Elite Dangerous | System Colonisation Beta Details & Feedback

Many here have regretted choosing a bigger starport due to the extremely high material requirements.

Question 1: Is it possible to abandon the claim and reclaim the system right away in order to switch to a smaller outpost?
Suggestion: It would be even better if there was an option to "redeploy colonization ship" without taking the risk of someone stealing your system!
Edit: An option to "scale down construction effort" at a certain cost would also be a good idea, as it could help CMDRs to at least build a small station if they notice they won't be able to finish a big one.

Question 2: Do you really get the same time limit for constructing an outpost and a huge space station? (Pieced this together from other CMDRs' posts, but might be wrong)
It has to be extremely frustrating to try grinding a station for a month for several hours a day, only to lose all progess if you fail. I can't see how anyone in their right might would begin with anything but an outpost... especially since the colonization ship seems to arrive at a random location - Around 14,000 ls from arrival point in my case, while there are around 30 better locations left...
Suggestion: Give us (much) more time to build bigger stations! Also, let us choose where to send the colonization ship. Maybe more incentives to build bigger stations are needed. Right now, "playing it safe" by building an outpost seems the only reasonable option unless you are part of a huge community effort.

well, AFAICS I'll have to visit a bare minimum of 44 surface stations just to scrape together the CMM needed for an outpost. Thats assuming everyone else doesn't get there first. Is there any point at all in even starting this?

I abandoned a system for this reason - immediately lost the rights to colonize it and I dont know for how long. Id recommend having a squad mate or friend on standby to grab it as soon as you abandon if they arent already doing one.

FDev, any idea when carriers will be able to jump? Currently getting the 'no slots available" message. Should I just keep trying periodically?

So. I chose to build an Orbis station, big one with a ring round it...and it's about 200,000 units to build...which is stupid. But my main gripe is I chose the system...set up the beacon and went there. Now it's chosen a random moon for my initial starport and I couldn't be more unhappy about it...its 4300Ls from entry. I've already unclaimed and reclaimed the system so I can't start over again and I really really need a dev or something to move the colonisation ship to next to the primary star in the system and not some crappy little moon 4300Ls away from entry.

Hmm the two of you seem to have had different experiences:

Snail, you were able to "abandon effort" and then reclaim a system once, correct? Did you have to wait for some time to reclaim it? What tells you that you cannot do it again?

Greetings Commanders,

Following your feedback we have greatly increased the restock rate on CMM Composites to improve the System Colonisation process.
Am I the only one who has trouble finding this "greatly increased restock rate" of CMM Composites? The best restock I've found up to now was 13t per tick (10 min). At that rate it would only take me about one week of continuous playing to get enough CMM Composites for a starport. And, you know, sometimes people need to sleep, work, and do other things.

I don't think the amount of goods that are required is completely unreasonable, but the goods should be available somewhere.

I know its Beta and they will likely adjust the numbers, but how did the CMM stock levels get through testing? I was really looking forward to this update, but its looking like a non starter as it stands (I play solo).

On CMM composites, why not just put up a competitive buy order on an FC? People keep saying credits are meaningless right?

Sure they're rare... but whatever... colour me pleased that supplying goods isn't just a milk run for once. Better get working on building surface refineries for future colonies i guess.

Edit: alternately, what about running missions where they get offered as a cargo reward from relevant stations? Or stealing them from missions?

I did not realise that:
  • the minor faction of the station I staked the claim at would be the main faction of my system
  • my squadron's minor faction would apparently be a 3rd faction of the system
  • who knows what the second faction is
  • the amount of resources required for the very cool asteroid base is 72063 tonnes of goods. In a T9 laden at 750 tonnes every trip, that is 97 trips. At around 20 minutes per trip, that is around 10 hours per week - which I don't have.
  • the colony ship would go to a random location in my system and would not be movable once there

I did realise that there would be a grab for the "good" systems and am glad I got mine. Friends who got in an hour later ran into a lot of "claims taken" or "cannot claim this system" errors, so I did not read the information properly and now cannot find the resources needed anywhere else.

So my suggestions
  • Allow to choose the minor factions (like you can when creating a squadron)
  • Allow to reposition the colony ship
  • Allow to change the type of base built if not started yet

As to the amount of materials required for large bases, it's pretty massive, but I guess we can start with an outpost and then create a large base without a time limit. I hope.

Any updates as to why claimable systems give me the "System Claim Unsuccessful" message?
This is very disheartening, because I staked out a cool spot before the update.
I do my best to organize everything so that I can claim it.
But of all the millions of stars in the bubble, I found one that might be bugged.

It's green when making a claim, not pink or anything.
I click the button to make the purchase and boom, unsuccessful.

Not sure if this catches the eyes of any devs, seeing as others are also encountering more common issues.
I made a ticket, but I still worried this will get fixed when I'm asleep or something and despite having eyed out a spot, it can't be claimed.
It's a bummer.

Oh, I think I've been duped somewhere.

I downloaded the update, went into the game, chose a far from tasty place, put up a beacon, an carrier arrived, delivered 8 types of resources...

After which a friend asked me to restart, and .... this system is no longer mine. I flew to it, landed the carrier, but I can no longer enter the “Construction” tab - it's just plain inactive. I'm not angry at the current moment, but this seems like a problem.....

PS. After a couple restarts, the Build button became active, the resources are all mine. But there is no mission. Should I be worried?
