Elite: Harmless - Karma System aka "be the Tamagotchi" - FRESH SALT, MINED RIGHT HERE

It seems like a vital part of the conversation has been missed by both sides of the argument. Here you go...

Looking to the future, if/when we get to add a karma system (no ETA, no guarantee)...

While I see the proposal as a positive thing, I'm not holding my breath. Those like the OP, who are scared of the proposal have nothing to worry about. It'll be a long, long time before it's even considered. Probably years. You'll probably find some other way to annoy others by then.

You're welcome.

If you want to be a badass pirate / killer you can actually be one with a karma system. Currently there is nothing Dangerous in the game for you. A high security system is a joke. The only reason you chose to be a murdering PvPer is because you don't like risk or consequences. There is NOTHING dangerous about attacking a harmless Sidewinder in LHS 3447. Introducing a Karma system would mean that you are still able to do it, but you must accept the consequences of your behaviour. Your new base of operations will be an Anarchy, because most civilised systems revoked your docking and insurance rights (after you made 500 people leave open because you repeatedly killed them in Sidewinders with your all mighty Cutter). Your argument actually goes AGAINST your wishes. If you want the game to be dangerous start with yourself.

It's not called Karma because there is something spiritual about it, but because it remembers your action even after paying bounties and fines. You could also call it a reputation system, but since this term is already used in game it would be even more confusing.
So if you want to play a character with a bad reputation, why do you think the game shouldn't actually acknowledge your reputation?

Like I said, we need a broader Notoriety system that covers PvP & PvE. Long after bounties expire, factions should remember if you have committed frequent criminal acts within their jurisdiction.

Hey, thats my idea :D
I wouldn't be surprised if half of the most active players are bad boys and girls.
Now they cant apply the appropiate punishment because half.....HALF the players!!!!
I think its still a bit too early to say its a bad decision.
But most likely it will take out the fun and danger element once more.
Lemme see....we had danger neutron stars and white dwarfs....mmhh they no longer dangerous, same for black holes.
The only danger element will be the station defense system. lol

Sad, but it wouldnt the first great game flushed into the abyss because of too many ----censored----

I personally consider an AI nanny tasked with enforcing good behaviour to be a massive failure in game design. If you need to have hidden rules and a good-boy ranking because the rest of the game's systems and universe are incapable of performing that task, then perhaps you need to stop thinking about slapping bandaids onto an open wound, and get the needle and thread instead!

So if you have to make those thoughts before hit "interdict" you can leave the interdictor at home right away. Make open totally super safe unless it is an arranged encounter

So you're upset because instead of killing everything indiscriminately, you actually have to THINK about your actions? Almost like you might need to do if it wasn't just a simple game, but was actually a well designed in-game universe?

That's literally the best type of immersion you can get in a game when you have to carefully consider what the consequences of your actions might be, rather than treating the game like just another fps sandbox.

Not sure if you realize it, but you've basically managed to describe exactly why the type of karma system FD is planning to implement will be a very GOOD feature for the game. Instead of being charged the Elite equivalent of a $6 fine for murdering someone, with absolutely no other in-game consequences, now you will have to actually THINK about what you're doing instead.

You've also managed to demonstrate what I've been saying all along, which is that over 95% of the "PvP community" are not actually interested in anything resembling real PvP. You have no interest in piracy, or proper PvP, or any other legitimate in-game activity here. You just want to "win" as often and as easily as possible, using as much of an imbalanced situation as possible, and FD is finally trying to put a stop to that type of "gameplay" because it adds nothing to an online gaming experience.

Sorry, the noob-clubbing salt train has reached the last stop. You'll need to walk the rest of the way.

Jeez, no salt is mined here, it is offered in tons.

Anything that is going to prevent me from combat logging the bio waste out of these heros is a bad idea. So sorry Sandro, back to the drawing board :D

To op, have you even read it on reddit?

You guys are harsh, I am sure the OP is not the kind of guy who will randomly attack you from behind when you are scanning generation ship poi's from 200m without a word killing without impunity or thought.

The OP spilt so much salt I almost shrivelled up.

Hot shot, the galaxy will become more dangerous for killers. Isn't that a good thing if you're a killer and want a challenge?

That's the great irony of this thread; It'd actually make the game MORE dangerous by moving PvP players closer together so they can fight it out. Clearly the Op knows this, but doesn't want to attack players willing to fight.

Karma system to me, feels like something that should have been in from Day 1. If you were a murdering psychopath, your reputation would be that nobody in their right mind would want to help you, other than similar minded people / systems. If this constrains the forementioned psychopaths to Anarchy systems, making those extremely hazardous, that's a good thing. As a simple trader, you'd want to avoid them unless you want to run the risk.

Implement it.....

The irony really is, well... almost beautiful. Gankers are supposed to mine salt from others, not spill it. Grow a spine and enjoy a harder challenge, rather than turn uber nerd, grind everything to max as quickly as possible and fly around with your mates swatting flies, you may have to think a little, choose targets wisely and manage risk. FFA arenas are great if the playing field is somewhat level. Flying and tactical skill come into their own.

Unfortunately Frontier implementing the usual old MMO RPG time grind has removed the level playing field and thus, those treating this potentially amazing sandbox as FFA with impunity will be subject to an increased risk. Isn't that what most people want, so why cry?

Having read some of that reddit link now, all i see is a few ideas and thoughts vented and theorized about, some good ones and some perhaps not quite as good.
Not like any of that is imminent next week or that actual work on it has even begun, which i would have thought it perhaps had.
In fact none of it may ever happen at all, it's all completely vague and hypothetical.
Sadly i have to say to the OP, you have nothing to worry about, not now, not soon, and perhaps even not ever.
What you achieved however is to provide the people you despise so much with a very satisfying glimpse of what sort of reaction a karma system might trigger.
Mission accomplished then.

as a bit of a dirtbag myself, would love to see this come to be. doubt it will though, as its been talked about a couple of times by the devs but never happens. shame, because it would get me playing again on a regular basis

Yeah, one thing the hypothetical justice system shows is things won't change at all on the forums if it's implemented. Instead of threads titled: "I was killed in a starter system for no reason!", we'll see, "My rebuy went up because I killed a harmless player!"

The dispassionate response of the forums will be exactly the same:

"It's called Elite:Dangerous" & "You don't like it, go play solo or private group."

If the carma system has designs to return people to open, they may find that horse has already bolted thanks largely to the anti-social game play.
