Elite is a convoluted mess

There are some people who don't want to actually learn anything or feel that sense of accomplishment when they actually 'master it', they only want 'easy mode' games, ED isn't one of those games, 'sorry OP', have you tried Star Trek Online yet? You might like that game better, that game 'does everything' for you, just push the single 'fire key' then you'll have your happy fun times again.

Heh, Elite is a bit too simple if anything. Not an arcade shooter, but definitely could use some depth. I guess the limitations of the controllers on those consoles dictate how complex it can get.
You have guessed wrong. I have a binding for everything on a vanilla DS4 with room to spare.

Well arcade game has very simplistic mechanics, simple and easy to learn controlls, very low learning curve. What ever skill is needed is more of pure reflexes. Does that fit to ED?
That doesnt even fit most arcade games. Elite is basically the HAWX of Space sims where its just complex enough compared to the competition that the average person coming over from Freespace thinks its Microsoft Flight Simulator in comparison. And thats not a bad thing.

Elites difficult "Learning Curve" is entirely due to the lack of in game explanations for things, which most people are not going to look up ahead of time. Most of the things you actually do are not hard or challenging in the slightest.

Elite is definitely simcade leaning more towards the arcade.

You can tell by the unnaturally fast acceleration.. other games claiming to be simulators usually allow you to experience (and control) detail in the movements, which you can almost in elite, but by default it’s zero to hero with a point to start shooting. Yes even with d rated thrusters.

There are also weird design choices that stick out as being done for gameplay rather than believability even on frontiers terms.. though those could have equally been from disinterested development given the rest of the game.

Short story:

I rediscovered Elite (now Elite: Dangerous) after a lifetime away - I had played Elite on my Commodore-64 computer and briefly played Frontier Elite II.
I was so excited to rediscover the game in 2019 and I couldn't wait to start and yet, after I got it, I dragged my feet. Why?
I was really worried about being bad at it, but (oddly) only in one particular aspect - the mailslot. I hadn't navigated the entry into a coriolis station in such a long time!
Then I tried it and it was really easy! I couldn't figure out why at first. What was I worried about? Here's an experiment for you: upon dropping out of SC near a station, approach and enter the station without using YAW. No cheating!
That's right: early versions of the game had no yaw axis. You may be surprised by the difference if you haven't experienced it.

It's so easy now that I haven't even considered using any docking computer. Not even for a moment. And yet there are so many more aspects of the game that are deep and complex. Did that stop me? Nah...

Have fun, CMDRs.*

I thought overly complicated was the draw to elite dangerous.

Even though I spend I great amount of time blasting fdev for their egregious decisions. I cant go back to anything less convoluted!

There's a lot of systems to get familiar with commander. Its part of the enjoyment...tinker...discover...and most of all there is no spoo... I mean rush!

I have a niece. One of those gobby prissy 17 yr old glam princess types. Adore her... cos!! She can fly!
I showed her the stick n throttle & headset said this does this this does that she says " it's ok let me figure it out." Planetside about 2 klicks up I watched amazed! I was watching the tv screen of her in vr. And a duck to water is the exact analogy here. Even nap of the earth she is bobbing up n down never above 300m (id told her that's below radar your invis) full throttle in a pimped fdl.
So proud!
Now not being sexist here but my niece cracked it in about 3 minutes. And she's not your stereotype geek....far from it. Guess it's in the blood : l
