Elite Dangerous: Updates to Powerplay In Update 7

Is it worth them putting the time and effort into something that only a small percentage of the player base partake in. After all they binned VR development without a care in the world.
It depends if it brings something new to ED. I certainly don't support the whole game going Open (which won't work), but with Powerplay being a malnourished cousin to the BGS these days it needs a reason to exist as it does.

It's one of those things that sounded like a good idea at the group meeting but never reached it's full potential, probably due to changes of personnel.

This is what I call the ED disease. You can be happily playing in Solo or in a PG, and people who are never going to see you in the game get upset about the mere fact that you might be having a good time and they can't stop you. It's utterly daft control-freakery. I think they need to take a long run on a short pier. Sorry to be forthright, but it's been going on since day 1, shows no sign of abating and is getting thinner and thinner rationalisation.

Play in whatever mode you like and have fun.
Don't have a go at me for wanting to play solo. It's my game mode of choice and Frontier give me that option so do one.

Yeah MOST of us are not griefers or gankers, and have no desire to stop your fun, we just want a multiplayer game to actually be multiplayer.
Just like most of the players in open right now aren't ganking or griefing.

I can agree that most players are not a problem, and most players are helpful.(y)
Multiplayer is happening right now, and many play that way...
Solo is also happening right now, and many people play that way ...

However, from the outset (as far as I know) different playstyles have been part of the base plan - to allow people the choice to go multiplayer / solo / private group ...
I have occasionally played in a couple of private groups - great experience because there is no griefing etc ...
Even so, my preference is solo - and currently both you and I have a viable and enjoyable playstyle choice ... :D

Unfortunately, doing Powerplay (a consentual, competitive player vs player activity) in Solo/PG does infringe on Open powerplayers. In Open play, there's risk of running into hostile players which forces you to compromise on your ship-build and strategies. In Solo play, there's no risk of losing a load of forts or expansion cargo. NPCs cannot provide a challenge for players, only other players can.

There's no viable, meaningful playstyle for organic pvp players in the game and that bores many pvp'ers. Which I believe leads to ganking and griefing. A sort of vicious cycle, if you will. Powerplay is in an awkward spot, with no real gameplay reason to exist in its current state. BGS hauling, exploration and combat are more varied, more profitable and more refined.

I don't see why not take an activity which pits playergroups against each other, and making Powerplay the outlet for consentual organic pvp in Elite. Open-only is one change I think is required, which removes the allure of the safety of PG and incentivizes players improve their skills, ships and teamplay in order to be more effective.

I strongly suspect most people who vocalize about quitting if it were to happen, would not actually do so. As it stands if you are a casual trader/explorer you won't run into more than a couple people a week in open, it's not a constant gank fest, and they would realize that when forced to try it out a little. Powerplay locations on the other hand, tend to draw that kind of interaction, as it should be. Space is big enough for us all to be around without stepping on each other too much.
Based on my recent experience, I strongly disagree with your supposition that "it's not a constant gank fest".

oh? Where and when? It would be nice to see more than one other player every other week, even if they were shooting at me. Its so empty for a forced online, 'multiplayer' game.
It would be nice to have some kind of "mini-CGs" in permit-locked/open only systems to specific pledged players and backed by a lore/galnet stuff...

As much as I agree with you. I feel the best way forward is for encourage people to play in open, with extra incentives and not to reduce the functionality. I'm much more in favour of open players having a lot more influence on the PPBS that players that player in pvt/solo. It will not exclude players from powerplay but would reduce effectiveness of the 5C players and bot networks (who mostly play in solo).

I would go one further and make it so solo has zero effect on PP and BGS. Let them play with the results, not change them, at most.

PowerPlay might be better as open-only, but then Sony & Microsoft should get rid of online tax - I don't regard the probability of that happening very high.

PvP playground is not what the Back Ground Simulation is. Everyone and everything in game has an effect on it, regardless of mode or platform.
Biggest flaw the BGS is that it is so volatile, all too easy to influence dramatically. Other, almost as big flaw is that it seems to be coupled with PP, which should be an entirely separate thing.

Good points, the same I did multiple times in other several threads... certain activities are well fitted for such kind of game mode "restrictions". I mean, powerplay is 100% fine with open-only, as far as its links with BGS of local government types are removed. Unfortunately that will require a substantial redesign of the powerplay mechanics and hence I guess it's something that is not going to happen soon (if it will ever happen).
