Fiction Elite Dangerous : Premonition

Just to advise, FDev have invited me along to the Expo, so I'll be there. :) Not sure if I'm doing anything particular, but look forward to meeting you there if you're going!

Cheers,

Drew.

I'll be in the queue to say hello :)

Hey Drew ... not sure if you are monitoring this thread but a quick question if you don't mind.

Regarding "The Dark Wheel" and the treatment given to that group in Premonition. Luko hints that The Dark Wheel faction at Shinrarta Dhezra isn't related to The Dark Wheel organization introduced in Holdstock's Novella and famed for the search for Raxxla. If this is the case then that brings up a lot of questions regarding some of the old missions that had been given out regarding The Dark Wheel (Obfuscated In The Outer Rim, SAP 8 Core Containers, Dark Wheel Seeks Diplomats For Discreet Delivery, etc.)

Should we be reevaluating these missions given Luko's revelation? A lot of us assumed that these missions might have something to do with Raxxla ... but if the in-game Dark Wheel is not connected to Raxxla then does that mean we should disregard them as potential hints?

Yes, Drew, this is an important point IMHO.

78% done, about to start Chapter 24.

Drew, you're an evil genius! So many things come together now! Can't stop reading :)

So can you explain why in the books conventional weaponry seems to be able to harm and destroy the Thargoid ships, yet in game lore our weapons are completely ineffectual, requiring 'new modules' as explained by the promo materials for 2.4 and by Ed on the live stream?

Seems like a gaping plot hole to me...

Sorry if this question has been asked: Will this be published in paperback as was the previous book Reclamation?

Finished! What a read! A few words from me... I'll start by saying that overall, I liked "Reclamation" better. However! Despite a few holes in the plot (two main ones for me are: why all of them went to steal mats meta alloys, where clearly Hassan and Luko were enough to do the job? How come Luko's lasers and multi cannons were able to destroy a Thargoid ship?) - it was an excellent read and the plot, the story and intrigue were amazing! "Three Musketeers" come to mind adventure wise and "Song of Fire and Ice" politic shenanigans wise. How it all came together at the end, the way Drew's storyline was tied into FDEV's, all the in game events and the mystery, assets created by the devs... Wow. Chapeau bas, both Drew and Frontier!

The only bits I disliked were some of the player related fragments, as some of them really felt like bolted on just for the sake of including the relevant players in the book. Whenever they said "Guys!" it just felt a bit artificial. Even Salome said it once and it really didn't feel like her at all.

Overall it's an amazing book though and it's definitely a MUST-READ for anyone who was following the story in Elite.

It also shows how much of a total sandbox Elite is and how flexible it can be when it comes to content created by the community.

Great work Drew, great work FDEV and great work everyone involved!

That does bug me and hope drew could explain that.

are you sure it's conventional weapons/ammo? ;) Remember, that ship's been around a long time...

IIRC, the description of the encounter and how the weapons were operated and fired did not indicate anything special about them. Plain lasers and MC's, or that was my understanding at least.

Saying that, Luko was member of DW if I understood correctly, so maybe he's had access to some super duper, special weaponry only masked as standard ones.

Just FYI everyone. I approved the physical proofs for Elite Dangerous : Premonition on Friday. Shouldn't be too long before 'real' books are available. :)

Cheers,

Drew.
Looking forward to it! Still reading Reclamation as a Elite newbie, enjoying it very much so far.

Reading Premonition on my Kindle I've noticed a weird thing.
Sometimes (let say 5 times in total over entire book ) when I get to new page it ends on a specific paragraph, and the rest of the page is empty. I jump to next page, feels like something is missing, then I go back and the previous page is full this time.
Attached link, when I first got here it ended with "heavily involved". https://goo.gl/photos/ZzxdJtTNjGBfb4xu6

I cannot reproduce the fault, even if I go back to Home, open different book, then go back to Premonition it is displayed correctly.
Never noticed it before, but it may be my Kindle being few years old. Anyone heard about Kindle bug like this?
It never ends mid-text, always at the end of paragraph so initially it does not look very suspicious :)

I noticed this whilst reading premonition too. I assumed it was the way the kindle is handling whitespace and breaks differently when going back a page, because when re-reading, I didn't see anything I had missed.

EDIT: after looking at your picture, what I was experiencing was different.

Finished it a few days ago, terrific stuff! Well done Drew, you did a brilliant job of weaving actual in-game events and characters into a really gripping and consistent end-to-end read. No mean feat I dare say!

So the Besieger stuff. There's something I don't quite get (maybe a continuity error, maybe me being dumb and missing something vital).

I really like the moment when ..

No really ... it's a plot spoiler!

.. Erimus approves the use of bounty hunters (such as Besieger) to create confusion and chaos. I like that it's a difficult decision for him and I like that it acknowledges what actually happened in-game with HP being allowed to join the Allied Coalition (even if only in some limited capacity). Also brave of Erimus (the actual player I mean) to agree to be cast in that role (I assume he was given final say on the decision? his character actually comes out pretty well from it all in the end I think).

Anyway, what I don't get is that later on it appears to play out that Besieger is acting in the employ of The Club (or whatever they were called). That seemed a shame to me. We all know that HP is a bit of a wildcard and pretty much a law unto himself so the idea that he was working for the Club just doesn't ring true plus it weakens the significance of Erimus' decision.

I bet I've missed something massive and am about to be set straight! LOL

A quick update. I'm expecting news on paperbacks and Amazon versions before too long (hopefully before Expo!).

I will also be at Fantasticon in Hull this weekend. As part of that, Amelia Tyler and Jay Britton (the voices from the Zurara) will be joining me to stage a scene from Elite Dangerous Premonition involving Salomé, Patreus and some swords. Should be fun. :)

Cheers,

Drew.

Here's the video of Amelia Tyler and Jay Britton (voice actors from the Zurara logs) acting out Chapter 10 of Elite Dangerous Premonition. Salomé meets Patreus. :)
