Elite: Dangerous Slang Dictionary and creator.

Hi,

I'd like you to add "Kevin" to the terms. As in "found a kevin"
you think you've spied an earthlike but when you get there it's a water world - or kevin costner. :D

Mudflap: Synonymous with "Hood Ornament". A squished Sidewinder or similar key-fob charm of a ship. "Took my Asp out of Lave at full burn - picked up a full set of four Mudflaps on the way out. Har har har". *swigs beer, belches*

I'm going more for slang that player's use rather than in-universe slang.
But I picked stuff I think people in-universe might also use.

High-wake (v):
To hyperspace jump, particularly out of a combat situation. "I was about to nail him but he high-waked".

Honk (v): To activate a discovery scanner. "Jump. Honk. Jump. Honk."

Low-wake (v): To enter supercruise, particularly out of a combat situation.

Khaleesi: Princess Aisling Duval. A reference to her resemblance to a character from an old Earth TV series.

Mail Slot (n): The entrance to a space station.

Meagle (n): A missile-armed Eagle. Not seen these days due a sudden galactic-wide failure of QC of missiles.

Pod (n): A wing of Orcas.

Surprisewinder (n): A highly-upgraded Sidewinder. Surprising because no one normally bothers to upgrade Sidewinders.

Beamer (n): Term for a ship carrying multiple Beam weapons as its primary armament.

Beam/s (v):
Shorthand for Beam Cannons. "The Anaconda sprayed Beams at me"

Dance (v):
Term for a 1v1 Dogfight/Combat with high maneuvering

Furball (v): Term for a large scale, intense battle involving multiple high maneuver participants usually within a very small area. "I'm stuck in a real furball here, one sec."

Hi-Res (n): Shorthand for High Intensity Resource Extraction Site

KayWiz (n): Kill Warrant Scanner, based off the slang for a CIWS (Close-in Weapon Support, SeaWiz). "I fired up the KayWiz to check the Bounty."

Low-Res (n): Shorthand for Low Intensity Resource Extraction Site

Pulsers (n): Shorthand for Pulse Lasers. "I powered up my Pulsers and raked his shields for a bit"

Sec (v): A Random unit of time usually longer than a single Earth-standard Second lasting anywhere up to "A While"

Tag (v): Firing a couple of shots into an enemy being attacked by a Wingman in order to share the bounty. Usually used to let wingmen know when its safe for them to destroy a target. "Target Tagged."

Agree with other posters: Honk should be included. Onomatopoeic, from the sound of a completed discovery scan.

And Wires. Rather simpler name for the toast rack/cattle grid. "Wait there. I'm comin' through the wires right now."

ICARUS: from old Earth history, a ship that heats up and gets damaged rapidly, while being close to a sun. "The FDL surely is an Icarus, wings of paper and wax melting at the faintest sunlight."

BUMBLEBEE, doing a: the act of flying erratic maneuvers and changing vectors rapidly. "I managed to interdict that sweet courier yesterday, but he kept doing a bumblebee, buzzing around."

COW CHAFF, to: the art of blinding a hostile ship, by boosting past it and releasing tons of biowaste as distraction.

High Wake, to: The act of escaping combat or travelling to another system to avoid being mass locked.

Low Wake, to: To leave an area of space and enter Supercruise.

Woot, I'm back and will edit this as the thought occurs.

Remember it doesn't have to be actual slang used in the game, have some fun and create some. Who knows? Yours is the one that may get picked up.

Arctangent: The time to arrival calculated by the ship's nav computer. It will often appear to freeze for a while as the distance/velocity ratio matches on the last leg of a supercruise journey. "Getting close to the station, I better set to a 7-second arctangent to keep from overshooting!"

Sweet Spot: A ship's velocity of best maneuverability. While in supercruise, this velocity decreases with nearby gravity wells. Being in the Sweet Spot (usually) prevents overshoot of the destination in supercruise.

Who comes up with this stuff? A few of these made me laugh...

Stoppie: The action performed when entering the letterbox without Docking Permission and the 30 second warning appears. Usually accompanied by screams of "AARGHHH! NO! NO!" and a silent prayer that there are no larger craft behind you. You could end up being Toast.

Been there, done that.

I've also been known for some of my broadcast poetry, such as:

"Past the rack, and through the slot,
"Look out station, I'm coming in hot!"

Which may be directly related to:

Hotslotting: Speeding through The Slot.

Though I'll also offer said poetic warning if I'm dragging along one or more pirates who failed to interdict me outside.

I still hope to see:

Riding the Steely Dan: To be rammed by an Orca.

make it into the lexicon some day.

Nice to see life in this old dog.

Thanks, also, for saving me from looking for it because of a new story I am writing.

PHOUND, to: the act of spamming a target with packhound missiles. "I was phounded by a FGS yesterday, didn't see the escape vector, as the explosives went off."

O

OSOD: Orange Ship of Death

We all know it ;)

If you didn't know it before, you do now.

---
Belugaed: The very sudden appearance of an NPC-operated Beluga when either entering or exiting a station, directly in your flight path, with little or no opportunity to avoid a collision. "Watch out Hotslotting, or you may very well wind up belugaed." - It happens.

Champagne: Stuck in the mailslot, requires one or more boosts to get unstuck, can result in being Spiked "Careful with the Type-9, it's easy to Champagne the thing." - derived from the cork in a champagne bottle. They're in there tight, but when they are loosed, look out.

Cleaning the Window: Flying inverted, at extremely low altitude, though a geyser. "So, you say your an ace pilot? Have you tried cleaning the window?".

Decorating the Living Room: Half way through an extremely long journey without a discovery scanner. Can also be said of performing any tedious task in which too much time has already been invested to abandon the venture. "I'd love to go bounty hunting, but I'm Decorating the Living Room right now."

Dingleberry: A puck with an Elite pilot that is extremely difficult to get out from behind you. "Somebody get this Dingleberry off of me before it actually does any damage." - Heard among wings of bounty hunters, often in HAZ RES. Origins best left unmentioned.

Double-Decker: Two ships trying to squeeze through the same section of the mail slot at the same time. "Watch out in busy stations you don't wind up in a Double-decker." - Believed to come from the legendary pubic transportation system of London.

Feirging: Interdicting a known griefer with a small, extremely fast ship, such as an Imperial Eagle fitted with Enhanced Thrusters and fleeing without ever firing a shot.

Three P's: Platinum, Palladium, and Painite. The materials most sought by miners. "If you're mining for profit, remember the Three P's."

Four P's: Protons, Neutrons, Electrons and Morons. The four fundamental particles that make up the universe. "I sense a great imbalance in the Four P's gathered here tonight. Care to guess which there are too many of?"

Navel Orange: A particular kind of planet, noted for both it's coloration and enormous crater that bares a striking resemblance to the fruit of the same name. "You see that navel orange there? That's why we can't frame shift jump within a star system." - A possibly apocryphal explanation given to both new and old pilots who complain about not being able to frame-shift jump within star systems.

Racing the Pizza Guy: The act of ordering a pizza delivery at the beginning of a run to Hutton Orbital to see which arrives first, your ship or your pizza.

Shooting Hoops: A high-speed, boosted run at the mail slot you hope doesn't end badly. "There were three of us, smuggling Onionhead in to Patterson and we all ended up Shooting Hoops to avoid being scanned."
- Half-Court Shot: Shooting Hoops from 5.5km away. "I managed to return the stolen plans, but I had to take a half-court shot to get in without being scanned."
- Full-Court Shot: Shooting Hoops from 7.5km away. "There's nothing as amusing as watching a newbie take a Full-Court Shot and getting caught in the toast rack."
