Elite Dangerous | Powerplay 2.0 Update

Greetings Commanders,

We have identified an issue where certain actions are being excessively used for Powerplay gains.

In order to investigate and resolve this issue we are temporarily suspending Powerplay gains via the following methods:
  • Rare Goods Trading
  • Settlement Data Delivery
  • Escape Pods
Once we have resolved this issue these options will be enabled again.

Thank you for your continued reports and feedback on Powerplay 2.0.
how long do we have to refund ships purchased in the store?

To be fair even fetching one load of rare goods without hoarding in carriers makes you more merits per time than most other activities, so there has to be a rebalance .. maybe bit of a nerf but there are things which really need buffs (e.g. who carries power commodities if they only give 1~1.5 merits per ton and you only get a tiny chunk of them every 30 minutes).

When I heard about a PP revamp, I really hoped for power contacts handing out a continous stream of tasks through the mission board (not that tiny weekly assignments) ... I still think it is a miss on a huge opportunity to include CMDRs who enjoy earning things organically and still making notable progress on PP operations/targets. With oll these excessive farming methods you currently only can counter them with the same farming method ... that renders all activities useless except that handful of grinds ... only nerfing those methods will bring the whole thing to a halt or at least a collapse back to a few hard core groups who enjoy virtual politics.

par for the course with FDev

Instead of nerfing things, why don't Fdev look at boosting everything else to match it? It's seriously disheartening to think that Fdev will nerf any meta to the ground, when the current loyalty path is looking to be a 1-200 hour grind. Nerfs hurt the community, boosting things to eliminate a meta are much healthier to the community. I feel sorry for anyone who only has a couple of hours per week to play Elite but want some of the modules, they're really going to be affected the most.

As for the affected loops, the settlement exploit should be fixed, but if rares get nerfed then there's a serious problem.

Nerfing is not the right solution, we're just heading back to PP1 gameplay loops, but with hundreds of hours of unneeded grind tacked on. I was interested in being more heavily involved with my power this time around, but that's completely gone if Fdev are just going to play whack-a-mole with stuff that doesn't need to be touched.

what's left? slf stronghold vs bounty hunting?
Power Play 2.0 is already 3 weeks old and to this day remains a bug riddled mess that so far has had...

1. Exploration data for merits suspended.
2. Exobiology data for merits suspended.
3. Rares trading for merits suspended.
4. And will most likely soon have the kill spamming of SLF's at opposition Stronghold ships suspended.

Yet no bug fixes or patches have been seen so far, not really a good look. Unfortunately PP2.0 is also ruining the game play of players that are not even remotely interested in playing it.
I'm actually very surprised stronghold carrier signals weren't just suspended because of that.
With what's left of contribution, looks like until then slf strongholds are gonna get hammered to oblivion while the reinforcement metrics to counter it are simply below it.
Not to even mention the slf won't give you the same bounty issues popping other ships or actions against the stronghold carrier would.

Fortunately, it isn't bothering me in the least, I'm able to play how I want, and am not in the least even remotely interested in playing it!
I guess it all depends on how one wished to play the game though...
And for many that have never played PP2.0 nor even wish too, the overly long logins to the game, hyperspace jumps that take unusually long time and sometimes end in a crash, sudden "coloured snake" crashes, limpets that forget how to do their jobs, Carrier jumps that crash to desktop and myriad of other bugs since the release of Ascendancy are breaking the game for them.

I have been trading rares this week. Not for my rank, but because alone, it's the only way I found that was viable to acquire a system on my own.

The rewards for every different task should be balanced, not nerthed.

How to move forward ? I have over 40 systems I would like to get under a Power. Acquiring 1 system would take me alone 1 week, so 40 weeks. + How much more weeks to move from Exploited to Fortified or Stronghold.

I would understand and agree with less ranking reward, but please, not less activity reward in systems. Not sure I will spend 2 or 3 years just doing PP and nothing else.

Finally! You just need to check the leaderboards of some powers that have merit bonuses for rare goods trading and settlement data deliveries.

And please, try to maintain a good balance of all merit sources. Some powers, like Li Yong Rui and Archon Delaine, are gaining massive amounts of merits from trading rares — just look at their leaderboards from previous cycles, it's insane. Meanwhile, Pranav Antal's 'bonuses' for exploration and exobiology data are currently nerfed to the bare minimum, making competition between powers extremely unbalanced and flawed. You could try to boost other merit sources to match the current meta.

