Elite Ranked Surface Settlement Attack Missions - MAMA MIA

I had a "kill six sentinel skimmer things at our enemies base" mission a week or so back. It was much easier in the SRV, but still quite hard.
The air defense turrets took out my Cobas shields in seconds and had me down to 30% hull before I bugged out, repaired and switched to SRV assault.

There was a keel back that appeared at one point and deployed hard points but didn't bother me too much. The main problem with it was the skimmers and turrets seemed to power down while it was above and I couldn't target them. Another issue was there weren't enough skimmers. I had to leave and come back for another spawn. That was a bit weird.

I haven't tried destroy the generator yet. Might give that a go.
 
Have you noticed if you can still target skimmers/stingers from your ship? I seem to have lost the ability to do that since 2.1 came out. SRV has no problems. Also noticed that skimmers can have enhanced weapons.
 
I destroyed my first generator last night and got about 800k for it. SRV was the only way.

Also got some cracked firmware when I was powering down the datapoints which made it worth the effort.
 
I wonder if there are any old nukes from Frontier: Elite II still kicking around. They used to do the job. From orbit :D
 
I've been doing mostly ground assaults since 2.1. Mostly with the crappy Asp, not really buffed for combat.

What I dun to succed is often wait for the ship to jump away. Sometimes they are parked. Some bases don't have trespass alarm - into those you can simply drive and do the datalinks, scout the target and do a sudden strike and head out. Not sure how the trespass thing really works - I need to attack more. I have entered bases without mission for this though - maybe that's why there was no trespass zone?

Most difficult are ships that have seeker missiles. They do destroy you pretty quickly. Kinda OP, considering YOU cannot really target ground targets - this should be looked into.

I've had a base assault with elite Viper attacking me poor buggy. But Viper had rails or cannon - I don't really remember. When I got into the base it stopped shooting - maybe it was afraid of hitting friendlies? A hidden no-fire zone restriction? Seeker missile equipped guys didn't stop firing when I was inside the base. Might as well just been tied to a single base layout.

What you can do is looking for a base that has a roof - this can protect you from aerial attack - you can use this to prepare a final push e.g. when the air patrol is turning from an attack or so.

Also rails and cannons against you are doable - they have bad accuracy / weapon convergence - whatever. I see lots of blasts around me but almost never get hit. Nice effects though with railguns. Like orbital bombardment a bit.

There's people running missiles claiming it's actually too easy when you now where to attack. Can't tell about that since I go in with the buggy for the datanodes.

The mission I posted about was a "kill skimmers" job.

Any skimmer of the targetted faction should do. Even those outside the base, I think. Some bases have outer utility areas, like e.g. a mining rig with light defenses.
