Elite Dangerous | Powerplay 2.0 exploration and trade balance changes

Greetings Commanders,

Following a review of the use of exploration data and trading on Powerplay 2.0 we will be making the following changes:
  • We will be temporarily disabling the merit and system score gains for Exploration and Genetic Samples data for Powerplay 2.0
  • You can continue to explore, gather and sell data but it will not count towards Powerplay 2.0
  • We have a deployed a fix to balance Powerplay 2.0 trading - Trades will no longer result in excessive merit generation. We will continue to monitor and adjust as needed.
  • We will be adjusting the Powerplay 2.0 ranks of Commanders who have excessively benefited from trading and exploration data
  • Once our review is complete we will announce when exploration data will be eligible to count towards Powerplay 2.0
We thank you for your patience.

Please, with trading, take into consideration "rare commodities" too and the score with other activities. I'm scoring 2500 with the Mandalay in 3-4 jumps, and others more with carriers. At same time, I scored 40 killing one ship, and 30 changing a banner in a outpost. In consequence, everybody is doing rare commodities. This is the same situation than passengers, bug on minery, etc. and all situations when one activity generates an insane number of credits or something similar.

People is not playing poweplay 2.0, people is "buying rare commodities".

I find it ironic that the humans are giving credit for infighting but ignoring that there is still one Thargoid mothership sitting there.
No bonus merits for combating the Thargoid threat? One would think attacking the enemy of all mankind would make the Powers look good politically.

The Open Only topic has been beaten to death, resurrected and then beaten to death again. The only people that stand to lose anything from open only exploration are those that stream and risk stream snipers. Anybody else will be able to sneak into a station just fine.

With the addition of Fleet Carriers its not as though you need to return to the bubble to hand in your exploration data any more. No real need to sneak into anywhere. I mean, if we are only talking about handing in exploration data in general, not in a PP context.

However, there are people (and there have even been gloating posts) of griefers camping places like Sag A* killing explorers in open, so i disagree with your assertion that only streamers stand to lose from open only.

For what I understand Toady did the 'beta testing' on the preview server and when he did the same thing on Live essentially it was found that the mitigation wasn't enough.

Although FDEV have upped their game - wouldn't it have been better to test this themselves after the 'beta testing', especially as they must have had a clone of Toad's data?

Expecting Fdev to have a 9am meeting on Monday.

Wish you well FDEV, just don't return to your previous ways is all I ask.

Doing further testing with balancing could have delayed Ascendancy another month.

I wish Frontier well on Monday as they try and work on a suitable solution.

Is there any benefit to Powerplay for doing on foot conflict zones? I would love to fight in on foot wars to gain merits..

I was just thinking, Frontier probably wanted to do away with the old PP 1.0 system of holding onto a quadrillion merits then doing a snipe. They overlooked that explo data/exobio data could do just that, dropping an incredible ammount of merits 5 minutes before the cycle ends is quite valuable, and probably not intended
Yeah, ideally if they wanted to make it "actions you do now are the ones that count" and prevent tactical merit-hoarding over multiple cycles, they could tag the exploration data with the date when you pick it up and make it lose effectiveness over time or something, like half the merit value each week or something.

My PTSD has returned :D

However I think this is fair- you still get the flat credit reward just the data is less rewarded merit wise.

i honestly think exploration data should be buffed. i pledged to pranav Antal because i wanted to be an explorer. and when i started turning in data i was really dissapointed. 100 merits an hour is pathetic. when i turned in all my data and biological data i got 98 for cartography and 98 biology. for like.... a 3 hour exbidition? (i was testing the rates)

idk i just find it demoralizing that i can spend 3 hours out exploring. and not even get enough to get to the second rank. when you can trade rare goods and get like 6k in 15 minutes when thats not even part of your powers ethos.

As far as I was aware, merits are not being provided for exploration data at present; as per the first post of this thread.

After i finally finsihed the initial weekly assignments, i stopped getting any merits whatsoever for turning in bounties. I even was turning them into the power contact and not the administrator. Killed over a dozen pirates after my weekly assignment was finished, 0 merits for the turn-ins. I did get maybe 8 to 10 million credits however. No merits.

i think a better way to implement this change would be to make exploration data diminish by certain percentages by the amount of time it is held on. lets say someone does a five day exbedition and turns it all in the day before everything resets. in five days you can get alot, but not an INSANE amount that makes it to where you can completely overthrow a system.

so for every time a powerplay cycle goes on, the data gets less valuable in merits that is. im not sure how they would impliment this. but there are third party apps that can tell you how long ago you scanned a planet.

Merits for bounty hunting are supposed to be awarded when you're awarded the bounty voucher, not when you hand them in, according to the Activities list in the Pilot's Handbook Powerplay section. You have to do the hunting in Acquisition systems (uncontrolled systems in range of your Power's fortified or stronghold system) or Reinforcement systems (a system controlled by your power, but not the Power capital) I think.

Re the vouchers, this is correct. Bounty hunting definitely works like this in fortified systems

I don't think it makes sense to age the data like that. Better to make the rate of return decrease. For example, if you get 1000 merits for your first 10million in a cycle, you get 500 for the next 10 million and so on so there's no point to bomb since the bomb becomes exponentially less effective. Diminishing returns and exponential decay are common in MMOs for a reason
