar on this list too.

Also giving just a single paragraph to the overall poor performance issues feels wrong, given how important it is. I'm sure it's being approached from multiple angles and it'd be nice to see it broken down more to multiple issues with potentially different release dates. This is again a limitation of the format though.

Game breaking or not, you need to win the issue tracker popularity contest first

We triage and work on issues across all platforms and this table will apply for them all.

Many if not most issues that get reported affect all platforms, but when they’re platform specific I suspect they’ll mostly be PC related since that’s where most of our players are. Even so, we’re working on many things outside of this list so if something major affects console, we’re generally likely to address that before a minor thing for PC and vice versa.
Yet there are roughly 6 things voted for in the xbox side that are not on any list and about 4+ pages of expired.
