Elite: Dangerous Legacy League

@Globusdiablo feel free to add me also, another fellow Newton’s Gambit member. I also fly only Legacy, for the fantastic terrain generation.

There are also a whole bunch of pilots over at Newton’s Gambit who all fly Legacy. We mostly spend our time at Achelous 8A (as CMDR bronney says) flying/learning FA Off and there is a really great community of Legacy CMDRs who fly there.

All are welcome to come and fly with the NG boys and girls, and join NG. 👍 https://discord.gg/mACjS8h

They are a totally awesome group and have been very helpful group to this n00b.

I fly mostly in Odyssey, as that's where most of my credits are, and I'm trying to learn the Long Road racetrack at Soontill 2A (which is a challenge for me just to navigate), but I most certainly want to get to the level where I'm hooning worlds in Legacy eventually.

* I'm a strong proponent of the creation of a separate Legacy subforum.
Why not create a forum yourself, then?
Although a Discord server would make more sense, as most activity seems to have moved there from the forums here. I'm not a big fan of this, but well, it is what it is. For example, the exploration subforum here is mostly tumbleweeds these days, but the various Discords have plenty going on. Or the Stranded: Alien Dawn forums here are a ghost town, while there's plenty of talk going on on the Discord server there.

Now that Legacy is no longer active and will never again be classed as a live game why are COL 70 sectors still permit locked?
I would love Frontier to unlock those regions now that they can never be set aside for anything.
The thing is, besides the obvious problems with this, there is something else: if Frontier unlocked them for the legacy branch, then that would spoil things for any surprises should they ever decide to unlock them for the live branch, as the bodies and stars contained in systems could be known in advance. For an easy example, if people were going in to look for new Thargoid stuff around Ammonia Worlds, they'd know in advance from the legacy branch which systems contain them.
The number of systems within the locked areas is vanishingly small compared to the rest of the galaxy anyway, so even if they never get unlocked (which is quite likely, as Frontier has so far put plot stuff in, or right next to, the bubble anyway, heaven forbid that people would have to travel a distance), it's no big loss.

Every time I boot up Legacy VR I'm astounded at how gorgeous, comprehensive and complete 3.8 actually is. It is in my opinion the best VR game available on Earth today, by a country mile.
And at the same time I'm flabbergasted that FD has dropped development and promotion of the best VR game available on Earth today, by a country mile.
FD seems to be letting a huge opportunity slip through their fingers.

And well-performing. That's why I'm flabbergasted that FD has dropped being cutting edge when it comes to optimized game code. The difference in performance from 3.8 to 4.0 is astounding, while the difference in visuals is not. Which of course is also why 3.8 is the best VR game for me personally, because it runs smoothly on my computer while also looking amazing*!

* after a few modifications, of course 😜

The cockpits convinced me how nice VR is in ED. On flat screen you don't see the cockpits really. One of the best VR experiences yes, with voice attack it's very immersive. I am playing no man's sky atm, that is very immersive in VR also but the touch control scheme put me off so I play flat on that.

I am sure if EDO manages the fps, they just might tout it as "best" VR but for now, it's one of the things that lacks. Especially on foot no VR. NMS on foot is immersive af, however to reload your guns, you do that VR wrist watch press button thing so you lose all your ctrl-groups on keyboard. I am guessing FDev didn't want to spend time in creating a teleport navigation for foot for people who get easily motion sick with smooth walking (aka me), so that's another thing slowing them down. At this point I don't think they would ever implement it tbh. And whether it's even technically possible as I think EDO on foot is actually a slow "srv". You're on this foot srv.

Please don't mention the Oddity version in this thread. I consider it profanity, and it makes me gag... 🤮 ;)

Btw: What's the latest word on AX weapons against normal ships? Have they been nerfed to oblivion, or are they still viable? Does anyone have recent intel?

Last thing I did before the Great Schism was to get the double engineered Guardian Plasma weapons (forget what they are called) from the last CG, and I absolutely love them! This is for regular combat, not AX (which I'm sure they are great at too). I don't know how much of this butt-kicking has to do with the engineering vs. the base weapon, as I've never pursued the grind required to unlock them through normal means.

Know what the biggest problem with odd is.. they mindbogglingly didn't build ship interiors. Its blatant disregard for the own game and players.. i can't fathom why they didn't cut back on one or two of the dysfunctional mission types and just build cockpit interiors at least. Frontier profoundly never build narrative like the others, so if they hold themselves up with grind loops and sandbox mechanics, how is roleplay not one of those???

Point being, i think this thread would be much less than it is if they did include ship interiors. So much would have been welcomed creating room for forgiveness. Instead its just 3 bricks lined up and being sold as a house :)

No one cares about Oddity here. ;)

So I visited three popular systems today - ShinDez, Deciat, and Sol, and all three had over 400 ships pass through in the last 24 hours. I assume these must be Legacy players since the separation between Live and Legacy is 100% IIRC. That's interesting. Unfortunately nobody responded to system hails in any of these three systems while I was playing.

