Elite is a bit crap and has lost its way.

So in 1984 you would have had to write a letter if you didn't like the game. Maybe a phone call. Or quietly stopped playing like most people did.

And the original elite was not RNG ? buy cargo, fly to another station, sell cargo, maybe get attacked by pirates - brilliant game for it's time though, and a cut above the rest. This game is a marathon, not a sprint, so no point in 'getting ahead quick', where's the fun in that ? There are many things to occupy yourself in game without engineering, just needs a little imagination.

The Elite community personified, ladies and gentlemen. Someone posts about how the game annoys him, people call him a troll and three different moderators chime in with the passive-aggressive sniping.

Well what did you expect? Another person jumps on the bandwagon and doesn't type anything new. Every point he's discussed has been beaten for so long it's glue at this point, not even a horse.

I mean what would you call glue that's been beaten this much?

If you have nothing new to add you shouldn't be making topic number X on this subject. There's like seven different open topics on this on the second page. We don't need another one clogging up the forums.

At this point if you're just going to clog the forums with something that's been discussed, digested, and have nothing new to add, you're just trolling the forum with spam topics.

I wouldn't be surprised if the mods were getting sick of this too. It's just more work for them.

So I've just loaded up my old save games in Elite 3 First Encounters. (Yeah, it's insane, I still got them! And I love firing them up like decades since I've played last!)
In any way. Had a bit of a look around of what I actually did back then. Trade. Missions. Fly about, read the news, fly about some more. Go bounty hunting in independent systems, get even more bounties in said systems on my own head. Explore as well of course.
Looking at Elite Dangerous now... Yep, I can do the same stuff. Trade, bounty hunt, trade some more, fly about, read the news. I can even meet real people while doing so! Of course exploration is still a thing. :)

So to recap. They went and redid the Elite of old. Feels and plays pretty much the same. Does that make me happy? Aye damn it does! I'm a happy camper and everything that get's packed on top makes me even happier.
Of course I'd like to land on atmosphere planets rather today then tomorrow. But being a game dev myself I know these things take time.

So you are complaining about the game, doesn't that mean you also hated the originals? (BTW: There were articles about it being too grindy out there back then imagine that!)
Maybe your taste has simply changed in the last decades. Who knew? Stuff like that happens.

I remember the amount of trade I had to put in to fly my first Panther Clipper in First Encounters. Oh boy, the grind was real, I tell you. Did I mind? Nah. Do I mind now? Nah. Not in a rush. There's nothing to be completed. There's just me and the galaxy along with lots of other folks. I'm not the center of attention. Stuff is happening but most importantly stuff is happening perfectly fine without me. So I can take my time and do whatever I like. (Gosh, it's so refreshing to have a game that doesn't care about what I do. A game where it's not up to me to save the galaxy. Like, again.)

Looooong story short, tastes are different. I love Elite. Always have. And Elite Dangerous is, for me, giving me the same experience that Elite 2 and 3 gave me. (I never did play the first, I have to admit. I'm old, but not that old.)

Well I never got FFE beyond the hexadump screen even with the patch but I did rack up 100's of hours in FE2 on the Amiga and then PC. Back then the term "grind" hadn't been invented (AFAIR it's migrated from the tablet games and the endless gathering of resources to upgrade one sniper tower in CoC). No it was "immersive and extended gameplay", "this game will draw you in and keep you busy for months" etc. etc. In an era where you could finish a flight sim campaign (I remember those) flying six or seven missions it was something to get your teeth into.

Perhaps our expectations have moved on and some people need more purpose, ED does rekindle those glory days but with more to do by way of Horizons and Engineers. You could assert the latter effectively represent a kind of campaign as beyond L1 you need to start thinking about how you're going to gather the materials.

Many of the "campaigns" in the X games were a glorified grind, it took me months of admittedly intermittent play to gather all the mats in TC for the Xenon Hub and by that time I was too jaded to tackle the player HQ which was, by all accounts, another resource grind. Even games like Fallout 4 get repetitive as the radiant missions essential to build XP and unlock skills eventually repeated. Or GTA SA painting all those graffiti tags was just a mechanism to pad things out for a small weapon reward. My point being that most games which are more than a quick shoot 'em up involve some degree of repetition to get anywhere. And with the ultimate aim of Elite being to become Elite, all that trading, fighting and exploration is serving a purpose.

Reading the OP post , it sounds like the gist is complaining about the nerfs presumably the nerfed credit exploits in order to "get a ship". So then the usual trollish sounding addon vague bits about the game being grindy, overly rng, and somehow not a visceral game experience like the original 8-bit Elite. "Board flipping"? in FFE, you needed to time skip a day at a time to change the mission board in the station where you're at, and sometimes to wait for crew to hire to pilot a new big ship. Overall, another insta-big ship post in a few weeks with another "game is crap" general disguise if you ask me. OP, you still have freedom to explore and rack up credits either with road-to-riches or your own exploration and cataloging HMCs and ELWs as others have recently mentioned is worth about 10mill/hour which is good enough for a cutter in a hundred hours. Have fun, or probably see you later after your break when you come back after the next rounds of updates.

Yup. Boring. ;-)

(Ps the editor of the video is aware of his spellings... he suffers really badly with dyslexia but doesn't detract from camera work)

Omg, what an epic video! Truly an amazing game. FDevs attention to detail is extraordinary. I have been playing the game for over two years with every ship and most modules engineered. Still not bored one bit. I am overwhelmed by what to do sometimes. I could spend hours looking at all the details of a Sidewinder. The sound, the feel, the cockpit, VR..etc bro. If you just want fun, play a cookie cutter FPS or MMO. Elite is an experience.
