That isn't consistent nor accuarate data. If they had no underyling system to collate the data, how do they know the average bounties killed in a week? Or megaships scanned? Or settlements restored/looted/raided? Being able to do those things in game is not the same as FDev being able to collect that data to test apporpiate merits against.
That isn't an excuse for FDev. They should have alpha tested deeper, then setup a beta test with a reasonable cross-section of players to determine where time is spent.
I'm sorry, but if a developer doesn't really know what players do, after 10 years of the game being live, particularly after multiple instances of similar things being done, there is no real excuse.
They know. The rank levels and merit amounts are not an accident. They are that high for a reason. This is the developer being upset at the
speed of progress, nothing more.
Frontier communicating they were aware of the data point exploit and disabling that stream was all that was required.
Bringing combat and undermining activities
up to the level of rares to balance would also have been very constructive and in line with a lot of feedback I have seen.
Instead we get unhelpful messaging over "excessive" engagement.