On the other hand, the vast majority of my relatively big friends list shows "Last seen 5 months ago", which I assume is the date of the Great Schism. I guess I need to go through and delete the vast majority of these friends. You're all welcome to add me to your list, I'm just "Old Duck" in game. Just seeing a list of active players in my social contacts would go a long way to make Legacy feel alive.

And on that note, how many of you still play in Solo? If so, I'm curious why, now that our galaxy is pretty much empty of players. I don't want to start a "Legacy Open Only" debate, but it would be nice if Solo players considered popping into Open as a show of support for the Legacy game. It's not like any gankers are still playing Legacy.

Anywho, just some observations.
I'll link to your name next time I'm in game and when back in the bubble I more than happy to look you up.
My old Squadron the GOM collective took control of more assets then any other player group yet my entire squad either stopped playing (VR mostly players) or jumped over to Odyssey leaving me all alone to watch all those systems and assets fall away. So I've been out in the black ever since. But Thargoid bashing is still fun when I am back that way.
I know its silly but what keeps me in Legacy is Flying low level high speed over interesting terrain in VR listening to my favorite music tracks.
My CMDR is Q!!!!

I'm not going to rain on their parade just because a bucket of water doused out my campfire.

Yeah i know, and its really not your fault. I was on that side of the line until end of last year.. and when you were a previous elite player... there's no other way to experience being literally closed off and ejected from the game by the developer. They've effectively kicked you out, and its not a nice feeling. They could / should have tried harder, and could / should have been direct about the system requirements, not what they were aspiring for eventually to make console support.

Many posters here took the approach of overproviding hardware... where instead was buying macs and keeping my gaming rig to support 2560x1600 at 60fps. It just makes no sense for me to upgrade when i have amazing 30 inch monitors... if rtx was in more than one game i would do it... maybe next year?

Well thankfully we do care about X4 here, LOL.

One of my biggest problems with Elite in general, and since even my early honeymoon days, is that it is EMPTY. There's a reason I bring up X4, to compare and contrast. Last night I did play a little Legacy, running a transport mission for INF to see if I can reclaim my home system. I get into my Python, and it's empty, except for me of course. The hangar around me is also empty. I return to the surface, and the control tower is empty, the apron / tarmac / whatever you want to call it is empty. There is absolutely no activity or life anywhere on any station or outpost. Compare / contrast this to a typical airport (for which a station is analogous), and it's very immersion-breaking.

Now compare this to X4, where there's usually a person waiting to guide me in for my landing (welcoming me with a salute when I disembark using a ladder / ramp), other people (and aliens) milling about in the various walkways and spaces between landing pads, and even ground crew that will come out and spray down my ship with some sort of foam on occasion. I can talk to these people and even offer some of them a job as part of my crew! Or I can just mill around myself and watch them go about their business, being occasionally greeted with a "Hello!"

Did I mention the part where I have a CREW?

This is the direction I wish Odyssey went, but it didn't. You get one little shopping plaza in a city-sized station where a dozen NPCs loiter (X4 has such spaces as well), and you get specialized ground installations with NPCs doing "What's this have to do with core Elite?" things, but space stations and outposts remain empty and boring, as does our medium and large ships. Odyssey is this separate game bolted onto Elite, rather than finishing the Elite that Frontier started out with. So the Elite you and I like to play remains empty and hollow.

And this is why, after finishing that one mission in Elite, I went back to playing X4 last night. 🤷‍♂️

ps - we also have basic ship interiors

DISCLAIMER - Don't worry, I'm not going to turn this into an X4 thread. I'm just stating what I think Elite is sorely lacking to make it feel "alive", especially as the single-player game that Legacy essentially is.

I remember players asking for simple sprite shadows in control towers and buildings, to semble life. And to have your actual crew visible in seats. No could do. Wasted opportunities.

It's one of the main reasons I usually stick to small ships and prefer outposts over stations. Being alone in an Eagle or even my Cobra doesn't bother me, and I can imagine a space outpost being similar to a small-town airport that may indeed have an empty tower depending on the time of day. Large, busy stations being empty is just.. incomplete. I might feel differently if stations were designed to look automated, but it's just the opposite - stations are designed to look like everything is people-centered, including every landing pad having its own control tower (why?), ground equipment designed for humans to handle and drive, [empty] parks with benches and walkways, etc. Everything in an Elite space station is a giant neon sign shouting out "EMPTY".

Instead of Elite Legacy, it should called Elite Langoliers, especially with the Damocles Sword of an upcoming server shutdown hanging over our heads.

But flying my Cobra in VR through a heated space battle around a space installation is still pretty epic. #EndOnGoodNote

Wow. Gremlins that eat time.

Sounds like game development....
