No it's not a brand new game. It's an expansion to ED. Nothing more, nothing less.

You don't know - nobody does except the FDev team.

Everything we have been told is highly suggestive that from a technology standpoint - its a new game. If you disagree, I`d love to see a cogent argument to support your position.

It's not suggestive of anything. It's just as much a new game so far as horizons was to the base game.

We know of two things which undermine that - "new planetary tech", and No VR in Odyssey. For those reasons I`d argue that the foundation tech that drives Odyssey is brand new, which is something we have not experienced before in any "update".

IDK where you are going with this, but I also replayed Black Mesa and HL2 with episodes before playing Alyx with my wife who didn't know the original HL.
No way!

That is precisely what I did. Totally worth it because of the HL:A ending would have been far less impactful.

We gave up on Black Mesa because we couldn't get past the boss crab in Zen (well we cheated past it so I could show wifie the ending). I can't believe how hard I suck at games in my old age!

ED was marketed and sold as a VR game. Odyssey is not a separate game.
Yup

And it goes deeper than that.

Prior to ED being released DBOBE was showcasing cloud systems within atmospheres tech in ED's dev diaries. These same diaries also showcased VR. I think it has been heavily implied that landable planets with atmospheres has always been the goal even before vanilla.

We definately appeared to have an end goal which at least involved cloud systems in an atmosphere, highlighted alongside VR.

VR was heavily advertised.

Then we obstensibly started along this journey, with ED (no planets) --> Horizons (certain types of planets and promises of improved ice worlds in time) --> pressumably ending with ELWs

That is where my beef is anyway: cloud systems being showcased before release, alongside VR. There was never any indication that atmospherics weren't going to be included with VR.

It was the video showcasing atmospherics which was when I decided to give ED a try. I liked original Elite when I was a kid but it was Frontier that I fell in love with.

Having 2 tech engines inside a single game is not common but has already been performed in past games from the 90's. It is not an issue as far it is correctly handled. This "Odyssey" is refered as the new era of ED so basically it's not a ED 2 but a true dlc as Horizon.
By the way that is what worries me the most, as if the "First person experience" requires a brand new thech which decolerates this part of the game from the rest ( hence the no VR at launch) , that almost certainly kills the hope of seeing a true "space leg" (walk in and around ships ) . And I think that's the most important point Frontier should state about quickly. They'll lose less players by admiting early the "no ship walk" rather than hidding the truth and letting people be disapointed at the release.

We have had new planetary tech once when horizons was launched and later to loose all that beige.

And the loss of VR it most likely down to first person perspective play, not the planetary tech.

Neither are suggestive of a new game.

Yes, clearly not a new game. It is simply new tech applied to the existing game, in the form of a dlc. They also mentioned that Odyssey owners will be able to walk around the non atmospheric horizons planets. Am expecting to see visual upgrades for all versions. Implementing VR into the new FPS mechanics will not be easy, am not holding my breath.

Is it? Where is that announcement?

I'd wait until they tell you that, to be honest.

That argument works both ways ;-)

The whole discussion is speculative and I`m simply doing what were all doing on this thread by making inferences based on what precious little we have been told.

But my point still stands. If Odyssey turns out to be is anything like the teaser trailer, then it sure as hell is not built on the graphics engine that drives the game today - something FDev made specific reference to in the announcement.
