Point of an AFK build is to do it while your AFK, get yourself a Corvette to actually blast around in while not AFK. Merit farming is more of a grind and less of a gameplay, people work in real life. Why should they "work" in a video game? lol
Because some of us like to earn it?

Tbh I don't see a bad outcome currently. PP isn't about ranking up anyway, it's about fighting over systems. I don't mind if casual players get rank 100 within a month. It only levels the playing field and seems less silly than the Power-hopping some people did in the past.

The longer I've had my Corvette, the less I've liked to fly it. I still bring it out once in a while, but the hardpoint sizes being stretched to the extreme ends (2s1 and 2s4) and weaker in the middle (2s2 and 1s3)make loadouts less versatile/variable than the other three big baddies. And the maneuverability is nice in battle, but it's low speed is unsatisfying for flying around. Plus it's a single purpose vessel. The Cutter is where the fun is at. I have three of those for different purposes and have used them all in the past week. Too bad about the whole imperial slavery thing...

If this was using a bug or cheat then maybe I'd agree, shouldn't be done. But AFK Farming isn't a crime by any means, you still have to worry about lag, desync, being killed ect ect... Rare Selling wasn't a bug either unsure why it's still turned off (Unless there's been a change recently).

Last announcement I saw, rares still aren't back on. Escape pods are.

I have more fun doing trade in my Cutter, Corvette has a great build to it. Assuming you built it properly, it can stay on point way more the size 1's are more for effects, size 2's and s3 is more for lasers with vent and the 2 huge's for multi-cannons it's quite awesome. Got everything for Combat: https://s.orbis.zone/qEzp

That's pretty close to my loadout, and every effective Corvette loadout. Beams and multicannons, gimballed. BEGIN RANT The ham and cheese sandwich of ED combat. She's a one trick pony. Want to use PAs? There are no more than 2 hardpoints of any size for matching velocities. Using the huge points for PAs drains the capacitor and knocks the ship out of the fight (tried it). The huge points have to be beams or multicannons (or throw away damage potential and load large weapons on them). Using the two medium or two small for PAs is miserable damage output for a ship that large. There's just no good way to punish a target with fixed weapons One could put rails on all four sm/med points, but then there will be heat issues. The Cutter allows 2 large PAs or 4 medium. 3 large for the Anaconda. 4 large or 3 medium for the T10. Frag cannon fans might load out a Corvette differently, but it can only mount one pacifier, vs 2, 3, or 4 for the others, and it doesn't have much speed for chasing prey down within frag cannon range. (I'm talking out of my posterior here, I've never had luck with frags and haven't tried to get gud with them). Don't get me wrong, I don't hate the ship. I don't hate ham and cheese, either. I just think the Cutter is more fun. END RANT

Granted, my trade cutter and my mining cutter are also just armed with gimballed beams and multicannons (and/or shock cannons), because a ham and cheese sandwich is always an acceptable meal. And I do enjoy taking my Corvette into hazres and CZ signals. Maybe I will try a 4-rail build...

You can mine with a Corvette and do Combat with it, https://s.orbis.zone/qEzT I once had this on my Corvette but decided to just go over to the Type-9 instead.

Note: Once you make a build it becomes niche, so if you make a trading Cutter, it's best to make a secondary Cutter for Mining. Instead of swapping modules. So anything really can be niche.

What is everyone doing for merits while rares are disabled? I tried mining. Slow and unpredictable. Any suggestions?
Nearly everything is paying a lot of merits now.
Weekly assignments 15k total (approx.)
A single NPC in power CZs pays 250 to 600 merits (depending on rank only), yesterday I made 26k in about 80 minutes, very casually in a 5PA FDL (which means I had to rearm at least 3 times iirc)
Deep core mining (e.g. monazite) about 25k per hour
Regular trading can pay a lot too if you can find some profitable commodity.
I guess there are more profitable ways too, but you don't really need to do some meta grinding, since nearly everything will yield 10 to 20k per hour easily.

Ive not done any combat in PP2, are these different from normal CZs? How do you tell them apart?
Not asking for a friend im actually scratching my head :p

Normal CZs are conflict between minor factions.
Power CZs are conflict between powers (ships are aligned to powers instead of MFs).

From what I observed about PCZs:
  1. The go on for longer than CZs (about 45 minutes solo)
  2. Only medium PCZs exists
  3. You don't get bonus merits for completing one

Thanks for this, are they found in certain systems? I mainly reinforce at the moment.
