Elite Dangerous | Powerplay 2.0 Questions and Answers

I'm so disappointed with the decision about Open Only. Every month I check the news hoping to see the Open Only decision being taken. I would come back to play on the same day. Playing PP in Solo servers is cheating. It would be in every MMO in history. Imagine playing an online game with other people doing something together and some guy that can't be found like a ghost is playing and changing things around you and you can't even see him. The problem is not open only or not open only. It should be open only, it's the most reasonable thing. The problem is the lack of mechanisms to protect people against gankers and the things that make Open Only risky.

It feels like you are the child of a parent who takes questionable decisions to favor the spoiled child who is your brother/sister because if he doesn't do that then the spoiled child will annoy everyone. Like, always ordering cheese pizza when you can choose a marguerita or four cheese pizza or mignon filet with wine because the spoiled child only likes cheese pizza so everyone MUST eat cheese pizza.
It is not cheating ... and that is a facilie analogy

And that’s the true question here: is Frontier willing to spend any payroll dealing with these kinds of issues. Given Frontier’s history to date, I’d say that the answer is a firm “No.”
Definitely. It's either going to be:
- this doesn't work (or at least, is inefficient compared with intended options) because of [some balancing factor]
- this does work (and maybe at some point Frontier will patch or rebalance that after the "how to win Powerplay" guides come out)

Checking individual behaviour would certainly be possible but a complete waste of time even if they had the people to spare to do it.

I think it breaks down into two groups: the 5C stuff (which is pure mechanical exploitation) which FD seem to have ironed out- and then Open based issues which can also be ironed out if FD wish it.

For example- the commander alt farming. The easiest way is use the commanders weekly rank within the power (which is a thing- used for the Top 10 but also you can see this value when a ship is targeted) and link it to kill 'value'.

An alt will (unless pumped up by playing- thus defeating the exploit since all work counts) be low value and with an S curve like weight be worth much, much less than someone just playing. Its going to be a massive slog for the exploiter to fly out, destroy, fly out, destroy etc when its value is incredibly low.

We do assume that there is an INF value attached to this as well. If there is no intrinsic value in the kill then it comes down to what the player was doing that was stopped. It might be that all kills are personal rewards that only advance us up the ladder- so its gaming the system but not the strategic layer itself.

And FD might also see continual destruction and go- eh? Even easier might be that the same S curve has diminished returns at the top to prevent infinite returns. This would mirror the BGS where after a set amount of kills you max out your influence for that tick in that system.

It crossed my mind that one commander repeatedly killing another one while farming for PP could be classed as cyber bullying if done to excess.

This happened to me once in a mobile RPG game. My assailant ambushed then killed me in short order, and when I resurrected on the spot he killed me again.

At that point, I settled down to read a very good book for a while. He soon got bored and left, low marshmallow eq I'm afraid :D

Except in these cases they spawn (or can spawn) away- potentially randomly (from the POV of the attacker). I also think that FD could use clever instancing and that after a threshold you are de-instanced with that other player for a set time- say, 30 minutes.

Yes but I was thinking of the farmer and his Alt and what fun it would be if someone got banned for bullying themselves.

Did the same once in GTA online.

Kept saying things in chat like "How about bazooka next?" or "Now try running me over with a car" or "Mmm.. this cognac is tasty. Still enjoying yourself?'

After a while they just go bored of hitting a static target who clearly wasn't getting upset and moved on.

Some ED partner streamers got early access to Powerplay 2 and the Mandalay on the test server.
  1. The introduction text when you open PP should have audio.
  2. I didn't see new artwork for the old Powers.
That's disappointing.

Gonna also put this here: why wasn't this new -100% rebuy mechanic used as the Open Only incentive so many wished for.....?
Seems like another wasted opportunity - at least to test it - because once it goes live for PG/Solo as well, they will never be able to take it away.
Other than some really challenging technical impediment (making a ruleset apply only to one mode), I really don't see why...
