Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road To Odyssey Part 1 - One Giant Leap

The sound of the commander breathing inside the helmet.
I question, will the pitch of the commander be one tone/pitch or would the holo-me have a voice pitch option.

As the sound design has always been top notch with Elite Dangerous. I wonder what combat will sound like, muffled, distant.
The commanders heart pounding in their ear if they run or take damage.
And if it is possible to remove the helmet on some planets with survivable surface pressures, combined with the aid of just a respirator. So we can hear the effects of sounds at different atmo pressures?

I want to hear the roar of a ship from the outside, maybe even get some minor plasma burns because i was standing too close when it took off.

Very good example actually. The same was true for me when I played Skyrim on PC when it came out. Then about 1.5 years ago I stepped into Blackreach in SkyrimVR and I can tell you that the difference completely blew my mind.

Edit: Back in the 90’s I was blown away by the graphics of the original X-Com too. It is a moving target.
Perhaps, so there are benefits to not hitting that target. To think that VR is all plus-points is naive at best.

Eventually, it's gonna' make you miss out on something.

Anyway, I am not going to discuss VR anymore in this thread, as this is not the place for your crusade.

I'll enjoy getting excited for the future given I'll experience unhindered.

Yeah, not a huge fan so far of the new art style. The new suits, helmets, jetpack, weapons, sampling tool all look more 'NMS' than Elite. I hope that's just the Gutamaya stuff. :p

They wanted the vegetation to be plausible but seem to have gone full anime with the rifles.

I'd also prefer a more "low tech look" for weapons like in Aliens 2 (okay, those were modified MP-5s and leftover MG-42s, but still  ). I'm not a huge fan of the "clean and tidy" designs in some SciFi universes. So x2 on the "I hope that's just the Gutamaya stuff", although I'd be miffed if I have to buy my Firearms from the "damn Feds" ;)

I'll bet you a fleet carrier that if DB were to say, "No VR coming to Odyssey ever!" that the VR crowd would become even more vocal (myself included)
I don't think so... this will actually happen....

I'll bet you a fleet carrier that if DB were to say, "No VR coming to Odyssey ever!" that the VR crowd would become even more vocal (myself included). The only thing that would stop every "VR please post" is if he said, "We changed our minds and are providing FULL VR support upon release." That is not going to happen, I can assure you.

I agree but a comment saying we know it is not at launch but it will be included later in the year would go a long way to help.

Greetings Commanders,

Make sure you are parked at the nearest Fleet Carrier or station and pour yourself some Lavian Brandy in your favourite Hutton Mug. It is time for the first Elite Dangerous: Odyssey dev diary - One Giant Leap!

We are more excited than the Far God Cult being scanned by a Thargoid to bring you the first devdiary on our road to Odyssey, check it out here:

The first in a series of Elite Dangerous: Odyssey dev diaries One Giant Leap explores how commanders can experience light atmospheres and break new ground with exploration on foot for the first time.

Stay tuned for future episodes set to dive-in to combat, missions, environments and co-operative play over the coming months.

Tonight, we will be streaming a Discovery Scanner episode at 18:00 (UTC) on the Elite Dangerous Official Twitch Channel, to take a deeper look into the dev diary with CEO David Braben, and Senior Designer Derin Halil.

Wait... David Braben.
Okay. I'll stay right here and stare at the screen until it happens.

Very nice. So Odyssey is just Horizons+, more of the same so far.

Looking forward to finding out more, because this seems to add nothing new. Maybe it just won't be a very expensive DLC?

The video was very well shot & produced though :)

i must say ... oh nice. it does look very nice. planets look gorgeous.
i just hope fdev build some danger into there somewhere.

ED has become the safest space travelling game ever. i actually use stations and outpost to stop the ship i ram them to slow down..... nothing even overheating really causes any problems.

even on video fdev say, the outside world is only the thinkness of your space suit away.,
i hope they allow for air leaks when suit damaged from combat or abuse., even a slow leak with a pressure timer oxygen level etc..... giving you time to return to ship or outpost for repairs.

I'm usually very salty when it comes to Elite, but out of love for the game, not just salt for the sake of saltiness.

This Dev diary has made me incredibly happy. My biggest annoyance and frustration with Elite is just the lack of communication, lack of sneak peeks, previews of upcoming content. I really hope this is a sign of change, cannot wait for more. Utterly excited about what is to come. My love for the game has once again been re-ignited.
