Elite: Dangerous Legacy League

Thinking of Horizons terrain features we no longer see in Odyssey, I really miss crater mounds to name but one.

Now that's just rude ;)
The Thargoid War came very, very close to getting me to download 4.0, until I started reading the reports of how Frontier has screwed it up.
There are many, many things wrong with Odyssey, more than I'm willing to type here, and of course more were added with update 14.
However, there have also been a few improvements:
- I play in VR and for the first time frame rates have noticably improved to the point where I can do without upscaling, and if I don't go near settlements things can look really impressive on the surface.
- Also, where I had the biggest problem with overly bright cockpits ruining vistas they've been toned down and look much, much better than they did
- Some of the surface and station attack locations are utterly stunning

There are absolutely bugs (not those ones) galore, but there is also some amazing scenery.
I will absolutely still prefer to play legacy for the overall planetary tech, and I'm not defending Odyssey's still too janky state, but it is also worth dipping into and maybe see how things evolve.
(Although I also think ED devs are barely resourced and unable to fix some of the larger outstanding bugs, there's no discussion on what's happening with them)

It's more like leaving your ex hooked up to life support in a vegetative state, and marrying a bright graduate with a future.

Nah, grass isn't always greener

Warning: People are going to hate me for this comment!

I recently loaded up Horizons 3.8 to return my Commander to my home system as it's now on legacy servers and as I was flying I thought to myself, I wish Odyssey could access the legacy servers for when I get tired of the Thargoid invasion on Live.

Yep, I prefer Odyssey to the old Horizons 3.8 client.

After a week of testing and thinking, I came to the conclusion that in Odyssey I will be doing what I have been doing so far - i.e. exploration and exobiology. At 3.8 I will play trading in a calm bubble.
I don't care about the war, let them all kill themselves.
I paid for Horizon 3.8 and Odyssey and I'm going to make the most of it for entertainment. No emotion, just cold calculation.

Both that metaphor and accepting odd without reservation require a notable lack of moral fiber. Or they're both just hard circumstance.

Sorry to add a point to the post..

I think the strongest conclusion is the skybox is strongly unacceptable in odd. Its a significant point. Its the one thing i personally can't unsee. The destroyed detail in the back ground and the stars is too much i think. Ill have to work on this..

That's why I'm sticking around the forums, to see how Odyssey evolves. I haven't bought it yet, as I have no desire to play it, but maybe that will change someday. I'm still interested in the story (right now that's the Thargoid War), and I actually do enjoy many of the screenshots in the Odyssey thread. In the meantime, I'm scratching the majority of my Elite itches with X4 Foundation, Space Engine, and Space Engineers. I guess one could brag that it takes THREE games to replace Elite, so there's some sugar for the fans.

EDDB stopped supporting Legacy from December 4th. :(

EDDiscovery remains the only major 3rd-party tool (3PT) with the dual mode support.

Lack of the online 3PTs support means no Legacy FC information is available outside the game.

That’s a good point. With carriers you can probably do trading the old fashioned way.. ie, look up the right economy in the right state, sample the markets with your asp, then fill up and offload via your carrier at the right prices.

It’s not that much longer to do those extra steps and you can feel good about breaking the crutch to 3rd party tools even.

Cutter route hopping at will is probably over but that honestly wasn’t that fun after gold rush payout inflation removed the shine.

Yeah - 3rd party tools are pushing me (reluctantly) back to Oddity even though I'd rather be in 3.8

Pretty ironic that when FD decided to add consoles back in the day the PC players who got ED off the ground with the crowdfunding and beta support felt that porting to consoles would diminish the PC game quality... and then of course there was Mac support - briefly.

Of course FD swore up and down that it was a non-issue...

So here we are, no consoles or Mac and a fragmented game that can't take the best characteristics of 3.8 and Oddity to at least finish with one really strong and bug free (except for the goids) PC version of ED that everyone can agree is better than all it's predecessors.

Very sad

Come on FD give us a bug free PC game that unites the base and give them the missing Gutamaya and Saud Kruger medium ships and of course

The Panther Clipper

Give us something to cheer about

We are all tired of complaining and I suspect you all at FD are tired of hearing it.

Is it really that hard to do?

Horizons planet tech has more verity and is more interesting than Odyssey. Horizons has mountains you can hill climb, crevasses you can race through.

Overall Horizon planets just offer more verity, and after exploring on Odyssey’s planets I find them very similar that gets boring.
Not to mention that Odyssey’s lighting is terrible and has problems being way too dark all over and nothing you can do to lighten it.

Have you ever loved a movie then went to see it’s sequel and it was terrible……. Welcome to Odyssey the SEQUEL

Had another fantastic cross-platform excursion last night in 3.8 with me helping folks get all their guardian unlocks in a pair of wings on XBox and PC, with me running accounts on both platforms side by side to coordinate the whole affair, with my two fleet carriers in orbit near the guardian beacon and its associated ruin on a planet in a neighbouring system to ensure resupply for every commander there, and everyone sharing a single out of game voice chat. The PC players were accusing those of us on XBox of sending them all our sentinels, as the spawns seemed way more numerous and aggressive over there. Luckily we made sure on both platforms to bring some ships loaded with point defence turrets, and everyone was able to get their blueprints.Teaching someone how to do planetary landings for the first time, that was probably the most difficult part.

Excellent. Good to know that new commanders are still coming in. :) I remember when docking and landing was a lethal challenge. Long ago. :)

We may have thrown her in at the deep end there as someone who is joining our excursion of tech broker and engineer unlocks after she only just created an account literally the last day the XBox to PC copy process was live, and who we helped grab an Anaconda on day one and kit it out in time to create a PC copy for the possibility of her grabbing a PC that can run it one day.

Dayum. A bit sad that she doesn't get to experience the whole progression satisfaction, but I understand the why. Having taken the long way round, I prefer smaller boats now, for agility and vulnerability. My Krait is the obvious favourite, but I still have a soft spot for the T6. My little brick. :)

In my opinion as previously stated and judging by many other posts on here, if FD were to revert the EDO UI back to 3.8 and match planetary graphics, then I think many commanders would be happy to continue V4. Oh! and have the option not to be hassled by Thargoids would be nice.

I went back to Horizons very briefly a few months back and as soon as I had to use the UI, I noped out.

At that point you may as well just play Legacy anyway.
I'm just saying that clearly FD want players to use EDO, but judging by comments on here including myself, people aren't happy with the UI and planetary graphics, hence why players are sticking with 3.8. (y) If FD want more players to use EDO then they will need to give them a better UI, the one most are familiar with and seem to prefer. Until that happens I'm staying put, but I'd still be open to playing Odyssey again if they improve that infuriating UI. The reason being, whether you like it or not, Odyssey will keep evolving over time whereas Legacy will eventually fade away.
