Elite Observatory - Search your journal for potentially interesting objects, or notify you of new ones on the fly while exploring!

A new release for you all!

Succinct Sorting

A handful of requested changes/features in this release:
  • List is now sortable by clicking column headers
  • Text-to-Speech notifications are more succinct, simply saying "body" instead of reading out the entire system name
  • Added "Clear List" button
  • Window size and location are now remembered
Plus one (coincidental) bugfix:
  • Should no longer crash to desktop when a TTS notification for a system without a dash in its name occurs.

  • List is now sortable by clicking column headers
In ObservatoryForm.LogEvent when monitoring it can add a ListViewItem with a 2 element string instead of a 5 element one which can crash the app with an index out of range error (in ColumnSorter.Compare) when you've got a custom sort set.

Giving EO a first try it told me a moon was close to a ring. 'How close is close?' I wondered and flew over.

There's every chance I'd have missed this - thank you for the app @Vithigar

Yeah. I've been playing around with this a bit when I need a break from driving my SRV around a planet. This is some good stuff, right up there with the best 3rd party apps.

It's just found these very close-orbiting bodies. Shame they aren't landable, would have made for some great shots.

Well that's exciting.

I was using it last night without issue but I'll look into it (maybe related to sorting? Did you click any headers?). Can anyone else report this happening?

Oh, also, with it sorted so that newest entries are at the top, every time you get an "uninteresting" entry, it puts it at the bottom, so the view jumps to the bottom of the list.

I assume that's cos the "uinteresting" entry has no timestamp. Maybe an option to hide the uninteresting stuff ?

I've been meaning to try this out but I haven't been playing much lately, but tonight I finally gave it a whirl.

Very handy and well done application, well done!

Yep, I think I'll always explore with this from now on.

I still love this, but running it in Monitoring mode along side EDD makes EDD grind to a halt. Stopping monitoring mode makes EDD come back to life again. I assume because both apps are trying to access the same files.

Curious. I've run the side by side as well and never actually noticed. Though I don't generally make much active use of EDD while I'm playing. I'll pay closer attention next time and see if it's the same for me.

I've got a lot of journals, maybe that's the reason ?

I run them both side by side (with a couple of EDD transparent overlays always on and regular interactive use) and I've not noticed any effect on EDD. I've got 613k journal entries, but I only have stats entries in memory beyond 60d (~255k journals loaded at a time by EDD). We're both opening the log files read only with no lock so there shouldn't be much conflict. Are you on an SSD or HDD?

Mine just grinds to a halt. SSD for the game, Observatory, and EDD binaries. The only thing not on SSD is my Documents folder (so the journals). I can't move that without moving my whole Documents folder which I can't do cos of the size :|

If I have Observatory loaded, EDD set to only show last 20 entries, and no other tabs other than History and Settings, then EDD lags behind by about 20+ seconds on journal entries (FSS etc) and mouse click actions. I even struggle to move the window, most of the time it just doesn't respond to anything.

If I stop Observatory, EDD becomes immediately functional again. It's weird.
