Elite Dangerous | Issues with Launching via Steam

Colored snakes, extra long jumps, menus not responding and problems launching the game all currently happening. Suspect it's not steam related as this forum website also appears to be having issues...

Since last night all issues with slow logging in have been resolved for me, in fact I think it logs in faster than it did before when it was working ok.

Still broken for me

Yup, it was broken for me too a few hours ago, but I don't know what I did this time, somehow it fixed itself.

The sure thing is: the login > verification code > Purchase/redeem ED error loop from hell is not quite gone yet.

Greetings Commanders.

Sorry to bring such news into your Saturday, but it’s been alerted that a number of Commanders have reported issues over the last hour or so, with logging into their Elite Dangerous accounts via Steam.

The primary issue being for some that their Steam login was replaced with the ‘purchase/redeem’ routine.

As I’ve been typing this out, we are seeing Commanders being able to return to the Galaxy via Steam again, so hopefully this was a temporary situation, however an eye will be kept out for any additional reports.

Just wanted to show acknowledgment.

Please do make sure to have as super weekend as possible, however you’re spending it o7

UPDATE | CS RESPONSE:

If you attempt to link your account when prompted by the launcher, and hit a 'forbidden' message, this is simply because your account IS linked already.

No need to do anything with linking, nor to reinstall.

As soon as the communication between us and Steam is back up, your game access will be recognised again with no need for any action on your part.

General Update:

Commanders.

As we’re approaching the evening time here, we do see people able to get back into the Galaxy again in various territories and capacities.

At times, the issue has re-arisen and as always we’re grateful for your patience if it has.

The team have investigated and there is nothing currently we can add until the situation on Steam’s side stabilises, which we hope will be as soon as possible for you all.

Again, we will keep an eye on things but forgive any silence as we hit the evening o7
I was experiencing connection instabilities. I lost network connections several times. Thus, I had to quit playing last night around 10:00 pm EST.

I had no issues logging in however I've seen some npc's at settlements clipping (Or look like spawn with tentacles), not a pc problem either. I do believe this issue is server side,,

Currently experiencing the "Please purchase Elite dangerous to continue" error, despite the fact I purchased it on steam and the frontier account is linked to steam. Hopefully this resolves soon.
Seems like it took a hot moment butt it's finally recognized now and seems to be working for now.

Here we go again... sigh

I'm trapped in Steam's Failed Login Loop of Death.

I hit Existing Users Login here:

I enter the verfication code received in my email here:

And I end up here:

No amount of restarting Steam, ED Launcher, router, or my computer will fix it.

Anyone else with same issue today?

Same thing happening to my account - just arrived for the Booze Cruise. This is VERY sad - I had hoped to get a fleet carrier....
Now just floating outside of Rackham's Peak in the HIP 58832 system while they have a public holiday.
Endless loop - I tried the recommendation by AceMcKool but that did not work. Rebooted many times. Reinstalled the 60GB Elite game - no luck fixing the loop error.

Any updates on how to get out of this endless loop of login > verification code > Purchase/redeem ED error?

Thank you,
Kevin

Hi Nathan,

Thank you for the recommendation. I understand that the Forbidden error means you account is already linked.
Sadly that did not fix the issue. I also tried UNLINKING from Steam and then RELINKING and that did not fix this.
Been playing for maybe 3+ years - this is the first time this is happening and right during the Booze Cruise ......

@frontier - any thoughts on how to fix this??

Thank you,
Kevin

Had the same issue today. This is the second time this month, if I recall correctly. Managed to get it working again, but still curious as to WHY it happens.

@Leadfoot - thank you for the confirmation that it is happening to others right now - from the OP looks like this is some communication failure between Frontier and Steam.

I do not recommend uninstalling ED unless you enjoy watching a 60+GB download happening to reinstall

@frontier you mention above: The team have investigated and there is nothing currently we can add until the situation on Steam’s side stabilizes, which we hope will be as soon as possible for you all.

Can you add in an error path for when the communication is broken on Steam side?
Maybe something like: You would need to keep some login token info (on the client side for scale purposes) from the previously successful logins (with some TTL and hash signature that you can validate to ensure it has not been tampered with). Once you validate that the login token is correctly issued, not expired, and has not been tampered with, you can login the user. A TTL of maybe a week can help keep your active customers happy when Steam services fail. Of course this login path would only be needed when Steam is having issues with their authN services and only for your customers who have previously been able to successfully login . You can keep your customers happy while there are problems in the backend services. Just a thought to help while Steam works on their service resilience.

Thank you,
Kevin
