Cobra looks smaller than a Sidewinder, though.

Ah yes, I'm glad you said because I meant to ask. A) have I done the Cobra too small? and B) are there any official dimensions for the ships? I'm looking through the manual now and it only gives mass size.

Well, Sidewinder is much smaller than Cobra Mk.III and has similar shape, while your Cobra is about as large as absolutely necessary to accommodate a cockpit.

Not that I know of, but in FE2 Cobra Mk.III is about this large:

Sizes in game are sometimes inconsistent though (Constrictor, for example seems way too large) and cargo capacity overall seems too low, but yeah, Cobra should be much bigger.

Eagle, for example, is much smaller and lighter, but seems to be to scale with both those houses (in Eagle you can see the pilot in the cockpit) and Cobra (max weight).

Dimensions given in the Elite manual are

65 x 30 x 130 in feet which I always took to be the length,height and breadth

I don't suppose you know the dimensions of the Lion Transport then? If not, what about a big freighter from Elite?

You can always land them next to some houses and take reference screenshot.

There seems to be a reference chart based on actual in-game comparisons floating around as well.... Here.

Notice that some ships are simply too big in game.

Yep, Panther clipper for me.

Also slightly reminicent of the Spacee 1999 ship.

Cool. I'd make Panther in E4 somewhat more similar to lifter in that it's front pair of main thrusters would be wider than the one in the back. This way it'd be able to fire all four while flying forward. Also, Panther should have main and bottom thrusters effectively s***ped when in landing configuration, which would allow it to take off with more load.

I would've thought that a vertically staggered configuration would make more sense for the main thrusters as it leaves more overall space for cargo.

Something like this: The actual thrusters would be able to gimball within the nacells.

This would work even better, as it would allow for easy integration of retros and manoeuvring thrusters into the nacelles. :)

RE: Elite comparison chart

You need to slap a Griffin on there. As the biggest ship in the game, and like a huge fist and forearm in space, its my favourite. I wonder what a re-imagined Griffin carrier would look like ?

I don't know.
I never liked Griffin, TBH. It's nonsensical design embodies all the problems I have with most fictional spaceships.
