As part of a game news round-up at the end of last week, there was a note in there to confirm that a new game launcher will be deployed today for Elite Dangerous.


New Elite Dangerous Launcher launches at 11am BST 24/07/2023
  • At 11am BST today, we will release a new launcher for Elite Dangerous on PC. This will provide Commanders with easy access to all versions of Elite that they own.
  • We do not anticipate any major downtime.
The new launcher will be available for all supported PC game platforms.
  • Steam, Epic and Oculus store fronts will all display a prompted, small update once deployment is complete.
  • Frontier standalone launcher will prompt a 'new version automatic download and install process'.
    • The Frontier standalone launcher may be a little later to provide this process than the Steam, Epic and Oculus store fronts.

Once the launcher is deployed I will notify you here in this thread and open it up for discussion!

  • If any critical issue technical support is required on first experience of the new launcher deployment, please submit a customer support ticket at the following link.

After Download was reported as virus by Microsoft when trying to download, I eventually managed to install 'new' launcher only to be met with the message 'Launcher Version 1.7.6920.0 {1.7.6925.0 Available, see news}'
There is no longer any news, underneath the Odyssey picture where it says 'Scroll down for more' there is NOTHING!
So you have taken a working launcher that showed current news items, with the option to access the forums etc and removed all the options??? only to show 'play', 'manage' and 'versions' with a launcher version that is said to be outdated.
Biggest question is WHY?????, never ever fix something that isn't broken as invariably you end up breaking it.
Second Question is where can I download the original Elite Dangerous icon? as the new one just looks cheap and nasty.
Can we please have the old style launcher back?????????

Just saying that we do not know if this is the case. New launcher may be needed due security reasons, due issue that game was not closing properly and Im sure there are numerous other. It was mentioned in advance here on forums that is expectable that not all will work from the start. Just report problem and give Frontier some time to investigate on theirs side.

New launcher up and running on my main computer, no problem to launch the game. It's great and more modern.
But ... missing links to forum, etc. ? No doubt they will come in time. :)

Up and running on my laptop too. Of course M*soft not too happy to install programs not coming out of their store, but just install anyway.

The new launcher worked ok for me on steam/linux, but it's not really an upgrade in usability and the 3rd party min-ed-launcher which fortunatley didn't break with the update.

True, min-ed-launcher is working, but only if I launch it via Steam, so it's only a partial solution.
Edit: that's not true, min-ed-launcher is working just fine, you might only need to re-authenticate with the email code sent by frontier

The old launcher was working just fine, I did not even need to have Steam running in the background.[/S]

Can confirm that on the steamdeck (setting up not via steam):

1. The new client-installer downloaded perfectly in desktop mode.
2. When pointed at a non steam game and selecting 'proton experimental' it installed edlaunch.exe perfectly.
3. When fired up via new non steam game addition, edlaunch.exe ran and looks much better on Steamdeck.
4. Verified ID OK (much better in screen on Steamdeck)
5. Launcher with feet visible. Uograde required as had been a while. Info on screen clearer, interface better for Steamdeck as buttons aren't hidden offscreen.
6. The scroll for more does not have any more. Not sure if it is supposed to.
7. Not enough Hutton Mugs on the Interface. Danger of catching MODS. Users should be warned ;-)

Well this is odd. All I get is to download a new variant and then the file is an Unconfirmed 771402.crdownload. So no executable, and does not self install. I must be missing something????

Arhhh, windows defender strikes again. Doesn't like the look of the file type. Downloading now, fingers crossed.

standalone launcher did have download trust issues but worked fine in my case
as for the scroll down that worked too.... only there is no content to be seen on the odyssey splash screen once scrolled to bottom so ho hum

I had forgotten about this until a short time ago.

Download worked though I had to go through the not commonly downloaded routine of Keep and then Keep Anyway that I am familiar with from some of the third party tools.

A delay was caused by having to find my password and then deal with the verification email.

There is no news currently which I am fine with as it means I haven’t missed anything.

It seems to be working fine and I am sure I will get used to the new version over the next few years.

Mine installed fine but I did have to force windows to install it (it told me it was an unsigned exe and so unsafe to run - which you can work around by telling it to run it anyway, but this will put a lot of people off)
