ANNOUNCEMENT Elite Dangerous: Odyssey PC Launch Date

Try to build a fleet of 30+ fully G5 engineered ships for various roles and tell me how you will manage that without grinding. There are a lot of materials involved that must be farmed, as just running across them in large enough quantities is just not happening. My fun begins after I've acquired all my G5 precision tools and get to use them.
You don't need a fleet of 30+ fully G5 engineered ships. Again, this is something you have chosen to do yourself. Nowhere in the game does it say you need 30+ fully engineered ships.

You've only got yourself to blame for that one am afraid. As I said, the only grind is the grind you bring with you. If you can only find fun when you have the best of the best, then that's an issue with you, not the game.

Greetings Commanders,

We're delighted to announce that the PC version of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey will launch on Steam, Epic Games Store and the Frontier Store on May 19th!

Your feedback during the alpha period has been invaluable and made this release date possible. We'll continue collecting your feedback throughout the upcoming alpha phase 4 and beyond launch as we work on further improvements and content updates.

Console development continues behind the scenes with an Autumn release still on schedule.

There's still time to pre-order Odyssey and get your hands on the exclusive Pioneer suit skin. The Deluxe version of the pre-order is also still available for those who want to hop into the alpha which is expected to end on April 30th.

We'll see you on foot planet-side!

will this work on GeForce Now?

The only ships that may require engineering are combat ships.
For exploring/mining/trading ships, engineering is mostly a convenience.
I have a explorabeluga that is engineered to f for jump range, useablity and flexibility

it has a fighter bay, soon 4 SRV bays and a 50yr jump range, full mining and research capabilities, depending on if any new ship modules come with EDO.

and it cost $300m and a ton of mats :ROFLMAO:

PS: if anyone can tell me how to get the heat down a little it would be appreciated :ROFLMAO:

Manage your module priorities (most of them are currently at priority 1), turn off modules when you know you won't need them (you won't need your xeno utilities, planetary vehicle hangar and frame shift wake scanner when mining for example)

You won't like it, but replace that mass manager special on the FSD with thermal spread. Same with the power plant.
Like I said, a convenience...

Edit: If you really want to boost your jump range, just unlocking the Guardian FSD booster will do the trick.
No engineering,,,
You still need materials for that, although only once.

I can thermal the powerplant and only lose .06ly of jump range so thats a good plan, the FSD I lose too much but its a start (y)

You don't need any of that to explore. All of that is your own choice. As it goes, I have engineered modules for my Explorer Krait MkII, but I haven't had to do any grind to get them.

which is a grind

Yes, you don't have to grind and you don't have to engineer everything and unlock all the guardian tech etc. but that's basically how Frontier designed the game. Even Powerplay is a grind although you get to choose the type of grind, you're not limited to just hauling or just combat.

My fear is that Odyssey will be introducing another long-term grind. All new materials, all new engineers, all new unlocks to add to the current grinds and make one huge grinding extravaganza.

But I won't care too much if they optimize it properly lol. I gave up on the alpha, it felt like my PC was gonna melt.

Sorry if this has been asked already.... In Phase 4, my alternate a/c pilot is called Jack and in the main game I'm Rusty.
So as Rusty's ship and assets are porting over, are they being ported into Jacks profile or will I be Rusty in the Odyssey phase 4 which could mean any progress made in Odyssey (suit/weapon upgrades) will be lost?

It tickles my sense of the ridiculous reading some of the comments from a (relatively) small number of forumites - it is as if they are terrified that Odyssey will be a succesful release...

Very strange...
It’s actually kind of an odd proposition ...

On the one hand, I obviously want the Odyssey release to go well ... the new graphics, planets, etc will all be great to see on PS5 when that eventually happen so FDev going bust due to a bad release or having to bug-fix forever is clearly not going to be a good thing!

On the other hand, I’m not (personally) spectacularly interested in any of the FPS gameplay or taking taxis around the galaxy ... but if the release goes too well, it’s possible that FDev will take the popularity of the on-foot gameplay as a prioritisation call and further let the ship-based gameplay stagnate beyond the 2-years already passed during Odyssey development.

So, yeh ... interesting times ... 😃

From my lofty position...

The FPS reminds me of UT or Quake, more of a romp than 'serious', so is quite (in my opinion, naturally) fun to dive into. The other surface activities that are not directly combat related (as 'bad guys' can turn up even when scavenging) either as missions or by opportunity are sufficiently different from SRV activities to be interesting in their own right.

I still think there is plenty of scope for further development of both 'modes' of play in the future too, although wouldn't even try to guess what direction Frontier will go after Odyssey launches. The last 2 years or so the major effort has been in building Odyssey, and its 'new' engine modifications, it just remains to see, from the launch of Odyssey, if the issues in-game that currently exist have been addressed in the revised engine.

Not terrified at all. It just does not have much I want.

Remember when they tried giving away CQC for free?

I've essentially stopped playing shooters when they became serious. I loved my Unreal/Unreal Tournament, Quake 2, Serious Sam. The last shooter I played before stopping was Return to Castle Wolfenstein in 2001.
