Elite Dangerous (Steam) just set a new All Time record for concurrent CMDRs, beating previous highest in Nov 2015

These kind of threads are always hilarious. 😂

Steam numbers are down
Group A: Game is ded!!
Group B: Steam numbers are meaningless!

Steam numbers are up
Group A: Steam numbers are meaningless!
Group B: Clearly best game eva!
Group C: Bingo!

Numbers are good though, and you can feel it in game, even in Colonia (y)

As I keep saying, Steam data is the only data we have.

To the doomsayers, either you use Steam data or you have nothing to assert your claims with, in which case, you can be safely ignored.

Those are your only two choices.

Well, it IS funny, but it also makes sense.

If lots of players are playing on Steam, the game has a lot of players, irrespective of other platforms. If not many are playing on Steam, then the game might have a lot of players, dependent on the other platforms. :)

Would it be any less valid to point out when the numbers go down again a couple of months later?

I mean, I don't really care about steam numbers either way.
About the only thing they're really useful for is in establishing trends rather than anything more definitive.
Beyond that, I don't really care if there's a hundred people playing ED or a 100,000.
Long as FDev keep the lights on, good luck to everybody concerned.

Seems a bit silly to dismiss them continually and then start making threads about them a couple of days after an update, though.

It's quite silly to claim that the game is dying every time steam numbers go down, these people have been proven wrong again and again (and again).

Still interesting though .. you can at least assess the likelihood of future lights' failure to illuminate (or otherwise).

Group T: <Nods in appreciation of Group B's current approach to making the point after just saying it directly to Group A was ignored repeatedly.>

Also,

Group T: <wonders if its self application of the word 'Group' may be a wistful exaggeration of the actual numbers>

;)

I think you forgot group C:

Steam numbers are down
Group C: That is expected behaviour in the periods without updates

Steam numbers are up
Group C: That is expected behaviour when we get updates

Although that does not really seem to be the topic here. The topic here is the absolute historic concurrency record we have just had.

I don't deny the existence of group C, but they are not the ones that make me laugh.

Do we have numbers for copies sold per Platforms?
No, but comparing squadron leaderboards across platforms suggests about 75% PC (Steam or otherwise) and of the rest PS4 is a fair bit bigger than XBox. Good enough for basic approximation, anyway.

For alternative views of activity numbers: highest in-bubble EDDN jump activity since January 2019
Second highest all-time Colonia region traffic (highest when DW2 passed by)

It'll be interesting to see what the squadron leaderboards look like at the end of the season, too, for a more averaged out trend.

That's not how it went.

Group A: There are only 6000 people playing the game. The game is dying.

Group B: No, that's concurrent numbers, you don't expect the same 6000 players playing 24/7. The player base on steam is significantly higher.

Group A: But it shows trends.

Group B: Sure it shows that player numbers goes up and down depending on circumstances. Just like any other game.
