Elite Dangerous: Odyssey | The Road To Odyssey Part 1 - One Giant Leap

I have a feeling that any in ship moving about would be done in the presence of a gravity well anyway (i.e. you are docked) because you have to design for both gravity and zero gravity- and the cockpits we see seem to only make sense in a gravity well (lots of hard surfaces, pointy bits etc).

So with that in mind, it might be when you are landed / docked you get up from your chair, move to the door behind you, it fades to black and then its you on the lift down to the surface. So its interiors in a way but cutting out walking past the toilets and galley.

Yes I get that, but since the Kickstarter David Braben has said he wants EVAs, space legs, walking around ships etc. He must know what the game engine is capable of.

You think - at his level - he has an intimate knowledge of the game`s design, to the point where he fully understands how the existing design enables (and also constrains) what features may be implemented in the future?

Interesting.

The fora are littered with armchair developers proclaiming - as fact - how things are or should be and their relative difficulty to implement. There's nothing wrong with speculation, it's what these threads are for in part, but stating something as absolute fact when you haven't got a clue is unhelpful to the discussion.
My post wasn't aimed at you. I try not to speculate but use FD and DB quotes/videos/interviews.

And he also said he wants atmospheric planets and walking around them.

For this expansion, we have the beginning of Elite Feet and atmospheric planets. The next expansion may include more elite feet additions and more types of atmospheric planets.

Whats even funnier is... Apparently all the ships have had interiors layed out and designed since Elite was first launched... You would think that it would then be much easier to implement and probably be the first port of testing walking around inside these interiors before setting down landing gear on a barren planet with hundreds of thousands of kilometres of different terrain while testing hit box's and character responses to walls, stairs, steep climbs, bumps etc etc.... Or was the "We have the ship interiors done for every ship done" a lie from the start. I mean ship interior walking should have been the launch point of this....It will create the best immersion effect for first landing and walking...but now we are going to just get teleported to the top of the stairs and roll down them like the srv...

Hoping for VR, it the best game ever for that experience.

That's not what was said. The said ships have been design with interiors in mind. They hadn't designed all the interiors.

Because people who engage in PR and interviews are always straightforward, truthful, and never distort or massage the truth.
If I use a quote or a link to a video or interview, it is to use FD/DB's own words. Maybe for them, maybe against them. I am not going to call them liars when the game isn't even completed yet. I'll leave that for others.

Its pretty straightforward to look back at what's already happened to get some context here. Some of Braben's public statements on how Elite will evolve and how the gameplay will work have unfortunately turned out to be false, right? I mean, the whole mining quote from Braben has become the stuff of parody now....and I`m sure he meant it at the time with the best of intentions, but things didn't work out that way, did they.

And to be completely fair, in a lot of cases, this kind of stuff is rather understandable. Lots and lots of creators have huge ambitions for their game, and when the reality of the design and the reality of managing the business starts to hit, sometimes compromises have to be made. And maybe sometimes they are not quite as good as they hoped to be in the execution...thats life. This stuff is really, really hard.

Ah, you thought my post was aimed at you despite me not using a quote of yours or mentioning your name.

Unrelated, you should check out the greatest hits of Carly Simon, she’s done at least one you’d like.
The thing is..... The song WAS about him.... Which is something even as a kid I never got, she was proving "his" point by singing the song ;)

A decent tune but it was no "Nobody does it better"

Edit damn and now it's in my head looks like I need to log into Spotify and get it out of my system ;)

I've posted somewhere on the forums about FD spinning too many plates now. I don't know how many employees they have, or who is working on what, but after 6 years since
release I hoped it would be further along than it is.

That was during kickstarter, further in they stated at a few points that most of the original ships had their interiors pretty much designed but had no point adding them due to the current lack of being able to see them.

Also even if the first was still the thing wouldnt it make more sense to start there with walking regardless as it would remove alot of future bug issues with clipping etc before going onto planet surfaces etc and really flesh out the design as if your characters are fleshed out for the small spaces and other things mentioned the wider planetary ones would just need quick fixes already pretty much done.

I cant imagine teleporting to land then later down the line see the transition... It makes more sense from a design perspective and also for advertising purposes for their own gain to have that initial drop onto the boots more WOW.....

Frontier have nearly 500 employees and counting yet most are working on their newer titles, y9u can see all their details in their annual reports and let me say from 2017 onwards the whole defence of "funding" i hear so much is pretty much void, their revenue oncreased by over 600% in 2019 alone, they habe the money, they have the manpower.... Its drive and listening to the people they need to focus on
