Hardware & Technical Enable Dual Monitors!

ahhh, I got bored of the crappy dual monitor support and went for one 46" screen instead... while I generally prefer one proper sized screen, the idea of having a second one for elite does sound very good :)

As the proud owner of 3 3D Samsung monitors running through 2 NVidia 460s I would very much want to play Elite this way. Burnout Paradise, Time Shift and HAWX 2 look very good indeed. Free floating space ships in 3D could be really, really special.

I do hope that the game is future proofed for 3D and very high resolutions. One day I wish to be playing Elite with my holographic surround display.

I totally would buy a second monitor if I were able to use it for maps, target Info etc. If I don't use my Beamer as primary Monitor at least :D

So, yes, I would really love that to be a possible feature.

Being able to have a stock market/chat/management program that's dialled into the elite universe running on a laptop/tablet next to the big gaming screen would a wonderful game enhancer.

If that's not possible I'd totally accept dual/multi monitor support.

or, as someone said earlier, both. :)

I was kinda think the other monitor would in space show energy levels for shields engines weapons etc, and let you micromanage them. Maybe for the radar as well.

Multi monitor would be excellent... but I'm really keen to try out Oculus Rift, and in the Reddit AMA, David B infered that support for it was a distinct possibility. Very cool indeed!

Imagine playing on double that - ie. two rows of 3.

:D

Ooh yes. :p

Driving games and flight sims are so sweet; you get the cockpit and side windows taking up the lower 3 panels, and the windscreen and ceiling or sky (for opentops) in the top 3.

I use two Matrox TH2Go units into one GTX470, using vertical span modes.

Even when just web browsing, i can have 3 browser windows open, each spanned vertically across two panels, minimising the need to scroll pages up and down.

If i had the space (and wedge) i think a 120Hz 5 by 3 grid would be the ultimate. Might have to wait for my lotto win tho...

I think I covered that with "management'. :)

That was the point I was making, if the game allows you to take advantage of a tablet/laptop/multi screen setup the extra panels should be configurable to show all sorts of stuff.

maybe have stock market app for my droid or simply use the laptop as a multi purpose screen which handles everything but flying the ship.

I'd love to see multi-monitor support. It would be handy to be able to see out of two windows at once and/or have a another with data on it.
Might need to acquire a third 24" panel so I can have the main view in the middle.
*strokes chin*
:D

That is a very nice setup but I don't quite have the desk for it I think. I wonder how long it will take for there to be an increase in reported 40+ year old gamers with neck injuries?

I've just been looking at the Nvidia website....
http://www.nvidia.co.uk/object/3d-vision-surround-technology-uk.html

ooooooooo <shudders> mmmmammama!

You're best off looking on this one. http://www.geforce.co.uk/optimise/guides/how-to-correctly-configure-geforce-gtx-680-surround#1

http://www.geforce.co.uk/Active/en_...0/GTX680-Surround-AccessoryDisplay-Skyrim.png

Since the GTX680 you can run 3 screens in surround and 1 accessory monitor (for web browsing/chat client etc) from a single card. You used to have run SLI to get that with NVidia cards.

Edit: BTW getting those mounts are like hen's teeth in the UK :(

What about some kind of link up to an iPad on your local network. It would be crazy cool to look at a star map on the iPad, trade in commodities, etc

I have absolutely no idea how much work is involved in a serious attempt at dual (multI? ) -monitor support), but my ideal setup would be:-

Fully, re-sizeable app window with undockable instruments and chat/info panels.

Once you have this as a base, you can configure for any setup; full screen, any size or ratio window, instruments where want to them and it doesn't matter how many monitors you have (or if they are different sizes.

You would probably need to have a hud and cockpit that scaled too.

Quite right: 'dedicated' multimonitor support is unnecessary in my experience - specialised features like bezel correction or aspect compensation could come later (tho i find the latter's usually inferior to standard full-screen modes anyway) - so long as the game gets the available screenmodes from the individual system and optimises the FOV and aspect ratio automatically (rather than a limited set of pre-defined modes), it'll display fine on any system. Then, as you say, a configurable HUD would let you best optimise your screen space as you like - with resizable drag'n'drop instrument clusters, and perhaps even fast switching between multiple presets (ie. to suit different camera views).

Much like MUI on the Amiga... something clean, simple & intuitive with no fuss. Multimonitor 'support' needn't be something extra - but simply universal display compatibility from the get-go. Display agnosticism, type stuff.

Unsure about this one.

I like to use my second monitor for web browsers and TS/vent/mumble/etc. I can see the benefit of what you are talking about but I think there might be another way around this.

How about using a system where you can detach windows from the game screen and have them separate from the main display like in Photoshop. You could then have the main display over as many monitors as you wish and then have the other information in one or several other displays on another monitor.

So you could have Dual monitors with the main display spread over the two with your Map display inventory and readouts on detachable windows that can be dragged to a third monitor.

Just a thought!

I've not played a game on multiple monitors, but if you're playing something like elite on just two monitors doesn't the centre of your view get split in half across the two screens?

that is, falling in the gap between the screens?

doesn't this get annoying?

Wouldn't Elite be better centred on one or three screens?
