Community Event / Creation Elite HUD Manager

(APPLICATION) Elite HUD Manager

Hello, fellow Commanders!

I was wandering the Galaxy on my way to Sagittarius A* when I came across a gorgeous white giant. Enthralled by it's luminescence I was struck by a flash of inspiration.

Introducing to you... The Elite HUD Manager!

Release Notes:
V1.3:
- Fixed a bug where the HUD would appear as black in the event the Operating System's decimal mark was a comma instead of a period.
- Changed all maximum values on first load to 1 as it used to be. This will enable a "full" range of possibilities instead of variations of the default skin colours.

v1.2:
- Preview mode available. This allows you to see what a HUD will look like without any further modifications to your in-game HUD profile. If you like the looks of a particular HUD layout, switch to Preset mode and Save as a Preset.

v1.1:
- Extended Ranges implemented. This allows you to go into negative values for a particular colour in a row, which is useful for a few different colour modifications.

v1.0:
- Presets implemented. This allows you to view and save preset HUDs by switching to Preset Mode.

That's great and all, but what does it do?
Multiple things.

- HUD Generator: Creates a new Colour Matrix and deploys it as an Elite Dangerous HUD Configuration. A preview of the HUD is displayed on the Right-Hand side of the Application. Within the Generator, you can specify the Maximum and Minimum ranges for each Matrix and Colour. The "Randomise Ranges" button will apply a random set of ranges to the application, although having a Minimum of 0 and a Maximum of 1 works well, too. For Steam users, it is important to check the "I am using Steam" button when using Silent Mode, as without it, Elite Dangerous will launch without the Steam Overlay.
- HUD Preset Manager: Allows players to save HUD configurations in .xml files, and store them in Elite Dangerous' Directory for future use.
- Silent Running: By creating a Shortcut to EliteHUDManager and adding "-s" to the Shortcut's Target Field (In properties, shown below), The shortcut will silently generate a new HUD or apply one of your presets before Launching Elite Dangerous autonomously.

Installation/Uninstallation:
Steam and Non-Steam Players:
- To install this application, all you have to do is drop it into Elite Dangerous' Installation Directory (For Steam users, this is usually C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Elite Dangerous).
- Open EliteHUDManager.exe. Steam Players will need to check "I am using Steam" to ensure that the Steam Overlay loads.

Making a Shortcut:
Outside of Steam:
- Right-Click the Application and "Create shortcut". Put it on your Desktop or wherever you place your games.
- Right click the Shortcut and select "Properties". in the Target field, append an -s to the end of it. This will make the application silent, and load straight into Elite Dangerous's Log-in Window.

Inside Steam:
- In the Top Left corner of the Main Steam Window, go to Games > Add a Non-Steam Game to my Library.
- Click the Browse button, then Navigate to Elite Dangerous' Installation Directory (usually C:/Program Files (x86)/Steam/steamapps/common/Elite Dangerous)
- Select EliteHUDRandomiser.exe, then Add Program.
- Right Click the EliteHUDRandomiser.exe entry in your Steam Library and select "Properties".
- Press "Set Launch Options". Add "-s" to the text box, then press OK.

When making a Shortcut for Silent Running, you will need to open the Base Application (Found by Right Clicking the Shortcut > Open File Location) if you want to adjust any settings.

Uninstallation:
- Navigate to the Elite Dangerous Application folder
- Delete EliteHUDManager.exe, the EHMPresets folder and EliteHUDManagerconfig.txt.
- Delete any Shortcuts you made. There, Uninstalled!

Well done my friend. I almost did a tool like this for my personal use (also in C#). Not as complete as yours (no screenshot or profiles). But alas my work and lack of time (the free time i got, I used it to play Elite :D) washed away any patience i had to finish it. +1 Rep to you.

Good work Sir. I might give it a go.

Can I test it outside of the game just to see the previews?

How on earth do I change the orange but keep red thing like target red and blue things like shield blue and green stuff green? Where the orange colour changer please?

Derp. I'm going to have to implement a preview only mode. At the moment it'll preview what it's already generated/changed. Sorry! An update with that is available now. You can enable a Preview Mode checkbox, which removes the minimum and generate buttons (Because they're for the random generation), and lets you see the state of the HUD at any given time. If you like the looks of a particular HUD type in preview mode, you can save it as a preset by switching to Preset Mode and saving as a Preset.

As far as I'm aware, that's not something you can do outright. The game modifies the HUD by multiplicatively adjusting the RGB value of colours. Anything Red will be affected mostly by the Red Matrix, whereas anything Blue will be most affected by the Blue Matrix. If you haven't already, try enabling Extended Ranges, you may get a little more flexibility by being able to adjust into negative values, but no promises.

This is great. I was fiddling with it from desktop and didnt realise it still over wrot the game files. Worth adding to your notes.

Okay for play with colurs is it columns or rows? I'm very simple. All this talk of matrixe zis is confuding.

Sorry about that; Elite Dangerous modifies its colours in ways most other games don't at the user-level.

The short answer is: Adjust colours based on row. When you're looking at the Default HUD, you'll see a lot of Oranges, Reds and Blues. Orange is generally made up of two parts Red, one part Green. This means that when you modify the Colour Matrix's Red row, the Main areas of the HUD will see the most change. If you modify the Green row, the main HUD will also change, but not as much as if you'd changed the Red row. When you are changing values with this application, you are seeing how the HUD will colourshift, from its default colours to its adjusted colours.

If you want blue tones for the majority of your HUD, you'd want to remove the Red from the Red row (making sure the value in the R column is 0, or less than G and B), while pushing up the G and B values. B would be higher than G. If all three columns are 1, you will see white, as each pixel that has Red in it will be given maximum intensity in all three primary colours. Put all three together, you get white. Take all three away to 0, you get black.

The Blue Row primarily affects the colour of your shield bar, as well as the shadow of your Trade and Explorer ranks on the right-side panel.

No matter what I do with this tool all my hud elements turn black. :(

That's more than a little odd. Would you mind uploading a screenshot of the application as it appears when it starts up? A copy of the EliteHUDManagerconfig file would help, too. I apologize for any trouble this has caused you in the interim

Hello thks for your work, I have the same issue than Tesshin all my Hud are black...
I don't have the .txt I deleted it, to try to have the defaut settings.
I'm a steam user.

Thanks for letting me know Zom.B. I haven't been able to replicate it on my end yet, but hopefully I'll be able to pinpoint the issue.

Could you send me a screenshot of what the application looks like when you open it up directly (e.g. not from a shortcut/in Silent Running mode)
It should look like this:

T7Ycd6q.png

Maximum Row Intensity should be 3, and the Maximum Values should appear as follows. If you click "GenerateGraphicsConfigurationOverride.xml", the image on the right should change colour to reflect what you'd see in ED. Does the image change to solid black? I'd appreciate it if you could tell me the Intensities generated when you click as well (visible on the bottom of the application)

At the moment I'm suspecting it's due to default behaviour I've implemented when the game's default values are placed as the Maximum Intensity. I'm thinking that as there is only one point of variance in each row of the matrix, that in likely circumstances, the intensities of the HUD will be rather low.

If you set the Maximum Intensities of Every Column and Row to 1.00, all the minimums to 0, and generate an override.xml file, does it have improved results?

I'll keep looking for a possible cause, but in the meantime, try these steps if you can and relay the results to me; I'd greatly appreciate it.
