Elite is a bit crap and has lost its way.

I think some dialup BBSes existed though. Remember my first flame-war in mid 80's.

I remember the modem from the movie Wargames. That was 1983. We wouldn't have been able to have anything like that back then...the C64 disk drive was a big deal for us. No modem so I couldn't tell Atari how I felt about E.T. or the Pacman port. Let them know the arcade version was way better and they lost their way.

Yeah. It probably was a bit later. I know we did use modems in 1987 at work for software updates (Unix, loved that Unix system and all the automated scripts we made).

Playing the BBC Micro version of Elite was a visceral experience.

It was indeed. I was thinking this the other day. Maybe because I was 12 years old and still had an imagination unbound by the apathy of others, as Bill used to say.

This isn't.

Indeed. But we have to be objective about capability and how vision is not guaranteed to equal product.

It'll be a while yet, but if we care enough they'll get there.

So, other than posting what seems like a bored troll post, why are you bothering with something you do not enjoy playing?

Just curious ... I don't really care ...

Chief

I care quite a lot. Its not a troll post. I am very worried about the direction or lack thereof about one of the most important games in history.

The Elite community personified, ladies and gentlemen. Someone posts about how the game annoys him, people call him a troll and the moderators chime in with the passive-aggressive sniping.

Nice to know I wasn't the only one who noticed.

It's getting to be a clinical psychology case study, this place.

The first step in solving a problem is realising that a problem exists.

Soooooooo, what do you want?

You don't want to do stuff (grind) to make credits, so you want to stay in the starter ship?

You don't want to do stuff to upgrade your modules, so you want to stay with stock modules?

You can you know. Don't grind for credits, don't upgrade, and play the way you want.

I wouldn't say that much of the Release was dull because it didn't deliver the 8bit Gameplay...
The way I see it, it did precisely that in many aspects. Gameplay straight from 25 years ago, ported to a mildly aged Engine and with a very limited MultiPlayer layer added to it.

I guess what most Players were missing throughout V1.x and to an extent in V2.x is modern Gameplay design.
The stuff that goes deeper than what we've been used to in the 80's and 90's.
Sandbox. Alive and dynamic Galaxy. Attention to Detail. Expanding and innovating instead of delivering Copy&Paste and minimalist/RNG Gameplay Elements that at the worst times felt like merely sufficient for Server backend testing. Or tormenting Players.
Placeholders.

There's alot of work to do in V3.x Beyond to flesh out everything and have a 2nd look at many Gameplay elements.
If anything, things should look uphill from here on, when the core game and QOL gets the attention it deserves :)
