Elite Observatory - Search your journal for potentially interesting objects, or notify you of new ones on the fly while exploring!

v1.2.5 is now available!

Some asked for improvements of plugin tabs and popouts are now implemented. Most notably tabs can now be re-ordered by dragging them with the mouse.

Additionally popped out plugins now remember their popped out nature and should pop themselves back out again on Observatory launch.

Finally, the UI should spend less time in an awkward half-drawn state during startup, this is most noticable when doing a read-all on launch, but should also be a marked improvment in general.
  • Improve UX of initial UI load
  • Popouts now remembered
  • Tab re-ordering
  • Implement duplicate title suppression for native voice notifications (fredjk)
  • Fix naming of bespoke body names by Explorer (Earth isn't a primary star!) (fredjk)
  • Improve Framework handling of unrecognized values for enums
  • Tweak intra-plugin messaging to allow destination to be specified, prevent senders from receiving their own message, and prevent duplicate receiving by dual-role plugins. (Matt G)

It's always amazing to me to think about how far Observatory Core as come in the last few months since the UI overhaul launched! IMHO, that was quite an amazing turning point in the app. As a plugin author, there's so much more flexibility and opportunity! Thanks for continuing the development of this great app!

Given the new CG for certain types of worlds, is there a way to set the Explorer to notify us of when those worlds are detected during the system scan? Rocky, Icy, Rocky Ice, Metal-Rich and HMC.

If it is not the settings tab, you need to use custom criteria. They will (as far as I understand) trigger only in systems that are not 'permanently scanned'. For those you need to walk over the system map by hand anyway.

I accidentally found this while looking for something to make exobiology easier. Very helpful in combination with StellarOverlay. :)

What is still missing and waiting for is a full list of values for Evaluator - Show current data (Not implemented yet).

Anyway. Thank you for a great application to make exploration easier. (y)

I've just been testing the Observatory, is there a way to make the text pop-ups fade out after a delay rather than blinking out all at once? It's a small change but I think it might feel a little more like Elite. Thanks for all your hard work! EDIT: I installed Stellar Overlay and found it to be a great upgrade! I didn't install it at first because it had no description, same as Collider.

Also, which font have you guys found to be the closest to Elite's? I've found this: https://edassets.org/#/fonts link to the fonts used in game, but I've noticed that none of them seem to be available on the tool.

Most of Elite's in game text is Eurostile, the favourite font of many, many, futuristic and near-future settings. Any font that you install on your PC should be available in Observatory.

Hi! I've been using Obseratory a while and recently installed the latest version. I have noticed each time it's updating after taking a bio sample, the tab goes blank a moment before adding in the new information (or keeping the same information if it's a second scan). I don't recall this happening before. It's not a huge deal, just a little distracting.

Also, is there a way to display both tabs side by side or above and below? I keep the window up on my second screen and I have to keep switching.

Finally, is it possible to use the custom script to add a column to existing built in triggers? I'd like to add the current estimated scan rewards for each bio type, but am unsure of how to gonabout doing it.

Which plugin is this? Sounds like it might be botanist but would like to be sure.

Yes, right-click a tab and there should be an option to pop it out into its own window.

You can add arbitrary data to the output of a custom criteria, but they don't modify existing built-ins. That said, there is already a plugin that does bio value estimation. Matt G's BioInsights.

Yeah, the botanist. It also happens when using the fss and scanning a body with features (geo or bio).

Perfect!! Thanks!

Thanks again.

v1.2.7 - Persistence Pays Off

This release fixes an issue with persistent notifications, such as those used by Botanist to track current scan status, which prevented notification plugins from being able to properly handle them. This should be most interesting for anyone using MattG's Stellar Overlay.
In addition there is now an option for alternative journal monitoring which actively polls the files to check for changes. This should only be enabled if you're having issues with the normal monitoring not responding to journal changes.
  • Pass generated GUID in initial NotificationArgs object for persistent notifications.
  • Add option for polled journal monitoring
  • Several under-the-hood fixes for settings and error handling (@fredjk-gh)

v1.2.8 - Persistent Fixes

This release fixes an issue with persistent notifications, for real this time.
  • Fix issue where updated notifications could fail to pass Guid correctly when parameters inconsistently populated.
  • New IObservatoryCore.UpdateNotification(NotificationArgs notificationEventArgs) method which does not require redundant Guid parameter.
  • IObservatoryCore.UpdateNotification(Guid id, NotificationArgs notificationEventArgs) is now deprecated in favour of IObservatoryCore.UpdateNotification(NotificationArgs notificationEventArgs). The removal of the obsolete method is not currently planned for any specific release, however plugin developers should move away from it when possible.

What is the best way to install the new version, do you have to uninstall the old one?
I get confused about the "Portable" zip folder.

Yeah I always use the .exe and just run it, just make sure your old version is closed if you clicked on the link in Observatory itself to go to the download page.

Others have answered you about installing a new version already, but I'll shed some light on the "Portable" zip.

It's a self-contained alternative version that doesn't need to be installed and keeps all settings and dependencies inside its own folder. The primary purpose of this is that you could do something like put it on a USB drive or network share and then use the same version of Observatory in multiple locations. Some people also don't like installing things, or prefer for a program to keep to itself a little more and not save things in appdata.

The installed version has some minor QoL improvements over the portable, most notably creating a .eop file association to enable double-click installs of plugins. The portable version can do this too, but requires the user to manually associate the files.

Short version: The setup exe version is fine for the majority of users. If you're unsure about whether you need the portable version then you probably don't.
