News Elite: Dangerous Steam Keys

Again, FD need to make this much clearer (for their own benefit really)

whilst game skins and DLC I can see steam taking a cut, I cant see any reason why they should have a cut of any meat space items. IF I buy a Disney game from steam, they sure as heck wont get a cut of any toys i buy from the disney store!.

Yes they sure should have, because if I had understood that from the beginning I would never have asked for a Steam key.
I thought that buying stuff directly from Frontier's store would guarantee FD maximum profit even if I had a Steam key.
I enjoy Steam very much, but my loyalty is to FD: My Steam key will remain unused.

I would have hoped to buy things like skins, mugs, t-shirts etc from the zaonce store and give Frontier all the money but if valve take a cut from all that, I'll stay non-steam.

Steam taking a cut from mugs and t shirts sounds horribly wrong, they are physical goods...... steam is a digital store...

From my point of view FD already have my money, (alpha access, all expansions) I'm probably not going to spend much more on the game (maybe a skin or 2) so it probably won't make a difference.

However, my only reason to use steam would be if it automatically keeps the client up to date, so no long waits when I fire up the launcher and the game has updated. Does it do that?

Yeah, that's a fair interpretation. We don't think of it as a tax though, just part of working with third party retailers.
Yeah... I think I'll pass on Steam after all... I'll rather that you guys keep that percentage... And while we are at it, I hope that we will get some nice new skins soon (some for Anaconda maybe).

Giving the fact that steam get a 30% cut off your profits i will not be claiming this steam key. Could someone please tell me how to link the game as a non steam game to my steam?

I ask this out of genuine ignorance as the last time I actually bothered with steam properly was for Half Life 2, Im not a fan of having progs running away in the background using up resources so dont really want it running etc.
Anyway my question, what are the benefits, if any, or negatives, of having a steam key for ED rather than just continuing the way I have from the day I purchased ED through the store and running it the normal way?

I have a big issue buying digital content from a provider that can't keep their digital store up, their bread and butter depends on that thing and right now it's been hosed for nearly 2 hours. Forget steam keys for a moment, imagine if all you wanted to do right now is buy the game? your experience would be extremely TERRIBLE. Wan't a skin for that ship? nope.

Any smart web team would've anticipated this load coming a mile away and responded to it appropriately or better yet set a system up that responded to this load automatically.

This is why steam is good, we don't wait hours attempting to login to it. We used to 12 years ago, but it's a mature platform now. If steam store crashed like this, they'd lose a tonne of customer faith, let a lone publisher faith and there'd be write ups of it all over the place.

I kind of see your point, but then I often have issues with steam as well, just last monday our group kept getting kicked from our steam group and I have "issteamdown" as a short cut on my game pc browser as it goes down so often.

also, try buying stuff in the steam sales..... even they collapse under the strain sometimes.

welcome to the digital world :(

The benefits are basically restricted to the ability to leave a review of the game on steam, and showing people you're playing it on steam and tracking how long you played through steam. There's not really any negatives to you as you can still run it outside of steam, but Steam eats 30% of your purchases from that point on so there's negatives to Frontier.

Just thought about something and I hope (assume) FD have done the same.

If Valve now will take a cut of all future purchases of cosmetics and expansions in the Elite Store then there is no longer a reason to keep these things exclusive to their store either. They should now be able to sell these on Steam too for people who already have access that way.

Yeah, make the most of it and really leverage Steam for all it is worth!

Any word on if it'd apply to stuff like shirts and books? Those are most of the things that I buy (outside of FDL skin when I get an FDL and they have a new color/pattern I want)

Thanks, the answer gives me the exact reason I will not bother then.
I am not interested in knowing how long I've been on etc, I can tell myself lol
I'd rather my cash if I buy anything from the store go directly to FD so it can be put to use in development.
Im kind of confused then why people are clammering for steam keys if thats what they get from it.

I Purchased Elite + Expansions Pass back in the Days and i would really love to add the game to steam (Friends, Archievments, Reviews). I think i won´t pay for Paintjobs or Cosmectical Changes in the Future. Sooo... what should i do ?

If your not going to make any cosmetic changes to your game then go for it :).

I'm going to be shouted down here but whatever, my opinion.

I personally find it disgusting that valve take a cut from non-digital items such as merchandise. I'm sorry Frontier but that for me would have been a deal breaker and if that was the only deal they offered, I'd have kept the game off steam.

I have no problems with them taking a cut of digital copies of the game but this is too much. imo of course

I'll ask again since it's been lost in the mix: will beta access still be available to those who already have it if the account is converted to a Steam-based one? Other games offer this so I can't see a problem but would like a formal answer.
