Elite / Frontier Elite on iPhone/iPad/Android?

Apologies if this has already been asked before... I was just wondering if the original elite would make a good iPhone/iPad game?

It occurs to me that if it managed to fit in and run on a rubber keyboard spectrum, the latest iWotsits would have no problem - they are thousands of times more powerful.

The original wouldn't cut it as a PC game now (I know about Oolite, its good but not engaging enough now) but it would be a perfect pick up and play game on mobile - and tilting the device to steer could bring a whole new challenge to fighting and indeed docking!

While we're all dreaming about Elite IV (and I have been since my teens and i'm now in my 30s!) - wouldn't it be nice to be able to do a couple of trading runs on the train or in the lunch hour?

I'd much prefer Frontier on iPhone, simply because there's much more to do than there is in Elite. The biggest obstacle wouldn't be the power of the machine - it's more than capable of running the game - but the playability using on-screen controls.

I'm pretty sure it could be overcome though; I remember playing FE2 on the CD32 many years ago, and it worked just great using the controller. So a bit of ingenious design and it could happen.

That would be great for those quieter moments at work :)

Speaking of handheld ports:

I think it's awful, awful, awful, demoniac even, that mr. Braben doesn't permit the Palm OS freeware version of Elite, which is just a port of a very old title that has little commercial value with the technologies of today. What is up with that??

Seriously, what is it? Intellectual property narcissism? Give me a break: we're talking light-years in Elite, while copyrights last a mere 120 years or so.

Well, I just bought a 'magical and revolutionary' iPad to replace my deceased laptop, and I'd love a version of Elite for it, 25 years old or otherwise. I agree it seems rather churlish to stomp on the release of such an old game, but maybe there is some commercial reason. After all, there were two of them back then when they created it.

This tread has got a bit of interrest to me to. I have a iPhone4 recently like a little week.
But I rather see a PC game a Pure DX11 HEavy Testalation en GPGPU (Cuda / OpenCL / DX CS) version with complex and detailed ships.

Interesting, but idos doesn't appear to be available in the App Store. Will try later.

 Yes Steve I just checked and it looks like Apple pulled it (again), guess they don't like people to install things like Windows 3.x using the rabbit hole method (now who'd do that to their ipad? :S wazzant me).

You'll have to jailbreak to get it.

It's still out there but you have to add a repository to cydia to get it. ;)

Elite on Apple?

Not sure if it would run on an iPad. Though it certainly has a MAC version.

The BEST version of Elite to play now days is OOlite.

Seriously, Don't disappoint your nostalgia with the old Elite.

OOlite
Originally written for Mac OS X, and under continuous development for over five years, Oolite is available for Mac OS X (10.3.9 and higher) and PCs running Windows XP, Windows Vista or Linux.

Get some of the addon packs (Griffs Ships and Extra missions etc).

OOlite

A special note for OOlite.

And Possibly a reason it hasn't been pressured by Frontier co.

Recently David.B talked about programing in education (Raspberry).

The fact that OOlite lets (Students Learning Programming) code their own missions in simple JavaScript and actually see the result within an actual game is a particularly strong point for OOlite in light of DB's concerns.

IMHO.

Just give up on there ever being an offical new elite on anything, its dead and frontier developments clearly can't be bothered with it.

I have the origial versions running on dosbox (elite plus, frontier and ffe) and they run fine on my android phone and tablet so it really isnt an issue of power its simply that barben is more interested in Raspberry pi's then decades old fans who made his business possible.

Lets face it when it comes to cutting edge games all frontier developments put out is vapourware. Low grade tat for the wii is about all the can manage these days.

Funny - I thought Frontier developments were doing stuff for the Xbox 360's Kinect nowadays - not the Wii. You may want to double check your facts.

There's not a single Nintendo game made by Frontier Developments mentioned anywhere in these forums aside from NES Elite.

Yep, the cutting edge at the moment is Kinect...i've yet to be blown away by a Kinect game, but it's early days and the good news is Frontier have been with Kinect from the start.
I've no doubt a new Elite/Frontier game will come out, I just imagine DB's scope for it is probably quite high - I bet he really is waiting for technology to catch up with his ideas.

Infinity universe - Nuff said. D.B. should be jumping all over that game engine. The tech demo is wicked... 2 years old mind........