I understand the idea that each power should have a boost in a certain playstyle aligned with their ethos and lore, for example, trading for LYR (that's why they would have bonus in rare goods trading). However, in practice, the imbalance in merits gained from each activity — which also makes some of them the meta and other useless and non-competitive — has led to a very unfair competition.
Some powers don’t have any activity that could be considered meta for merit gaining. In my opinion, there should not be any kind of meta for merit gaining, allowing players to support their power in the way they prefer.

You've been getting so much right lately, you've been listening, responding promptly. I really felt like you were paying attention and making an effort with the game I love. But this is ridiculous.

I have zero interest in interacting with Powerplay 2.0 just for Powerplay itself. I don't need to see my name at the top of a scoreboard, I don't care if LYR takes over the galaxy. I'm only interested in what I can get out of it; access to the modules. For those who are interested, great, I'm glad for you, genuinely, and I hope they eventually make the gameplay what you all want. But the way this has been handled so far feels like a huge step backwards from your recent actions, somehow managing to both knee-jerk react and do nothing all at once. Maybe it's just my lack of interest in this part of the game influencing my patience, but I think I'm honestly done with Powerplay 2.0, regardless if you fix it or not. I sincerely hope I'm in the minority because otherwise, this feels like a huge waste of time for players and dev's alike. I just don't see what I can get out of it that I can't get doing mostly the same things elsewhere in the game for different rewards (credits vs powerplay modules). At least in other parts of the game, the goal posts for those rewards don't constantly move or dissapear. Maybe I'll eventually unlock those modules over time, but I'll no longer be making an effort to only do activities that will effect the power I'm pledged to.

I didn't buy the Python MkII for Arx, because I'm a firm believer in voting with my wallet. I did however buy a Shipkit for it when it was made available for credits because things in game, the game itself and FDEV improved dramatically IMO and this is despite all the negativity at the time about "pay to win". I voted with my wallet. I also bought the Type 8 and a Kit and a Paint job (I think that was in response to the engineering changes). I bought the Mandalay Stellar, and a paint job as well because things were going so well; as great as that ship is, I wouldn't have done if FDEV and in game "stuff" wasn't IMO "good". As it stands, I won't be buying the Cobra Mk5 for arx because this whole situation has been handled so badly from my perspective and especially in comparison with the last few months. To be clear here, I won't buy the Cobra Mk5 not because I don't like Powerplay 2.0, nor because the "issues" with it are in many cases obvious even to me* and shouldn't have made it past the testing phase, but entirely to do with how this is being addressed by FDEV.

Please, don't make this kind of mistake with Colonisation. If there is a 5th ship in the works, I'd like to buy it and show my appreciation for a new feature and a continued job well done.

*me being your average gaming idiot.

I think we need some clear communication as to what the expected level of merit/hr is from the devs perspective. if we have a guide rope we can give better feedback as to which avenues are under or overperforming :)
I respectfully disagree. The devs' opinion is irrelevant. Excluding obvious exploits, every player should be free to choose their own path to accomplish their own goals. "Blaze your own path as long as I approve" was never signed upon.

How about you focus on fixing the connection issues when jumping systems before you nerf the FUN stuff you just added into the game. IDK if you can tell or not but players were actually having a pretty good time doing these activities. You really don't need to make every new thing you add to the game an impossibly long grind fest. You just end up turning players off of the whole thing; and for what? Keeping your Player Engagement numbers up to show the shareholders? Pffftttt... If you let the players have their fun... they will fund your game!

I was about to raise my own concern for 4.
Maybe most devs moved to PC 2 to build the incoming 2nd hotfix and December's patch?

I get your point, however my question was about merit/hr for any/all activities. Dont't wanna force anyone to do x activity to also participate in powerplay. i wont do it if it's combat only to gain sensible ranking for example. If fdev sees the situation as say an average gamer with job, partner, kids etc gets only a few hours a week to play, and fdev see that 100 mertis/hr (number pulled from that place of mine where the sun doesn;t shine) target then there's an obvious issue that deeper than exploits. As it's likely a much more reasonable target they have from designing this thing, if we know the ballpark then the results of emergent gameplay can be discussed in a reasonable manner.

While you're looking to adjust merit earnings by rares, data delivery, and escape pods, could you also take a similar approach to merits earned at stronghold carriers blowing up the numerous SLF fighters that get launched when you start UMing it? As things stand, each SLF is worth a whopping 78 merits per kill, meaning someone armed with all seekers or pack hounds can make thousands of merits in the span of 10 minutes, and totally mess up a power's hold on a system quickly.

Here's a video by the Multiverse Trade Union illustrating the unbalanced nature of SLF merit farming:

Thanks!
